Only on dial-up here so I'm not going to get them, but I would imagine they are to do with the asian quake and to show everyone just how catastophic it was.

Yeah, Fallout is correct, here's a quick description of each:

http://ish.cc/dan/ts/tsunamiphuket.wmv: This one is mainly of how quickly you can see the flood rose in Phuket, it went from a dry restaurant to waist-height in about 2 minutes.

http://media.militaryphotos.net/soonahmee/big_wave.wmv: A fairly large wave hits a beach, and runs about 50m inland. Quite amusing when you hear all the foreign language screaming and then this one, large, "Holy Shit!" at the end.

http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/aibob/tsunami.wmv: This one is a series of waves that form the tsunami, and you see how one guy braved it right at the shoreline for quite a while before he realised it was actually very serious.

http://hosted.hytekhosting.us/tsunamis/patong_beach.wmv: This is an amazing side-on video from the roof of a building that shows how quickly and how far the tsunami flooded Patong.

http://hosted.hytekhosting.us/tsunamis/sri_lanka_tsunami.wmv: That's a really good video of the Sri Lankan tsunami coming head on (from on a hotel building), you also get the pommy English accent of the camera operator narrating her fear as the tsunami starts flooding the city.

They're not the best quality and some have pretty shotty camera-work (mainly the fisrt couple) but it's quite interesting to see how much damage the natural disaster caused.

hehe nah i suck at teh codez, i can make a few basic engines to showcase some models, but i cant make a full blown game, never really sat down and tried, too busy sifting through ideas and working off already made code, tweaking it to learn what bits do etc. i can make a first person engine from scratch

As for the videos... I expected the tsunami to spike up much higher than it did... i thought it'd be "scary as hell" just to see it... but it just looks like a bunch of water that decided not to stop while it was on the shoreline x_x

Here's my opinion:

Those of us that do, are really lucky to be living in the West. Once "the big one" hits the fault-line on the Pacific, we'll see who's crying then. For somebody to say that it's just a big wave, and no big deal, should take a look at themselves. More than 50,000 SO FAR have been killed by this tsunami, and it's ignorant people like the leaders of my country that only sent $5m in aid. Let's see how much help we receive if this were to happen to us.

I saw this one video on CNN, of these two tourists on the beach, at first the wave was pretty weak, so they just sort of held onto this object and tried to brave it out, but then all of a sudden this huge wall of water hit, and they got swept away, don't know if they lived or not.

Totally off topic, but seeing as we currently dont have the technology to destroy incoming asteroids, I wonder if the government would tell us about a 'global killer'. Just got me thinking. We could all be about to pop it to giant tidal waves and we probably would never know about it.

Well, if you want to get technical, he says "Holy Cerap!", and normally I wouldn't find it amusing but you'll notice that the wave in that video didn't cause much damage at all.

Well, thousands of Swedes are missing. One of them is my second cousin. She was going from Phuket Island to Australia that day. I haven't heard if she's gotten out. So, excuse me for not finding this amusing. Thousands of Swedes are missing, and probably dead.

Tens of thousands of Thais, Sri Lankese, Indians, Indonesians are dead.

Over 100 thousand people have been killed, I really cant believe the light heartedness of this topic. Its all very well to say "Why shud I give a damn" but im sure your attitudes would be different if you or any of your close family were there when the tsunami hit.

And if you think about it, these videos, are actually from people who made it out alive. Im sure the scarier videos got destroyed when the people who were making them died.

Terrible thing thats happened over there. Wheres this world headed, jeeze
Anyway I saw this movie called Tsunami (its an actual hollywood flick from like 1997 or so) The movie showed how some scientist had managed to create artificial tsunamis by detonating nuclear bombs beneath the ocean. Now if im correct, americas got nukes....could these waves possibly have been...........nah.. retaliation or a warning to terrorist because of 9/11..nah.......

Then again, you never know, were only just learning new stuff about september 11 that was thought to be 'nah, cant happen, didnt happen' type of thing. *COUGH Bush knew about it all COUGH*

Heck even Clinton had his day:
"I did not have sex with that woman"
"I did have sex with that woman"
Makes you wonder what kind of deathtrap all of us here in america are somewhat stuck in, eh?

