Why ?...Winrar is free but hosting space is expensive...just download it !
Look heres the link:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
And if you dont like the edia of it eventualy asking you to buy it, use 7zip
http://www.7-zip.org/
Its totaly free and it opens loads of file types including '.rar'

Sorry if i seem harsh but when its free i seems silly to have to post a larger file.

Tom: Sorry for replying for you !...if you do want to post a zip i'll remove this post.

Thanks for helping post, Baggers I can make a ZIP package, too! Next update will be with link to RAR and ZIP file.

Quote: "you might consider only coloring those "bands" red"

Yes, I'm still working on this... I created banners to put them - with different flags - on the buildings. This is a new screenshot from the action:

New update is now available! Some new features:

- Enemy builds up an army as long as you don't destroy the production buildings. (LIMITED army for enemy)
- Enemy units fight back, if you attack it. They don't move but can attack your units.
- Money is still not limited, so you can bring them down!

ZIP file: http://www.vbmyadmin.com/taylor/MECHWAR/mechwars.zip (12 MB)

RAR file: http://www.vbmyadmin.com/taylor/MECHWAR/mechwars.rar (8 MB)

media package: http://www.vbmyadmin.com/taylor/MECHWAR/media.rar (5 MB)

In the "Options" menu it's possible to change some settings now:

Terrain: High / Low
Explosion and Smoke: High / Low
Sync 60 fps: On / Off
Default settings: High, High, On

You need the new media package for quick loading. I don't update the ZIP file (too big), please use WinRAR - it's free for 40 days.
Download WinRAR from here: http://www.winrar-rog.com/edownload/winrar.html

Good job, I downloaded it, AWESOME! I have a story, if you want it, I'll pm it.

Also, a few suggestions,
1.once you have the gameplay down, start making campaigns (however you spell that)
2.something where you can set an image as your team logo, and it's printed on each of your units and buildings
3.I can't think of anything

News about MechWars!

* Option screen has new settings:

I tried many configurations and I must say that LOW TERRAIN gives the most speed boost. Depends on your machine.

* Without enough money you cannot build units anymore. But you can still take a "credit" for every building - maybe for a new refinery to get faster money.
* Units (player and cpu) have now auto. defense - if they stand still! If you enter the enemy range, be sure you get attacked.
* Enemy moves forward and attacks your units! I'm glad this and the auto. defense worked out without any lag at gameplay.
* Rebuild the MadCat to safe about 1000 vertex. Game runs better for many MadCats units now.
* Some 3d-sound effects added (rocket launch, explosion, ...)

For quick loading with every terrain setup, download the media package. RAR files are uptodate! Enjoy the demo

Quote: "I have a story"

Sure I want to know it! And I think this will go together with the design of campaigns...

Enemy attacks!

Actually they don't behave very cleverly - but they attack! To help protecting your units/buildings I will add defense towers. So the logic for warfare will be ready...

I have another suggestion, when you hover your mouse over and object (a unit or an item in the build pane) it says what it is.

Yeah, I like to have some stuff like this, too. Not sure when I can do it. Actually I try adding more units and defence towers. Intro and general user interface must come - but later.

@Evil stick: Thanks for your email, I want to use more sounds, but didn't found good ones. If you have some let me know how to get them

Overlord is the next new unit. Big tank with strong bombs. Cannot attack aircraft, but I will add cannon upgrade for air defense.
Overlord Picture:

Quote: "And are those explosions sprites?"

Yes

And i try to smooth the edges, but rescaling the UV of my objects doesn't work out so well... It's a object from a single limb of the terrain, so it has all texture coordinates (UVs) like the terrain. Didn't found a way to change this.

Sorry to hang on the explosions again, but I'm really curious on how exactly you managed to make them look so good... I'm working on a third person game and have no idea how to start them And nice work with the new tank, keep it up

Okay, I'm sure you make them exactly like the smoke code shows us in this thread. So it depends only on the bitmap you use. I have 3 steps for the explosion sprites.

Download the explosion sprites and take a look at them. I take #24,#30 and #36 for the explosion steps. I can make explosion sprites for your needs, if you are not able to do them yourself
But you must edit the edges of each sprite! Fill the transparent parts with your colorkey (Set it with set image colorkey). For me, i take real black (0/0/0) as colorkey. But to show the clean edges I made a pink example:

Hope I could help!

Overlord ready for action! Download new demo to check out.

The screen shows the long-range attack from Overlords. Heavy bombs can attack any ground unit and building. The enemy shoots not directly on buildings. But you can use buildings (specially walls) as shield for your units! Helicopters can shoot over the walls easy, because they fly. Overlords will hit the wall if he attacks a unit just behind this. But walls will be destroyed very quick by Overlords...

