Intro:
I'm going against what I believe in by comparing HL2 and D3, I still, to this very second, believe that you cannot legitly compare HL2 and D3, as they are both FPS, they are not the same type of game, at all!
But since everyone compares the two, i'm going to give some input of my own. Completly unbiased, and tell what I HONESTLY believe about both games.

Test Machine (my computer )
Radeon 9800 Pro w/128mb DDR on board
Athlon XP 2600+ 1.9ghz
512mb RAM
5.1 Surround sound :
17" Flatscreen CRT
nice beefy mouse to fit my oversized hands
and a standard keyboard

all custom built of course

DOOM 3:

I bought Doom 3 the day it came out for a total of about $60, before that, and all the way up to now, i have never paid for a game over $30, but i bought it anyway, and I still DONT regret the purchase. But I am not hooked on that game, for ONE specific reason, I'm WAY too jumpy! I just jump about everything. But I mananged to get half way through that game before I reformatted my hard drive, but i backed up my save files, i just lost them so i lost intrest because all the work i put into that game. The graphics were AWESOME, I could play on the HIGH setting for graphics (the second best) without a problem, which is saying something, and I could play on ULTRA (the highest) until more than 1 enemies appear People say the game was too dark etc, and it was stupid you cant hold your light on the gun, but it really is the theme and style of the game. I played with some flashlight mods, and didnt like them as much.
But i was completly dissapointed with the Multiplayer. I know they werent even going to HAVE multiplayer in the first place, but if you're going to screw something up that much, just dont include it. I mean, FOUR levels? that SUCKED! And it's multiplayer now, you're not fighting the devils of mars, give us some LIGHT! I want to be able to FIND my openents. Seriously. And they "tryed" to fix this in the expansion. yeah, they added 2 guns or so, and 4 more levels (i think, maybe more, i only played it once) But it still sucked. Still cant see anything, they didnt make MP any better in the EXP. than they did in the standard D3.
so:
Graphics: AWESOME, couldn't ask for more
Sounds: AWESOME, fit perfectly, didnt notice a problem
Cut scenes: GREAT, The people looked almost REAL! I mean, they arnt perfect, but, it's not prerecorded crap like in FF games. It's using the same engine that you are playing the game in. The people's facial animations (from what i remember) was pretty darn good. But the story line was a little...seemed kinda forced, if you know what i mean, i'm not saying that it's bad, because it's not, but just not an AWESOME orriginal story.
Physics: OK, It's not lacking, but it doesnt seem to have anything revolutionary in this field.
Weapons: FUN! The weapons are awesome, I go back to the game just to play with them
Multiplayer: SUCKED, big time. If you want a multiplayer FPS, stick with Quake 2/3 or CS: (S)(CZ)
AI: Not too good. You can tell it's script, they teleport in from no where, but they are kinda freaky. Some guys to "RAMBO" at you and WANT to die, the human like guys actually try to save themselves by hiding, but it's still a basic script: "Shoot, hide, reload, shoot, hide..." I wish we would get a game with real AI some time soon. but i wont get my hopes up. Maybe after my 2 year mission we'll get something going.
Overall: , the game was really fun, if i get my nerves back up, i'll play again some time

HALF LIFE 2:

I just bought Half Life 2 last week for a total of $27.XX, off ebay, never used, not even opened, good deal if i do say so myself.
At first, I just kept getting stuck, because I forgot about the E button to lift things and open doors. So I was pushing boxes around and getting really mad at Valve for putting something so stupid in a game. I'm kindof confused about the storyline but of course, i never played HL1 yeah yeah yeah, shutup, i dont WANT to play it. I'll just look up the story online some time. People made a big deal about Cut Scenes being a PART of the game, and how awesome it was, blah blah blah. Yeah, it was a cool idea. But it's kindof annoying, because i'm trying to figure out what's going on, and i have to make sure i'm following these people around. Just let me WATCH what's going on, give me a little break here. And you have to look right at the people who are talking so you can hear them, otherwise the 3d sound makes it quieter (if you have headphones on, havnt been able to play this yet with my 5 speaker setup, too many little kids around ) But, life goes on, nothing serious.
HL2 deathmatch is somewhat fun too, but i'm not good enough to play online because everyone has been playing for so long and i just suck naturally at FPS deathmatch games . CS:S is a really awesome game too, i've put more minutes on that game than i have on HL2 thus far :p, but this review isnt for that game.
I havnt noticed anything out of the ordinary with the AI.
The graphics are good, i have them on the highest setting I can without getting any lag. But i was honestly expecting more. One thing i noticed is that no one has long hair. They either are wearing a hat, or have their hair up, why? because they didnt want to make hair, and that's just weak. The people's faces are kinda cool, i really like them, really real looking, just like the people in D3. But the graphics were just lacking something, maybe it's because my settings arnt high enough, we'll find out when the Nv 7800 GTX graphics card is under $150
Now to talk about my favorite part of this game. The physics. I would personally pay $20 for a demo on that physics engine. It's so AMAIZING! I have never seen anything like it. The puzzle in under that bridge near the start of the game where you have to pick up the cinder blocks and put them on that ramp to make it teeter the other way. It's so REAL! the way almost every object can be thrown, or kicked, you shoot a bucket, and it goes flying like what a real bucket would've looked like! It's amaizing! With any luck, they will releace the source code to this game like ID is with Q3 now. but i doubt it. Maybe they'll just give out their Physics engine. It's so amaizing, if we can do physics like this on todays machines, just wait to see what it looks like after the Physics Processor (PPU) catches on!

