I'm working with 3d Studio Max 4.26 and have created an animation using bones and skined mesh (P.S I downloaded the mesh off the net, as It's only for a screensaver I'm working on for a friend)

The Problem I'm having Is I can't export the animation out of Max?

I have tried using the .x exporter in max (from the DirectX SDK) this exports a static mesh without the texture?

I have tried .3ds, No animation at all and exports the bones as objects?

I have tried MD3's but no animation data or textures are exported?

I have tried using MilkShape, but It has no .x import and I can't find a good import for Milkshape that has a good export for Max?

Is there someone out there who can Please Please post a walkthrew of exporting from MAX with dowloadable export filters or a converter (remember .3ds don't contain mesh or skin deform information) to any form that DBPro can read, preferably .X

Hey,

Go to www.quest3d.com and go to the support section. They have an .x exporter you can download and it works!! They've remodified the one from the DirectX SDK. Also, try looking at your model with the DXSDK meshviewer.exe. If the animation works with that, then it should work in DarkBasic.

I made an character animation in milkshape and exported out as an x file, it works perfectly with the directx sdk mesh viewer but the model is corrupted in DBPro

The max exporter, XSkinExp.dle, doesn't seem to export skinned meshes, oddly enough, but exports physiqued meshes. However, the binary version downloaded from Microsoft's site crashes max when you try to do this with any animation in your model. The source code needs to be modified and the plugin rebuilt. You need the max sdk and character studio sdks for this. For max 5 users this may be a impossible because max 5 doesn't seem to come with a CS sdk. However, the plugin for R4 will work.

One thing I found out after hours of trial and error is that you have to collapse all texture modifiers (especially if you're using Unwrap UVW) before exporting, or the plugin won't generate the correct UV coordinates. AND max 5 has a nifty render to texture feature, but the plugin won't export it unless you convert it to an Unwrap UVW modifier. This isn't a one step process and involves saving the UVW mapping in the Automatic Flatten UV modifier, deleting that modifier, and then reloading the UV mapping into a new Unwrap UVW modifier, which you then must collapse into the mesh before you export the .X file.

Instructions on the source modifications to the plugin can be found here:

i'd seriously recommend against source alteration and just export using Pop'n'Fresh s' MD3 Exporter...
