I've spent most of the weekend trying to get animated models to work. It seems a pretty hit and miss affair and by the end of it I'm yet to get a bipped textured Max character to load and display correctly.

It must work as the motorbike example with DBPro shows animated .x models but there seems dissapointingly little advise on how to replicate a similarly fully functional model.

So I'm wondering if those in the know could inform us if there'll be any changes to using animated models with Patch 4.

Much obliged.

Hey Soyuz,

Patch 4 should be revamp of the 3D DLL. You can expect more compatiblity & faster 3D Graphics. If all goes well it looks like Beta Patch4 should be release on DBDN later this week. If true final should be out be month's end.

Thanks for reply. I don't suppose there'll be a DBPro specific Max .x exporter? I found my problem with animated .x models was either the .x exporter or DBPro was having issues with the UV map or the normals. It could display an animated vertex coloured model fine and also a model that was textured. Yet as soon as i selected to export the normals with the .x the thing would go crazy!

Ah well here's hoping and praying it really will work 100%.

soyuz,

Send your 3d model to Lee or Mike. They are currently testing model problems on the new system to see if they have fixed all the bugs.

You said yo also are having problems with the textures being displayed funny? If you could, send me your model and texture (or any that has the same problem) cuz I'm working on something to fix UV maps and materials in multi-material .X files. I got it working with TS4.3 exported .X files and would like to see if 3DS is doing the same junk.

Good news Soyuz, Rich with DBDN diary say DBPro Patch4 may get released tonight. Doesn't help you immediately, but means Patch4 finaly should be out very soon. Please do get your model off today if possible. I am wanting the 3D stuff to be very stable in this release so that I can start working on my games. The more they have to test, the better Patch4 will be.

ok this model i've been testing can be picked up here...

www.kev.bolt.btinternet.co.uk/zips/directxmodel.zip

I'll also forward this link to the DB lads.

The file contains the .max file as well as a .x model of the same thing. and textures obviously

This is a V low res poly model of a man i was testing to see if i could create a scene with a large number of animated characters while still making them look fairly real (or look humanoid at least!)

I believe there is a new model format, DBO (darkbasic object) which DB is 100% compatible with. The idea is you convert your model to the DBO format using their convertors.

Soyuz,

No there is no plugin for that, but you don't need one. You just need to make the file .x or .3ds and send it to DB Team. DBPro converts it to DBO format.

Make sure you explain what is happening.

err i am understanding this correctly? I make a model in 3ds or .x and then when I want to use it in a game I have to send it to someone to have it converted in order to use it in my 3D game? This all sounds a bit long-winded. I mean I could make and re-edit a model 20 times in a night. If I then have to make the model and wait a day to get it back as a DBO then I'm going to get a game completed some time next decade! Am I misunderstanding?

Sending the .x file now thanks.
