(Probably not the best site to post this, but there are a few successful people here )

I've been programming in Java and C# for a while now, and I'm needing a source of income now. The problem is I have just had knee surgery and will be doing physical theorpy for a while and will have a really messed up time scedual, so I need something that I can do when I have time for it. So I've been looking at freelance sites (elance, getafreelancer, stuff like that) but the problem is that the other people have a LOT more experience than I do and people will choose them over me.

So I'm here wondering if anyone has success in Freelance programming and where they get their projects from (online?, people you know?) and if anyone has any suggestions, Jimmy excluded

Im deffinately not the most experienced person with PHP programming, but I can always find a job in 3 days max. Usually overnight. The key is to post a bid in every single job that is doable, then post all the good qualities of your work. Never mention anything bad about yourself(common sense), and as you get projects, you get reviews, as you get good reviews, more people are willing to hire you. Best programming freelance site I have found.

I am a freelance/consultant programmer. I just scored a 1 year contract thru a friend of mine who's also a consultant, who is building up his company. He managed to get a large contract and he brought me on to be his lead developer for this project, but not as a w2 employee - as a freelancer (plus I maintain my own dev company which is separate and aside) He will be hiring 2 other people that I will be managing at the client's onsite location. Yay.

a good plce to look is guru.com and maybe rentacoder.com

Doesn't pay as much as it's a rewarding so I can't recommend it to everyone but it's definitely fun to see your stuff on tv and such.

Leys, does this include accepting payment from your client, then running off with his money, and ignoring the second person you happened to be working with? Because that's kinda of what you did to us.

Oh, and at Joel - check out www.gamedev.com as they have people looking for programmers, and have a look at www.gamasutra.com for a similar thing.

Hope that helps.

Like I said, I never got paid. I thought it was a good deal because he paid 50% up front to my scriptlance account, but after I was out for like 2 days, he had it removed from my account. So that project was a failure. Next time I just have to realise that I shouldn't work for 15yr olds. Sorry about all that happened.

Yes, originally he sent me $100 as a down payment, but after I returned from a certain accident I had, the money was removed from my account and haven't gotten anything since. However, I still have all the files and he hasn't recieved anything, so i don't know what his deal is.

Yes I noticed the guy was abit of a nut-job. Kept yelling at me asking for my phone number while I tried to calmly explain to him that the long-distance phone bill would cost more then the entire project. Then he told me "No, I own you and now you work for me. Make me a template"...(for which I never got payed btw) Anyway, a lesson well learned.

I'm not Jimmy, so does that mean I'm Included? If I am yay. And to get a freelancer you have to run down your street naked with your e-mail address tatooed on your a$$, then people will start calling you.

Dorkwin, What else do you need? They've given you like 10 sites.

A good place to start, however, may be to actually learn to program.

That's not a death threat! That's a saying you imbicile. The little bit of respect I had for you has just taken a plummet.

Just so you don't do this again, I'm going to teach you.

Examples:

saying:"What goes around comes around"

death threat:"I will burn your eyes out and then drown you in your own urine"

saying:"You can't make something from nothing"

death threat:"I will chop you into a million peices, starting with your d!ck."

saying:"Give a man fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat forever"

death threat:"You'll be sleepin' wit' da fishes"