Some other new stuff:
* New map to explore (download new media package)
* Madcat and Overlord animated when shooting
* Press SPACE for printing current FPS

New main feature: You can levelup your MadCat now. After every kill (ground unit) you can pickup a metalbox. MadCats have for now 3 levels for Heavy Laser. With each level your MadCat shoots 10% faster.

Actually I started to add network gaming. Someone wants to join beta-testing? (I have only one machine to test on.)

please, dont add infantry as they really would be usless against the mech chasis you have out there - i think an interesting avenue to explore instead of normal infantry would be squads of elementals

Yes, sounds good to me. I don't add infantry, because I don't like to get "humans" involved into mechwars
I allready created a mech like AT-ST, which will function like a infantry - fast, cheap but weak.

I'll sure beta test and I know someone who might also want to. Put in chat if it doesn't have it. Also, what's your MSNM address? The apollo MSN doesn't work. And if you don't want to put in infantry, how about mechs that blow up, rdop bombs, have lasers, and other stuff.

Worked pretty well...

I also agree with some other people above that sometimes the collision and moving around buildings gets glitchy.. The big tank you can build and the helicopters seem to get stuck (well, take forever to get around buildings)...

Otherwise, this is looking like an awesome game, keep up the good work.. Always did like C&C/Starcraft etc type games.

First off all I want to thank you for your interest! And thanks for your nice comments.

@Evil stick: Beta-testing for network gaming will be very cool! Of course I will add an in-game chat. By that we can adjust general gameplay and find other ideas. If the first test-able version is done, I give you a link by email. I don't like to release it until it works well

Quote: "collision and moving around buildings"

Yes, I agree with you. The movement is not exactly for now to solve some incorrect unit movements. I'm sure I'll improve that.

Personally, i think that you should add infantry..

have some rocket packers and ground to air missile ppl.. maybe spies.. it would make the game more frantic to have small characters running cicles around the slower moving things.. eg mechs and big old tanks. Also it'd make the game more realistic i think... but at the end of the day its ur choice and ur game is still very gd.

im outtie.. peace

Yeah, but I will add no human infantry. I work on a human-like mech and an AT-ST mech. These units will be very fast and will have ground to air missiles - as an infantry should I hope this fits and will be in balance with the bigger units. For sure this is a nice improvement!

@Evil stick: I will add only 1on1 multiplayer, but it's good to have more testers. So your friend is welcome

Before the multiplayer mode is ready, I will finish the hole gameplay. I prepared everything for easy implementation later. For now I add resources and more units. This will take some time, because I got a new job since last days! I'm glad about that, but now I have to do the most stuff at weekend time. So next demo update will contain gameplay and grafix improvments. Network playing can only be done after (nearly) complete gameplay.

@Evil stick: I give you a link as soon as it's possible!

Hi Mark,

i don't really now if I need this permission. But I don't care anyway! Every model and texture I use is SELFMADE or was for FREE. I have many free models from the MadCat and I took one to rebuild it. And if there will be any rights problem with a model or something, I simply replace it Anyway I can tell you, that I plan to order my own models from other professionals. There will be no needed permission at all.

But thank you for the advise. Maybe someone can bring light into this theme...

The infantry will is very fast and not too weak. Here's a picture of the unit:

This will be the resource metal:

Resources will be needed to get upgrades for the weapons. Only with this metal units will be able to upgrade the weapon! To get the metal you have to break it down down and carry small pieces away. Two different kind of units have to do the job.

Demo will be available soon!

Rule of thumb is 20% different from the original source you got it from, then your legal. I will see if I can find the copyright link for you about models/art and percent difference.

Okay, thank you for the information! Every model I use is a complete rebuild of an high polygon model. But I don't know, if the copyright is about the model or about the shape of the model. If it's about the shape, even a rebuild isn't legal. But I guess it's about THE original model and not about any model just looking like the original

Quote: "Clan vs. IS"

Sorry... What you mean by that? But my plan is to add the "final" units and complete the hole gameplay. The engine is ready so far, now the detailed work has begun! Later I add network gaming for fun over the internet.

as long as you use your own models and textures and dont trye to make your own models and textures look like plain copys of the original is there no problem.
think of all world war 2 games out there how many ways can you make an sherman tank?

Hello dudes!

This game is currently rewritten in DBSDK (Visual Studio .NET 2003 C++). That's why you cannot see progress here. I will post updates, if playable demo is available!

Thank you and have fun.
