Well,

Summer is in full flow and so is the cricket.

After the sucess of the OneDaySeries for England against the Aussies I thought we had a pretty good chance.

Well when the Aussies were at 66-4 I thought it would be easy...they were all out for 190... easy?

Wrong.

So England finish up at 92-7 at the end of day one. What were we doing?

Any one got any other thoughts on Englands or Aussies chances and any one pledging who's going to win? My moneys on England 3-1 (one test being a draw)

Anyone else?

Well IIRC we actually drew that. Thanks to "Gypsy's" no ball it meant we were level on runs. A draw...

Nope Powersoft, pure unadultarated puzzlement .

I never understood Cricket, not the sport itself but the politics and snobbery that goes on with all the old farts that organise it - that just makes watching Cricket incredibly dull to a lot of people.

In case you didn't hear, we won the first test by about 240 runs and England are now in a state of cowering in fear.

Yeah, and it's good to see Umpire Bucknor giving excellent decisions (i.e. Marto's LBW).

There have been some shocking decisions with regards to LBW dismissals. Flintoff was out on 8, from a Warne delivery, but Mr. Bucknor does not have the skills to read his bowling. He went on to make 102.

The third (or TV) umpire should be used for all LBW decisions and difficult caught behinds.

Oh, and let's not forget England's tactics of bringing out really good fielders, while resting their fast bowlers, who field like crap (Steve Harmison), when they have nothing wrong with them.

Australia can do that, and for your information Simon Jones went to hospital meaning a replacement was necessary. Plus if "nature calls..."

Wait, I missed the end of the test, what happened?

Flintoff was cleaned bowled and then it was just tail-enders facing Warne and Lee.... surely England collapsed.

Nope Giles and Hoggard stayed the course.

The pressure got to Geraint Jones and he gave Kaspovich (sp) a Dolly catch.

England played well and deserved the win but Australia fought hard and Lee and Warne bowled well.

It was a great finish.

LOL! Who said anything about Ponting? Ponting run himself out, no ifs or buts.

Anyway, I didn't catch the end of the test, it was already early morning when England starting batting, but from what I've read it was very good bowling by the Aussies. They now have to win at The Oval to keep the ashes, England only have to draw.

On the other hand, if umpire Billy Bowden didn't make the mistake of dismissing Kasprowicz (his hand was not on the bat, when it hit it), Australia would have already won the Ashes. See how much weighting dodgy decisions have on a series?

Bring on the third umpire!

Flintoff (thats a player) was "bowled out". His "wickets" were knocked out of the ground

Quote: "it was just tail-enders facing Warne and Lee.... "
Players who aren't really very good batsmen and are at the "tail" of the batting order

Quote: "Nope Giles and Hoggard stayed the course"
The players Ashley Giles and Matthew Hoggard weren't "out" but stayed to the end and helped England "win"

Quote: "he gave Kaspovich (sp) a Dolly catch."
Dolly:- refering to the difficulty of the "catch" in this case it was very simple.

And, unlike Football, there are variations of the game. Twnty20 for example is more of a slog fest trying to hit it out of the ground than Test Cricket is.

Not really a cricket fan here. I used to play for my city when I was a nipper, but never really liked watching it. It's bizarre to me that a little pot of ashes brings everyone out onto the street in patriotic celebration, but each to their own.

I suppose if you're an unimaginative boring fart, cricket is an ace sport to follow. It takes all day for many days so you don't have to worry about figuring out how to entertain yourself.

The way test cricket is played these days, it is very rarely boring. Especially when people like Flintoff, Hayden and Gilchrist are in form.

Anyway, congratulations to England on winning the Ashes. But take some pictures etc and be prepared to give them back next year.

This series was overshadowed by shocking umpiring. The TV umpire should be used for all difficult and close decisions, especially those that can turn a series. eg: Kasprowicz's dismissal in the 2nd test. If Australia won that test, they would have won the Ashes.

On the TV here they added up all the bad decisions and they actually evened out. The weirdest/most annoying thing was Flintoff hitting one of the stumps clean and the ball just bouncing off like it had hit a lamp post (?!)

Quote: "...Yeah, it's the first time they've won in 16 years, and they only really won by 2 runs"

I think you'll find we basically actually won the series 4-1.
If it wasn't for the rain we DEFINATELY would have won the second test. We also clearly would have won the final test if it had been played out to the end (over six days or whatever)

Fact is England were the better team in every test apart from the first one.

The main thing that annoyed me was the Aussie guy on the TV saying that losing McGrath was really why they lost the series. He was out for about 1 match! Jones was out for pretty much the whole series!

What about when Flintoff was given not out, when he was clearly LBW to a Shane Warne slider when he was on 8 and went on to make over 100!? That's a match changing, wrong, decision.

-We won the 1st test.
-You did win the 2nd test (by 2 runs).
-The 3rd test was drawn with Australia needing just 51 runs on the final day.
-You won the 4th test.
-And the 5th test was very evenly matched, we had only just begun our second innings when play ended so anything could have happened if there were no rain interruptions, I really can't see how England could have won it though considering many of our batsmen had refound form (Hayden and Langer).

And no, there is no chance at all you could have pulled off a 4-1 series win. The whole series was relatively evenly matched.
