Wow, the games seem to be very very big in size (according to dev journals). I want to know if there has been anything done to make the games come out smaller. And if so, how much MB would an average 10 level game come out to be? I can't have a bandwidth eating monster living on my server.

Rar it. There will be no attempt to shrink the size of the final games simply because they'll always be as large as the amount of media you use + the EXE.

Raring makes a 153 mb file go all the way down to 151 mb. This stinks.

It's either that or not using the software at all.
Learn to live with it.
I know i will.

We are all going to have to adapt our game ideas
to fit with FPSC if we want to use it.

Have any of you other testers tried to rar your games and, if so, are you getting about the same results? "Media" tends not to zip up very well.

With a program like this it's just too easy to put in loads of different models without thinking about the consequences. If you want a smaller file size then try to stick to just a few different models, and maybe ones you can combine to make larger ones.

Also, it'd be great if FPSC takes the Ogg Vorbis format for sounds, which would reduce the file size considerably. Does it accept this?

I used the test game for this test:

Pre RAR compression : 151mb
Post RAR compression : 82.7mb

Almost a 70mb difference.

Compression works better with multiple files... you really can't compress 1 file.

Plus it also depends on the type of media that you are compressing.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but .mp3 files apparently don't compress very well considering they're actually already compressed!
Keep this in mind when working with other file formats. Also, I try to use .jpg as often as possible and use Macromedia Fireworks to Export them for the web - greatly reduces the file size on images without any visible quality loss (although there's obviously some) and I know that when it comes to textures you can't afford quality loss but everyone's gotta cut some corners!

150MB at least, although Lee changed the texture compression since I last checked.

mmh i think it depends on the media each game will have within.
so its possible to make games which have more than 1Gigabyte like the famous

no it doesnt. a good game needs much more than high graphics. leveldesign , story , etc.
but i think you cannot publish a game today which is made with the duke3d build editor even if you have a kick @$$ story

It is a mod for the DOOM2 game, or a port
for the doom2 game.
When editing the EDGE port of doom2 you
can actually edit almost all aspects of the
game without any coding. I made a sweet horror
mod with it.

@Nolder, the scariest game I've played was System Shock 2. Mainly due to things happening unexpectedly.

@jasuk70, Totally agree. Playing that game with the lights out was darn spooky. It's definately one of my favorite games of all time and my muse for what I want to do with FPSC.
