Download your demo now from http://www.geocities.com/darksmegger/, quick! before the bandwidth runs out!

Just a little fps i started making with newton. Its got everything you'd expect...guns, doors, more guns, pretty good enemy AI (the things which look like trash-cans are the enemy btw) and they'll follow you around corners, shoot you down, and u can shoot em back etc. And finally, lots of random objects to blow all over the place . The best part is, its less than 600 lines of code.

Special thanks to walaber and offcourse the people who created newton.

Looks good so far.

Just one question for now. Why is it called The Smeg?

Perhaps if you called it something that wasn't short for smegma you wouldn't get so many questions about the name.

I just asked because the word "Smeg" is used in the TV Series Red Dwarf, used in the place of real swear word. Sort of like when characters say "Frak" in Battlestar Galactica.

So I wasn't sure if this was thought up on your own or you were watching Red Dwarf between working on the game at some point.

No offence.

Yup, i first heard the word on Red Dwarf. And my fps is going to in space, so i think Smeg is a rather appropriate name .

Just another picture

I UV mapped the guns and completed the first level. Now all I have to do is create textures for everything.

Haha, yea i haven't programmed what happens when you die yet, it makes testing the game much easier. And I'll try and upload a demo tonight. Can someone recomend somewhere to upload it (probly about 4 mb), its a long time since I had a website.

Thanks

[edit]hmmm, it appears they don't allow hotlinking. Wait, i'll try and find another site.[/edit]

Thats the demo. The controls are WASD, space to jump, click to shoot and click the middle mouse button to change weapons. I left the level.ini file out so ppl could play with it, just open it in notepad. Please tell me what fps u get.

ok, i just recently had a test go for this (teacher left classroom )
and I would like to say: really nice. the fps might be low on my computer (schools computer) -> 18fps. but it is quite fun actually.

I like the idea of the AI and how they die.
but when I shoot them they get pulled back too much.
i mean, they are living beeings, they do have balance and they look like they weight alot but when I shoot them they are easily pushed backwards, maybe if they weight abit more.

anyways great work. my game is alot like this except mine will have zombies and ragdolls (hopefully)

Its good to know it works on a school computer I'll probably need to play around with the mass (and friction and all the other constants) of all the objects to make it a ikle bit more realistic.

And im looking forward to seeing ur game, ragdolls would be really cool aswell, but i hate animating models.

i just tested it with my own computer.
it was really nice.. 50fps.

i didnt notice that thing with the AI now like i did at school.
perhaps because everything was in slowmotion there it seemed like the object moved more than they should.

now they moved as i expected

good demo

I don't mean to be a pain but I can't run your demo.

It quits back to the desktop and leaves a error report in the folder with the exe.

Report reads:
[COMMON]
PathToEXE=C:\MiscGames\smeg\CrashOn_02_08_05.txt
[CEXE]
m_dwRuntimeErrorDWORD=0
m_dwRuntimeErrorLineDWORD=290

Hopefully you can sort it out as I'd very much like to play your game, well check out the competition .

ChrisyB, thanks for the feedback.

I sometimes got the same error file, it appears to be completely random though. Or at least thats a good way of explaining my dodgey programming Did you try running the game more than once, that usually fixes the problem for me?

Incidentaly, does anyone know if newton creates this file or dbpro?

I had tried it several times but it would seem that your mear mentioning of it was the cure, heh heh. Just tried it again and it worked first time.

It's good, some of the things could do with a bit of mass tweeking (my problem aswell), and maybe a bit more colour. But I'm sure all thats to come later.

Well thats insparation enough for me, back to my own game.

Glad it works.

Unfortunately this is a problem i will eventually have to fix, though im convinced its a problem with newton , its definately not my programming .

i also get this error message with my game, im also using newton.

id say it must be newton that makes it, since we could possibly not write the exact same code

Well its good to know its newton and not me. I think it might be a problem with the createconvexhull command. I'll ask walabler or someone else on his forum.

[edit]
I just saw ChrisyB's post about his FPS game, its looking good. There certaintly lots of competion.

I looked in my MOOD project folder and found an error message also, so I think it's safe to say it's probably Newton, or we're all doing somthing wrong.

I guess I'll be seeing you over at Walaber's place.

Thanks for the comment, although you are currently beating me tenfold on speed.

Thanks for comments

Mr Pointless, do you think you could elaborate on the problem with the mouse (don't tell me u like inverted mouse controls ).

Walaber, Im really lazy so I just did everything as convex hulls (even for boxes). But, I think this might be the problem that causes it to crash sometimes, because the convex hulls dont always wrap the objects correctly. I read your post on your forum and i think ill try and use less convex hulls and more primitives.

Lukas W and ChrisyB, are you also using convex hulls?

Thanks again

im using convex hulls at the moment.
but i will change that soon to get more exact collision detection.

not trying to steal your thread but if you look at my game, (i made a movie) you can see that when i shoot the floor smothing is happening because the bullets does not hit the floor but they hit an object that really is not there.. i guess that has to do with convex hull collision. (movie is on my webpage)

Nah, most likely your newton world size is too small, try this at the beginning of your code:

ndb_setvector 1,-10000,-10000,-10000
ndb_setvector 2,10000,10000,10000
ndb_newtonsetworldsize

Its looking good, especially the zombie model.

hi, im back at school... after walking 6000km atleast because our teacher left us at a place we did know where it was, we got lost.. hmm, this suck. its snowing and the wind is strong. try to beat that. first alot of old people asking millions of questions, then walk a looong way back to school because of our teacher, just to notice she is at school and apoligise for that little problem, but she was in a hurry yeah right. i dont think she likes us..

anyway, i am not using the latest version of newton... or am I??
hmm, i dont know. i will have a look at what version im using when i get home again. aww, my head.

Well i just added a nice code for smooth changing of weapons and I added doors to the demo (very nice if i may say so, they can move up or across) . It also has its own scripting files, so if anyone wanted to make a mod...lol, but seriously, perhaps i will make in into an fps maker.

Yes, the download file is corrupt. And when I went back to version one, the bandwidth limit was exceeded! I think it should be a rule that you're not allowed to host websites or games on Geocites.
