You don't have to! Its not quite finished yet, and there are a few minor bugs resulting in certain limbs spinning - doesn't affect the movement as they spin lengthways, just makes them flicker abit. The 3D version is WORKING! It only took me a couple of hours to port everything over from 2D into 3D and fix a few mistakes. Not releasing a demo yet, as graphically it looks abit naff (lack of textures), and there are a few things I want to fix and improve. The animation itself is incredible and the quality hasn't deteriorated when being moved to 3D. Just attached a screen shot of the 3D engine so you can get an idea of what it looks like. Though you can't see the movement yet, it looks similar to the 2D version but better as it can move in an axtra dimension.

Image got messed up as I pasted the screenshot over a worse one and it didn't cover the whole thing for some reason. Cropped the image and reattached to eliminate the mess.

@Peter - was that the messed up or the cropped version?

Draw a little text picture to show what is happening in the screenshot.

<<<Realised it messed up the alignment when it posted it onto the forum, so I put it in notepad and took a screenie of it. >>>

Thanks for the comments and sorry for the mishaps with the screen shot and describing it.

Had a look at my program and I think I've found the problem causing the spinning. Its likely that its to do with a typo in my code. I'll have a hunt through my code later (as I'm taking a break for today to do other things). Once I find it, everything in the demo should work properly with no little slip ups. I'll bung some textures on it, and then put up a demo.

Ah...the joys of searching through 1032 lines of code looking for typos where a # has been forgotten or an x has been placed instead of a z , only to find about 3 silly typos that have made whole sections of code fall apart. At least its fixed now and it all works wonderfully. It doesn't suddenly start spinning and won't start flipping and jumping around all over the place.

lol, yeah i wish darkbasic would show you a list of all the unique variable names in your code and where they first appear (so you could spot things like "camerBxposition")

The demo is here...enjoy!

Move the camera around with the up and downkey keys and look around with the mouse. Press space to spawn up to 50 new bodies. They chase their little ball targets.

Known issues:
- limbs look to be slightly apart from each other (will stretch them in next version)
- movement algorithm to be vastly improved - obviously
- no joint restrictions because it looks cooler with daddy long legs; could just specify the values for it if I wanted it
- limbs appear to slice through scenary corners...THEY DON'T! It is just as I rushed the positioning of limb objects and it was more convenient to put it in before the limb collision, seeing as after collision the positions would need recalculating.
- the demo is at freewebs...sorry!

Here is the demo...

I'm going to design how the more advanced logic will be implimented. Since I am making this as a system for others to use, it would be useful to know what features you would like to be possible in the final version. This could be stuff such as holding and reloading guns, jumping, wielding hockey sticks, kicking footballs, wielding guns or more general things, such as support for walking on terrains. Anything or any scenario you want to be possible (for example the scenario I wrote in my online survival horror thread - last page of it) would be appreciated as I can tweak the logic design and improve it so that these things can become a possibility.

when you save from MSPaint to JPG it exports it as capitals. Rich hasn't fixed that issue with explorer browsers yet.. all you need to do to correct this is type .jpg and it'll save it with that extension instead. then you can view them in explorer; it's a retarded forum error if you ask me.

I don't think its a forum error, I think its just how the server works. I remember my website being picky about case, even though other sites aren't.

Thanks! I'll make sure the next demo is more polished with the mouse hidden and an invert option etc. Glad you found it creepy, as thats what I was hoping their movement would look like at the moment. Having them crawling along the side of a wall like that will work wonders for my survival horror game.

That will be fixed with the improvements. I'll be implimenting different grip levels for different surfaces and taking the position of its centre of gravity into account of the grip.
