While I agree with you a good majority of the time, I really think that would defeat the purpose of moderators. If Rich feels any of us are stepping out of line, he can demote us. It's not like we're born into this power by monarchy.

There already is a moderator hierarchy of sorts--- Rich, Rick, Lee, etc. are Admins, and then we have the Moderators. To have different level-ranking moderators is just a waste of time.

If people have been hanging about here as long as someone like you, then they'll know, by experience, which mods they feel they can rely on more than others.

The folder turns red when a thread gets enough replies. Mods add the Flamebait and Offensive (!!...!!) tags.

There is a huge brain that controls the forums and detects flamewars.

Yeah but that would contradict the whole 'brain' thing

ive never noob slapped or banned anyone, however i seem to be the one who has a decent moral compass and has to be the burden of the whinge. Im not worried, I know im fair and i have friends here who i can bounce stuff off if im out of line.
I have the power but i rarely use it, I dont need to, others are keen to use the powers so they can have the glory or power etc. being in these positions for a long time gives you a medium not to lose it and abuse the power.

I agree with the newer batch of mods being slightly aggressive, but its probably just youth and ive never seen anything way out of order.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Y'know guys...the only qualm I've had with a lock was the "spongebob is gay" thread, but then I didn't see the posts that were buhleeted so it probably needed a padlock, although it would have been an interesting conversation.

I'm usually last to get to these threads, I check here usually after lunch and in the evening. I think some of you guys are taking this community concept a little too seriously, to the point where the community is becoming the equivalent of a family in the sense that you begin bickering with each other. Then you realize you're not family, and it pisses you off that some guy off in somewhere is being particularly nice to you for whatever reason. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe people really don't give a darn about the whole thing and just post whatever trifle emotion pops into their head to see what sort of interesting things go on, at that point it's a level of maturity issue, and it's still a problem.

Just out of curiosity... Which catergorie do I fall into?

I mean, I'm half way inbetween the old mods, and the new ones ( leaning more toward the newer ones in comparisson to vets like Ian and Rob )...

And ( be completely honest, now ), how do you see me using my powers?
Am I too aggressive?
Should I back off, or step it up, or stay about the same?

Be brutally honest.
It is Your community afterall, and I'm only here to help protect younger users, and keep things in a bit of order...

That's not how you really see me, is it?

I don't wanna come across as a know-it-all, or someone who likes to use authority...

I aim to be respected, not in power... But, I don't mean "respected" as in "I'll smite you down if you don't respect me!"... I mean, more like people feel that they can approach me, knowing I'll be friendly, and help 'em out with their code...

If I'm completely wrong in judging what you just said, I blame it on having a bad day all-round

At the end of the day - we have far better things to do with our time than defend ourselves here. We try to help the community by keeping the forum nice, and if that means locking posts and banning people then get used to it, but at the end of the day it's done because we feel that it's necessary, not because of some strange ego malfunction that it's assumed all the new mods have.
I've been avoiding posting here, because I don't really need someone I'll never meet telling me about abusing powers that they just don't understand. I mean, what is it - do you think we're sitting grinning when we have to newbie slap a user?, no we're annoyed because we should'nt have to babysit anyone here, same with people posting inapropriately, anyone who's ever been offended here would happily take action if they could, and more often than not you make half a dozen people happy for every newbie that you slap, fair trade IMO.

The only time I really feel like a mod is in general discussion - everywhere else I'm posting like any other user here, I probably spend more time in DBPro discussion than anywhere, and it's not because I find the need to moderate there. I often see peoples posts being vandalised with nonsense, and hell yeah if a newbie vandalises any of your posts then they better duck because that annoys the heck outta me.

Everyone here should know that the moderators are a team, if we're concearned about someone we bring it up - the mod lounge is our coffee room where we get to gossip about you all, and warn each other to keep an eye on certain people when necessary. If one of us goes out of line, more often than not another mod will bring it up, and if we're in 2 minds about how to best deal with something, we make a post and get input from the other mods or Rich if need be.

I just don't think there's a lot of appreciation for what happens behind the scenes, and I don't think people realise the amount of thought we do put into taking action. Newbie Slapping seems be considered really bad - WTF! - it means that if you posts crud it won't be approved, that's ALL!. We all know how volatile some people can be, newbie slapping is the best defence against escalating the situation and ending up just banning someone.

Well said Van.

As an additional, I'm in total agreeance with Van about how we feel newb slapping, and banning people...

If someone litters a thread, or they just spam, and it ends in a ban, then we're both happy and pee'd off - Happy 'cos we've gotten rid of the sucker, but pee'd 'cos he/she/it managed to get off a few rounds into the crowd before we could jump on him/her/it...

If the entire front page of General is locked threads, then there's something really amiss - We've got a big spam problem.
But, guess what? We're on it! How do you, as a normal user know this? Well, all the threads are locked, aren't they?

Personally, every time that I ban someone, or newb slap, or lock a thread, I leave a reason, and my contact details ( in my sig bar - I have my email there ), so everyone here knows how many times I do it.

If there's a sudden increase in locked threads, then it's more than likely that all the mods happened to lock a thread each. It's rare that any of us lock more than one thread in a go unless we are under spam attack.

Also, I'm still after your thoughts on my position ( other than what Exeat says )...

Jess.

Ironically enough, I reckon this thread deserves a nice big padlock, this is doing nothing but wasting the mods' (and some users ) time while they could be out keeping spam from multiplying and generally keeping the peace.

guys, i newer told you all are racist, ehm, it's difficult to explain for me, i'll try in this way:

TGC coverage and intrest for a game of an UK customer: 100%
TGC coverage and intrest for a game of an USA customer: 90%
TGC coverage and intrest for a non UK/USA customer: 70%

well, now use correct english words to explain this.
Maybe (and probably is) only my little and stinked ass idea, why not.
I'm used to discuss and tell to the others my thought.

Sorry to be rude sometimes.

i'm back 'cause i think the deal with zipgames italian publisher is over.... for now.

Excellent, good to hear (about freeware, sorry about the publishing deal). I disagree with your opinion about the interest in games depending on their location, I think its in TGC's interest to cover any good game as it reflects good on them.
Anyway, hope all the arguing hasn't put you off too much.

Ermes no offence... But thats complete rubbish. Just look at girls from the block the TGC competition winner... Where was the guy from?

Russia. (IIRC)

TGC will cover GOOD games wherever they come from... Afterall its about the game, not the creator. IMHO anyway...

DBAlex - I think his point was that Sunday Drivers / Panzers ARE good games and we didn't cover them as much as he'd have liked (i.e. they didn't make newsletter front covers).

They are very good games, they just arrived at an unfortunate time that clashed with various other things so didn't get the exposure they perhaps deserved. It has nothing to do with the country in which they were made.

A great many people think they are thinking when they are really rearranging their prejudices.

Changed it. The old site wasn't my design, it was from another web site (ALTHOUGH on that site it says "free free to use this design for your own sites") and the DTD it used was mucking things around and the nav bar was too small. I wanted something that was clean.

Although I may tweak it over hte ocming montsh to gradually make it "cooler". Bit stark at the moment.
