Moderator Warning To HP Fans - This thread contains *serious Book 6 spoilers*. Do not read on unless you already know what happens

====

Just finished reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Took me most of the day to do it, but it was worth it.

some thoughts: (warning--serious spoilers! and I mean SERIOUS! don't hit expand unless you're read the ENTIRE book!)

I must say tho, I liked this one even better than the others... The series is definately getting darker and darker It all started with four, I think, with cedric dying via lord voldemort (sp?) I still say JK Rowling's not spending enough time developing the ideas in the books, after all -

fourth book - we meet cedric and he dies
fifth book - Harry finally meets sirus black and he dies
sixth book - [deleted], the most centeral character ever, dies

Argh! Don't say somebody dies!

Didn't even know it had come out, Mom walked in from the afternoon errands and handed it to me. Costco had it for $16 hardback .

Maybe JK Rowling knows she's just pumping out things people want and she's angry about it, and that's why they're getting darker.

What a loser. People like that need to be shot.

I read my summer reading books, Farenheit 451 and Anthem, in a couple of days. They were really good-quality reading material instead of slowly tiring franchise.

You're a very morbid guy, Leys.

Books suck! Theyre such a waste of time unless they teach you how to build a time machine, or martial arts.

Fahrenheit 451 is the best book ever. I'll have to read Anthem too, because Bear here seems to be the only person who can enjoy a REAL book... or two.

Not ashamed to admit I waited in a long long line for 9 hours to get my copy, and then stayed up the whole night reading it .

Probably the best book yet, and I predict a few 'twists' coming up in book seven. Looks like she's finally seriously straying from the year-of-school-then-fight-Voldie formula.

I did find it very unfair how he sort of tossed Ginny aside at the end while allowing Ron and Hermione to stay with him. Pulling a Spider-Man. Hopefuly she'll knock some sense into him early in book seven.

I found the repeated references at flipping the bird without actually mentioning/clearly describing the gesture or what it implied rather amusing. She's having a hard time trying to cater to such a wide audience.

If I looking for blog

My problem with the series is that she designed the books for the hype from day one.

There are so many other books out there that are better written that deserve more attention than these.

I hate her.

I haven't read Farenheight 451, but I have read Anthem a few times. That book is GENIUS. Have you read any other books by Ayn Rand? I'm in the middle of reading through Fountainhead again right now. It's awesome.

Just finished reading the story myself... I ABSOLUTELY DETESTED THIS BOOK.

From chapter one, it seems that her writing style has changed over from the previous books, and to my opinion, not for the better.. I'm not saying everyone should hate this book only telling how i feel about what happened in it.. I've put my text in a code box, so as not to ruin anything about the book... Simply dont open the codebox if you dont want to know what happens..

I agree with Ian T

Quote: "Looks like she's finally seriously straying from the year-of-school-then-fight-Voldie formula"

Yeah that was getting to wear a little thin... had to keep it interesting for, what, four books? 5th only sorta counts, after all there was Umbridge causing all that trouble throughout the year, and then they dash off for the minstery of magic... hmmmmmm

This topic should be titled "Harry Potter 6 (Spoilers Section)"

I think that Rowling had been getting too many complaints about the "Perfect Ending" that she typically wrote with. It was only at book 4 that someone actually died, and he was basically a no body. Book 5 killed off Black, aperantly she didn't get enough of a response. so she now issues book 6. Kills off "A VERY important person". Thus in book 7 Harry will die, or at least all of his friends.

HEAVY SPOILER WARNING

Quote: " My problem with the series is that she designed the books for the hype from day one."

She was a struggling single mother whose publisher told her she barely stood a chance getting on store shelves from day one. Hype had very little to do with it

Quote: "The last two books have stunned me, the people that Harry have felt closest to have died. Sirius and Dumbledore.. Where were the castles houseelves that had such unimaginable powers? Why hadnt harry called Kreiver to help? Or Dobby?"

Harry was perfectus total-ified, he couldn't open his mouth to call for help, never mind that he was in something of a state of shock.

I'm not sure why you're so angry she's killed off the people Harry feels closest too-- that's the entire point, that's exactly what Voldie is trying to do and the reprecussions it has on his character are, I think, almost flawlessly portrayed by her. She's done a fantastic job showing very clearly how dangerous and dark the world she's writing about actually is.

Quote: "Obviously Harry hasnt thought about next year... He simply thinks he's going to walk away from everyone and pursue his own "goals". In all truth, the teachers and the order of the phoenix will stop him, or atleast help him. He will not simply vanish from them."

That's the point, he's going to need and use their help; he's hardly stupid. But he's not going back to school and he's not continuing his life as usual. I'm pretty sure he thinks, on some level at least, that he's going to die killing Voldemort (he very well might, kid's books or not, at the rate the series is going).

Personally I find his character to be quite tragic by the end of book 6. Cedric's death screwed him up a bit, but his friends were there for him to help him get through it; Sirius' death layered on even more guilt and anger which he still hasn't gotten rid of, but with Dumbledore's passing I think he's finally seeing that his purpose is far more important than his or his friends' lives, and in that he's found focus.

Funny how many parralels there are at this point between the HP series and a good superhero movie (Spiderman, Batman Begins).

Quote: "I think that Rowling had been getting too many complaints about the "Perfect Ending" that she typically wrote with."

Books one and two may qualify but she's been having darker, grimer endings since Book 3.

Oh yeah, and did anyone else notice the similarities between the Death Eater attacks in the books and the paranoia it causes, and the terrorist attacks of the modern world? Kind of odd how when that whole thing started in Book 4, there was really no real life parralel for most people, but the 'world of fear' she's writing about seems a lot more real today.

Fair enough, why didnt Dumbledore call upon the houseelves then? I find it somewhat hard to believe that at the school the only people fighting are the teachers and students... What about the ghosts, the centaurs(or anything in the forest for that matter) etc.?

Yeah and her writing also had nothing to do with her success. She got lucky that a few celebrities picked it up. It's all bull crap and could have happened to any book. But I suppose it's good that it happened to Harry Poter, because I'd hate to have to despise a real piece of writing.

Are you refering to the films, or the publishers.

Yes, she does say that "someone" discovered her writing in hp1. That she worked at a dinner (i think) and wrote the chapters on napikens and such.

If you are refeing to the films. Yes, they sucked.

I don't think you understand how slow I read, lol. It took me like 3 days to read the fifth book, and that was reading just about non-stop. I rarely ever sit down and read a book, thus i am very slow at reading...mostly because my thoughts tend to wander off during the boring parts.

I dont think that's really fair Rob K. Jimmy is interested in discussing Harry Potter via debating its literary quality.

Izzy, I first heard of Ayn Rand when we got our reading list. Once I give Harry Potter a quick read I'll probably be picking up a couple of her books. Anthem had a power ending, I'm really interested in seeing her other work.

As for Harry Potter, although it was a fun read when it first came out, we can't deny that the plot is getting a little old, though I'm interested since you guys have mentioned she's exploring new things in #6. And of course, all the Mothers Against Violent Videogames Organizations also typically despise Harry Potter, so I get a certain satisfaction when doing things that make those organizations irritated. I'll post again once I've read it.

By the way, it's funny and typical that people who cry foul of books despise Farenheit 451.

Farenheit 451...

I want that in the near future, when I become an all powerful dictator those under me shalt not read books. All thought that is not thought by our publicly elected dictator is not permited. Imagining things is punishable by DEATH.

I got a real kick out of that book, although it was a bit long. (NOTE: Only thing similar to the book is that it was a "Publically Elected Dictator (in a sense)" and that books were burned because they allowed people to think of different things.
