It's nowhere near finished but I thought I'd post up an early screenshot of my entry for the competition. The models and texturing are taking up most of my time at the moment but I have got player movement, animation, collision and bubble code/collision done so it's quite fun to jump around the empty test level at the moment. I'm kinda rushing through this development cos I haven't got a lot of spare time but hopefully I'll be able to go back over every thing and refine it a bit better before the deadline. If all goes to plan the release version will have multiple enemies based on the original baddies, multiple levels and bonuses etc. I've downloaded a version of the original so I'm going to try and keep it as close to it as I can. Also I'm concentrating on a one player only version so it's unlikely it will be 2 player to begin with. Anyway here's a pic.

Looking GOOD! Bubble Bobble was one of my all time favourite games (I probably shouldn't say this, right? being a judge and all) - so I really look forward to seeing an entry.

Bubble Bobble was the coolest game game for the NES. If your copy is half as fun as the original, you're a shoe in for first place. Best of luck to ya.

Thanks for the comments guys. Player to level and bubble to level collision is pretty much done although there is still room to improve it. The bubbles behave as they should, they float up and when they hit the underside of a platform they float along 'til they get free and they also bounce a little off the walls etc. And you can drop through the hole at the bottom of the level and you fall back into it from above. I'm using static collision boxes for the level and will probably use a simple distance function for the bubble to enemy collision and enemy to player collision. Did a test last night with the sync off and 50 bubbles and got 300+ fps so early frame rate tests are very promising.

The basic idea of Bubble Bobble is that you're a lizard that shoots bubbles. You have to trap enemies in the bubbles and then hit them while still trapped in the bubble, where there turn to food where you can eat them for points. You can also hop on the bubbles to get to hard to raech places. The levels are a single screen and there are over 200 levels. To complete a level you must clear it of enemies. Very fun.

I have an emulator and I can play bubble bobble for both NES and SNES on my computer so I know how fun it is! This program will probably be a blast!!

Emulator Good... Stolen Roms Bad
anyone who wants to play the originals but with better Qualty through Rom's grab a machine known as the Doctor64 - they're pretty pricey at £380 ... however you can copy games from Nintendo based machines (NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA & N64) and use them on machine.

Even has a handy CDRW builtin so you can make game compilation CDs and run the games from CD for the original machine or use on Emulators
remember emulating a system isn't illegal its copying the games which you havn't purchased outright (e.g. the Cartridges) is

Why play it on a PC? Half the experance has nothing to do with the game. I got a box of candycanes so that I can play Super Mario Bros. on the NES and have it feel just like the first I played it. I play Zelda 2 just after going over bourd with the Frebreeze just to get the sensation nastalga.

lol... yeah i'm an artist - i always want everything to look new. improved and better than ever with the minmum of fuss.

plus its easier carrying around a CD from country to country with 200+ games than several consoles and the carts which the airport keeps putting through that stupid magnetic machine even when i explicity say its sensitive computer equippment and shouldn't go through just to check it by hand!

Nah, there is no way. You just can't beat the sensation of the controlor in you hand, the 19 inch tv alit with vintage 1987 graphics, nothing can top it. By the by my copy of Bubble Bobble was just won on E-bay for $19, money well spent. Also got a Super Famicom with Zelda 3 and Mother 2.

well,

1) u can get a USB thingy that lets u use controls form old consoles.

2)You can get something that lets u use a tv instead of a monitor.

3) With emulators you can have the graphics how you want, origonal or enhanced ;-p

Oh brother, like you can find a NES USB controlor? Faces it, Emulators are wrong, personlly I find it hard to believe how many people use them here, think of the irony. How many of you guys would like you game you sent years on get ripped and sent all over the net free of charge?

It's coming along steadily, not getting as much time at it as I'd like but I've got one of the badguys modeled and animated and some basic ai in there too. Basically I'll have some of the enemies just running and jumping around blind (was very funny to watch them the first time) whilst others will fire at you if they see you or some will follow you to a certain extent. I've also got some bonus fruit modeled for bonus pickups. Bursting bubbles and jumping on them is also coded in. Still to do is create proper levels and populate them with more badguys. I might post another screenshot next week if I get enough done.

Well, i would just like to say that me and my buddy are also making a Bubble bobble remake for the competition.
I hope we prove worthy of competition.

Seriously, it was the first game I thought of making after i heard about the comp. easy to modify and enhance, fun to play.

Good luck with your Dizzy game petra, the Dizzy games were good, I think I beat Tresure Island Dizzy but I can't remember for sure.

i get all of my games from GameStation and Electronics Boutique Vintage - they're always selling all the old games, but as i said ... i'd personally carry a laptop from country to country with a single CD full of several hundred games - rather than several consoles, a mini-TV to play them on, setup a different channel per console, plus all of the controllers and game carts which don't like extreme cold, extreme heat, any magnetism and oftenly get so dusty that you have to clean them prior to use.

I have an N64 controller i use for Nintendo based games, and a Playstation - DualShock for the other consoles... all my games are copyied via official copying products and are my own

its the best way to make sure i always have my old games whereever i go, plus i can spice up the graphics as much as i like ... make it smoother, run faster, slower, use enhanced 3D (like with Playstation Titles)
there are just endless possibilities that you can't get with a console that you can with a PC.

i bought the games for the games, not the console experience - they're just as playable on the computer with an emulator and its far easier for me to use them like that.

Plus, you can get emulators with a toggle from normal emulation to full speed emulation... So intead of playing Dizzy, I play Super Caffinated Dizzy.

Arrow, the game will be one player only. I want to concentrate on getting a fun single player experience with lot's of content going for the competition. I think most of the people that play our games are looking for fun single player action first and foremost but multiplayer is always a nice bonus. I may add a multiplayer bubble arena mode after the competition if there's any interest, but I don't see myself having enough time before the deadline.