How about that FPSC release comin up!! yeah!....

Hollywood is to blame for a lot of things. Like the ruining of DooM, and many other things.

Anyway, back on topic.

Yes its a shame that the there was a huge earthquake that lead to a tsunami. But alot of the loss of life was caused by them standing around pretyt much on the beaches, saying this to eachother:

"That looks like a bigass wave up there Bob! Think we should move?"

"Nah, i think we should stand here longer, looking at this tall wave about to crash down on us and then we'll drown."

"OK, lets......"

Thats when the wave chrashes and you never hear poor bob again. From all the videos i looked at, there we're plenty of people just standing around doing that. So i blame an Earthquake, and stupidity for the massive loss of life that took place.

Oh, and lets not forget that all the diseases from these dead unburied bodys, is gonna throw a lot more into the "Dead Total". So i'll say the final number will be around 150,000 dead, and plenty injured.

Riiiight, because of course you could have run the several miles needed to outpace the wave in most regions, in the few short minutes they had to do this.

Right?

So the thousands of bloated rotting corpses washed up onto the beaches each day, of the young children, babies, adults etc - are all just the ones who couldn't run away in time?

Jesus Christ, what is this forum coming to. The stupidity level is reaching new all-time highs.

OH come on... Your saying all thsoe people in Sri Lanka....... NONE of them we're smart enough to figure "Hmmm large earthquake... maybe big waves coming". Most of them lived there long enough to know when the earthquakes strike, waves follow. I guess we leave all senses of logic out when we talk about 3rd world countries?

Sorry, I forgot it was standard issue to carrying a seismic activity sensor that could detect undersea earthquakes miles and miles away. The shrimp fisherman surely forgot to tune into their personal imaging satellites too

Ok Sri Lanka isn't the best example... actually that was probably the worst possible example I could of chosen (other then a small island in the 100 mile vicinty of the epicenter.) I miserably f*cked that arguement, and will just walk away.

Your reply just saved this thread from being locked. There is an echo of truth in what you said - that, if informed of the impending wave (which most weren't), some could have perhaps fled the area - and I'm sure some probably did. But as we've seen from all the reports on TV, those worst hit probably didn't even own a radio, let alone a TV, and the warning systems just weren't in place anyway even if they all did.

I think the amateur camcorder footage isn't helping fuel some of the dumber comments in this thread (am not directly referring to you Eric) - because from that footage you just cannot appreciate the real power of the wave. The footage is so poor / filmed from locations that survived (so hence didn't get the full brunt of the waves anyway!) that it makes some people think "I could have surfed such a tiny wave". I doubt we'll ever see what it must have looked like from the perspective of a child playing on the beach, or similar. It was a beautiful sunny day for most, it must have looked quite awe inspiring until the reality of it sunk in. But because it didn't look like the physical impossibility that Deep Impact etc promotes, it causes apathy.

A warning to everyone commenting on this tradegy - I have a virtually zero tolerance level for smart-arsed / idiotic / moronic comments. Bear that in mind before posting, because I will ban accounts if I feel you've gone too far. It reflects piss poorly on this community and makes me ashamed to be part of it.

Posting the videos anywhere for any purpose is a bit insensitive, but leaving them without a reason manages to convey the impression you put them there for no other reason than sheer enjoyment.

@Rich

Most of these people dont understand enough about what has happened to react in any other way. Same as the WTC and Beslam in September, they dont understand enough about them, but still decide to post.

rich - chill. everyone is entitled to a view, even if it is stupid or wrong.

i've been watching the news daily on this tv and online. it's a tear jerker if you see some of the footage they show you.

the effect there is gonna be worldwide since other countries might rely on the produce/clothing/etc they make.

some of the countries rely on tourism as a major income source, yet some of them are letting people carry on with their holidays. there's no harm in that since if people are scared away, the country will just spiral into debt.

so some countries may seem heartless, they have to be otherwise debts will take over them.

the only 1 thing people should be complaining at, is the countries that voted not to put a system in place to warn people of diasters like this. which has cost them dearly.

different people have different ways of seeing things. many reach out and donate, some might have a giggle, some might just lash out as the governments.

well thats my 2 cents.
