Ok seems as I have decided to enter this competition I thought I should start a Competition picture thread for all entrants to show off their work in progress if they so wish.

Here (hopefully) are my main charactors so far (they may well change a little), we have the Ladders or part of a set to the left of the image followed by Mr Chuckie Egg in the middle and Mrs Chuckie Egg to the left, this game is intended to replicate the retro 2D gameplay in a modern 3D world and if succesful I may well add to the concept a new set of adventures in an after competition release, I would like to hear any views of the work so far in an honest oppinion please, many thanks..

Incase the picture doesn't show here is the address to view it, nothing impressive here just a place to hold the uploads : http://mysite.freeserve.com/Chuckie_CompPage/

My game is a remake of Rick Dangerous. I havent got a real level or demo together. I only have my tech demo for now. It has almost full movement physics except for the crawling on the flaw! This tech demo is nothing special, its just a test. I will work on a level soon.

Looks good Matto!

Cool I look forward to seeing more..

As far as "Chuckie Egg: The Retro Days" goes, I changed Mrs Chuckies hair colour to the same as lips and eyelash's on request of my wife, she thought it would be more tastful for girls/ladies playing it, and I have to say it looks pretty groovy too(well as groovy as it could on my poor models). I am working on the main game principles right now and stress testing DB/DBP to see how rich I can get the game content, I have pretty much decided not to use textures due to the 10 meg compressed limit of the final zip, and being it is based on the original retro game I thought sticking to colors near what was used in the original would help Keep the retro feeling, we'll see soon enough I suppose, it is only based on it not an exact replica...

yes thanks, especially as that was the first set of models I am pleased with myself now.. , I am designing my first 5 or so levels now and will hope to have them running pretty soon(week or so) now I got a smooth camera and finally sorted my array probs out I am on a roll so it seems.. for a change!

The hard part is the animation of the players and charactors as I like to that in DB code and since the main commands I use are now obsolite in DBPRO, I may have to stick with a DB v1 release which is a shame as DBPRO is good with frame rates... maybe I need to look into pro's abilities a little more in the animating field.. but so far I can't see how to do animate in code with the current set of commands that are left? anyway I'll post a new shot when I get something mroe concrete in place.

Ok Finally I got a level 1 Pic for this baby, I got loads to do with improving textures and all the main gameplay.. and at present it is built in DBV1 and will be ported to DBPRO ASAP.., nothing special but thought it might show you all what I am upto and there is nothing to worry about here .
PIC 1, Level 1 in 3D (not finished):-

Pic 2, the Family so far (Will be remodelled at a later date):-

Sorry the level pic is a little blurred, I had to resize it and that was a side effect, you can possibly make out the original CHuckie egg level 1 in the upper left corner for those not remembering it.

Anim8or is my favourite and only modelling prog, I wish it had .x suport but thats about it.. I am not great with it but I know what It is I am making, lol I made or more likely and making and refining the textures within it too. saves having to buy the texture maker right now, although I will in the future, you know it's a shame TM isn't a freebee too.. but in honesty I am happy to pay for that.

Anyway, I am now rebuilding the levels from scrathc csince I thought of an easier way to do it.. believe me when I say level 1 took 2 days.. hehe oh well back to level deving..

Anim8or is good. I use it. I always say its good but people always put it down...anywayz, nice models .

BTW there is a function in DB that converts 3DS to X files. So export ur 3DS files and convert them using this:

i dont know if it works with DBPro though

Ok just thought i'd say good luck to all and myself ... i've been having a bit of a nasty time with my program because theres are soooooo many things to keep control of.
If you don't already know i'm remaking Dungeon master from the Atari and i'm almost ready to start making the game .
No i'm not really that far behind but the dungeon maker has taken a lot longer than i expected.

I'll have a go at an image link, - they never seem to work for me .

here's a new pic of the Chuckie Egg remake(still to rename..) the same level I am affraid but re-built (you'l probably not notice..) I have added the new textures which need a slight adjustment still all be it minor.. anyway it's a darn site easier to code in now, before I was programming all the individual pieces and now I have made a function(my first ever believe it or not.. thats a major achievement.. lol) to do it and I am using platform sized objects rather than 6 objects per 100*100*10 Platform piece... anyway here is the pic..

That Looks Excellent, tight competition

From my RGT post -
"Yeah, I've seen everyone else posting early screenshots of their entry engine, so seeing as I don't show much (anything) here I though I'd show mine. It doesn't show much as the engine can't really be seen well, but at least I know all my functions are working extremely well.

Oh! And it's an FF1 remake incase you didn't notice"

I think I would be lucky to get on the DB demo list with mine.. not saying prizes don't drive me forward but I doubt I am good enough to get first as my art is bad, sound is ok..ish, programming abilities are very poor after 2 years nearly but still I'm pressing on none the less, it's a sharp learning curve I am on here, which is good.

I look forward to seeing the pics Sasuki..

well art isn't everything Matto
as long as a game is fun to play - people will play it

they'll bitch about the graphics, but atleast they're playing it (^_^)
which is better than a game that they rave about the graphics but don't ever play cause it crap

lol, yes thats quite true, lets face it the retro games had to be fun to play as the graphics side of things wasn't always an option, as long as it looked something like the idea was about all they had to do.. I just hope I can keep the addictive gameplay in the 3D re-make as thats what kept me playing the first one.. anyway the judges will be first to say I am sure.

On another note, it would be good to have a public vote afterwards just to see what the difference of oppinion is if any?, have a download area and the ability to rate the game once downloaded, give it a time limit and after a month or whatever we can see who's was the most popular. No doubt thats too much trouble though.

About the whole models thing- I agree! Take ff7 for instance- the models were CRAP (or at least I thought so, they werent even great in the fmvs) but the game was GREAT so people played it!

Who would play FFX if the gameplay stunk?

Can someone remind me why I am doing this???

I've been on programming for 8 hours straight and finally achieved what I wanted and what would probably take most an hour at best.. it's amazing how much you find needs doing when you get into these things, I am trying to keep it reasonably similar in playing style to the original but thats pretty hard with 3D, although I think it's getting there now(I hope at least), it's too early in the morning to tell, there's still a couple of nigglies to get sorted and once they're done I think it's the home straight.. all be it the longest home straight in the world.. and I thought I picked an easy one to do.. I just knew I should have picked pong, lol. oh well I am sure your all making something alot worse and wondering what the winging is all about. oh well better catch some zzz's ready for tomorrow's session I suppose. I'll get some new shots up once I make some progress that you can actually see, probably after the weekend.

Not that exciting but this is a screen from my Metroid remake. Currently I'm controlling a guided missile (a step up from Metroid's non-guidable missiles). I think it shows my particle effects nicely

@Petrat, it's really nice to see what you making and dizzy looks very good but have you ever heard of 800*600 screen mode, it's really usefull for not making everyone have to scroll around madly just to read a post large pics just make people not so bothered about seeing whats going to load up.., I don't mean to be rude but can you possibly lower the resolution of your pics please to something more friendly

Well, You take the high road (3D), and I'll take the low (2D). I have just finished a beta of my Dizzy game, Entitled: "Dizzy Haunted!", which is only missing an items menu and enemies. One I have finished those, I'll move on to more textures and then more rooms. Hopefully I'll have a beta for y'all to try in a few days.
