www.darkbasicplanet.com is back up after a lengthy downtime, but were on faster servers now

and for compensation for some of your traumatic experiences i have included 3 interviews with DBS, Mike, Lee and Rich

Mike and Lee's tackle Patch 4 and BEYOND **add earie music.....now**

and Rich's tackles his new job obviously and what we can expect to see over the coming months in the DB/Pro community

hope you like them

oh and If any of you want a certain topic tackled in my next interviews, which include Guy Savoie(The next IDE) and Rick Vanner(2003 Surprises), please email me about them at [email protected]

thanks in advance

interesting

a big question i actually still have which Rich can pass along is ... will DBO format be having any Exporter|Importers for popular 3D Packages,
e.g. 3dsmax, Maya, Lightwave and Milkshape?

however as gameMatrix (the dbpro rewrite of gameSpace) is back in its home, looks like it won't be a problem to support it atleast in a native modeler.

AS they are hinting at more native modelers appearing thou, does this mean that our prays for MFC style functions are gonna be answered?
it would certainly make developing applications ALOT simpler if we didn't have to worry about UI functions like Menus, RightClick Menus, Popups, Tool windows etc...

right now the libraries i'm developing are doing this internally to keep with style.
and a possibility of a DLL plugin for this - but still built in functions to expand upon would greatly help ... possibly allow us to choose between a Game Project which is DirectX standard environment and Application Project which uses Encapsulated DirectX Windows

Also will the format of DBO be freely available and in similar form to say their Memblock Mesh data layouts?

hehee... i know they answer alot of questions just to have more come up but these things are quite important to me and the developments going on using DBpro

Hmmm An interesting read... the DBO and especially DBW sound promising, altho I'm currently working on my own model and level format (and complete SDK! More details soon-ish )

Well if Patch 5 is out around March, surely that means Patch 4 is soon? Yum. Glad to hear mention of 100% compatibility with Patch 3, I was very worried about this

WooHoo!!

Nice interviews Insider, the main question I am left with is will the .DBO object format allow for collision to Limbs of an object independantly of the main object, for instance if an object was a road and the road had limbs that were tree's on the road side would I beable to add pollygonal collision to the limbs and detect a collision between a player object and the tree limb of the road object independantly from the road Object?

A statment would look something like:
if Object Collision(Object Number,(Object Number,Limb number))=1" then ....

This is one thing I would dearly like to see, if for any reason it is possible now( I am pretty sure it isn't) then I appologise for being an amateur , otherwise can you assertain if it is going to be possible?

many thanks, I look forward to seeing the further interviews you have in store for us too, your doing a good job there

MFC? hmmm.. I'm saying nothing

DBO exporters - definitely, but to start with we'll see convertors (3DS/MD2/etc) instead.

Object limb collision? Yes for sure. Object cloning? Yes for sure!

Cheers,

Rich

i dunno the pages take a while to load even for the simple text .. probably cause its not pure html for some sections would be my guess.

and the java buttons at the side lighten and darken slow
but then recently my computer has been slugging not sure why

ok i did some quick hassling and i have cleected them in the form of Mike Johnson

I emailed him about the questions and here is what he sent back to me

btw i have full permission to post this

-----
When we release the specifications of the file format it's possible that anyone could create exporters and importers. Hopefully people interested in DB Pro would be willing to help out on that front and it's also possible that at some point in the future we'll write support for some of these packages as well.

Supporting MFC would be really useful as it would allow everyone to write windows style apps. We have discussed it in the past and maybe something will come of it. I don't know at this stage what's going to happen. If enough people ask for it and show an interest then maybe support will be added into DB Pro.

You will be able to access DBO through memblocks and possibly custom functions.

Regards,

Mike

Rich:

Many thanks if I wasn't married I would fall in love all over again after hearing such sexy talk..

In honesty I am very happy indeed and thank you and DBS for making my day.. no week.. NO, no.. I meant year

I look forward to sunday, if the patch is not here on sunday I will post hate mail to the starter of the date posting.. unless they meant 1 sunday of a month in a year? then I'll just be unhappy

which time and zone on sunday was that again?

I would say that the interviews were conducting a while ago, so I'm not too sure if it's accurate or not. I'd hope it is - it would tie in with the DBDN january chat session, but there's been no official release of this date.

Cheers,

Rich

Hmm Well the latest newsletter from DB Software says patch 4 will be released in the first quarter of 2003!! Sounds like they're being overly cautious with specifying a release date - or in other words it'll be released as soon as they have removed all known bugs!

Hey, we've learnt from experience - don't give specific dates until they are concrete and cannot help but be hit.

The newsletter says Q1 2003 to give us a bit of scope, but P4Beta2 should be next week or so.

Cheers,

Rich

Does p4Beta2 mean it'll still only be for DBDN members?

I'm sorry I don't mean to offend but I still think this is the biggest ripoff going - pay for a product and then pay again to help test the patches which fix things that one was under the impression would be in the commercial product anyway! My principals (and cash shortage) prevent me from joining DBDN even though the amount of 3D animated models I have ready to use the patch would be an ideal test bed for it!!

I would be very interested in being a member of DBDM - if it was free, or cheap. The subscription price is way too high. I would have thought that you should earn your place in it by knowledge, skill or example, not just paying your way in. Plus have you seen the proce? I'm sorry but for early semi working beta versions of patches and use of a foruum thats pretty steep Again no offense intended - and don't get me wrong I am very interested in the inner workings of DarkBasicPro, helping it develop, very respectful of the skilled programming required to make such software, and would not have complained if the software cost twice the price or more! But personally the DBDN thing kinda sounds like a bad way round it
