From simply reading through the help file I see it possible to bump map a model loaded from say a .x file

however this seems to be rather messy considering you cant line up the bump mapping ahead of time the way you do with a texture... or does the bump mapping use the texture coords associated with a model?

Also.. is it possible to bump map a matrix or would this be silly?

no, no effect would ever be silly if it looks good, even on a matrix or plane.

I would rather USE VB and the DX SDK....

well ... bump mapping a matrix on the one hand would add subtle depth to the game, however on the other no one will really ever notice it - so it'll just be eating up useless processing power

i mean bump mapping oftenly is never used to a great effect because to most it is just a tool rather than an extra perspective to you game graphics. Besure to test to see what you like to see, however with a good texture it is entirely possible to give the illusion of bump mapping without ever using it - Jedi Knight 2 is a good example of this

F**ping bumpmapping seems to be toilet food! Why is it I could play recommended 400meg games pefectly on 400meg machine but when they are written in direct x8 and recommend 700 meg I have to switch off most of the graphic options and reduce detail despite the fact I have
Over the recommendations!
Double the Ram!
Partitioned hard drive of 2 gig for each game!
A partitioned drive solely for swapfiling/virtual memory!

I bet its because I dont have all the fancy graphix features games today expect. Thats fine but why do new games on minimum look worse than hidden and dangerouse(un-vamped) or quake 3 on maximum. Something sick!!!!!!!!! is going on in my life.

And its not just me. People with the maxi-spec machines, 3 I know, and a bloke in a local shop, are asking just what do you need to make a descent game run smoothly at maximum.

I have done design work and there is such thing as overdoing effects and detail....

well that was a colourful way of putting it ... but yeah i kinda feel the same way mate.

this why most things i develop with 3 tier machines in mind.

Pentium2 300Mhz - 32Mb Ram - 8Mb Direct3D (TnT2) Card
AMD Athlon 600Mhz - 64Mb Ram - 32Mb Direct3D (GeForce2mx) Card
AMD AthlonXP 1,000Mhz - 256Mb Ram - 64Mb Direct3D (GeForce3 Ti)

perhaps not the best possible setups in the world, but each machine i basically assign a level ... right now i call them by console names

1) Game64
2) Game128
3) Game256

the aim is to get the game working smoothly (around 30-40fps) on the Game64 machine with a look similar to the Nintendo64 ... we then improve on this and go for PS2 style graphics on the Game128 ... and finally we arrive at the Game256 which is let loose time

i mean i think most people should give themselves standards to work towards, that way you can make sure the most likely setups will be together

I dont mind extra effects for people who can accommodate them but if I am paying 35 pounds for the same game as everyone else I expect it to at least look as good as Q3 did(thus I would be very happy).

I think though, somewhere a massive jump in CPU time wastin was acheived and now its either awesom graphics or doggy-doo graphics.

Now when a game looks and plays poorly I feel ripped off!!!