Now for my ratings:
Graphics: 1/2 AWESOME! They were good, just wasnt quite what i was expecting, the game was hyped up too much. So many good things in this game for people to hype up, and graphics arnt one of them. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Sounds: GREAT. Didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with this, but what is there to expect? Sounds fit, the music is quite awesome actually, the way the music kicks in at an intense part, but that's not orriginal, something we saw in Halo a few years ago.
Cut scenes: GOOD. Good idea, just too annoying, when i hit a cut scene in a game, i want to watch it, not play it. But again, like in Doom3, I like how they dont have to go to a different engine to make the cutscenes AMAIZING like in FF, they can stick with what they already have.
Physics: FREAKING AMAIZING!!!! Never have seen anything like it! like I said before, I would pay just to play with the physics engine.
Weapons: , nothing too orriginal here. Doom/Quake games always have their BFG that are really cool, this one has it's GGun, but seriously, nothing way amaizing.
Multiplayer: I'm not counting CS:S as part of HL2, they're only games built on the same engine, but not the same game, so this is HL2 Deathmatch, it was GOOD, but we need some better levels.
AI: Not too good. Same as Doom 3, nothing but very appearant scripting. The troops appear out of nowhere, shoot you, hide for a second, shoot some more. It's stupid, could be better. I know this because i played Counter Stike: Condition Zero, the bots in that game, amaizing.
Overall: AWESOME GAME! The engine is near perfect. this game makes me want to give up sleep just to play it. It's easilly one of the best GAMES (not just FPS) ever made!

CONCLUSION:

Both games are awesome. That's my honest opionion. Both could use some work, but no huge complaints against either of them. If someone asked me "what game would you recommend me, D3 or HL2?" I would say, they're both two completly different games. If you like crapping your pants every time you turn a corner, get D3, if you like puzzles and story, get HL2, if you like Multiplayer, get Q3, UT2004, or CS

And the first person to tell me "you're a retard it's apparent [game X] is so much better!!" or anything like it, can go shove their heads down a latrine or something. because i really dont want to hear it, this is my honest opionions on both games.

never said it was professional or proof read or anything. hey, I'm a computer nerd, writing a review on video games, not an english major. I threw it together whilst writing a post. Didnt think about it much, not really organized.

How does using the HL2 SDK make you a Valve Employee?

Beats me. I don't understand why anyone would get the impression I'm an employee of either from that website.

As far as the legal disclaimers go I think they're pretty self-explanitory. Don't see anything amusing about them at all.

All they mean is quite simply Studio has permission and support from these companies. It isn't that hard to get the support really, both companies are willing to help out fan projects as much as they can, however getting permission for a few things took the better parts of Friday, Saturday and Monday. Still a few details to work out, mainly with Microsoft Game Studios (hense why they are not covered on the site yet) and possible release.

This isn't some 'paid' project, it isn't a professional level peice of work. It's just a fan mod, by a number of guys who wanted to work on something that would look good on thier portfolio with a theme they can all relate and enjoy.

No either you can keep giggling like a little girl over something I've personally worked hard over the last few days to make a reality which let me tell you almost every damn mod team right now doesn't even bother to get permission they just release and hope they don't get a C&D Order... So ya know forgive me for actually giving a damn that the hard work that this team will be putting into the project isn't just shut down on whim of the original developers.

To me THAT seems like an important factor.
Next time you feel like calling up companies, to ask for thier support and permission on things that are rarely let out to other companies for huge license fees... and actually get permission.

Well then you can make fun at my disclaimers. Until then maybe you should actually take the time and try asking for permission to use another companies IP and see how far you get.

Pisses me off that whenever I spend one hell of a lot of time and effort on something people around here just sit back and laugh at it. What you think somehow even getting dialogs open with these companies is a walk in the freaking park?!

Theres nothing wrong with giggling like a school girl, Megaton seems to love it, I used to but found cackling more enjoyable, and well people in the main part of cambridge seem to stare at you when you skip whilst giggling and waving your arms about, dunno why, guess not many people know what fun is....... I haven't even looked at your site, so I wouldn't know what to 'giggle' about, maybe I should look at the site, the mod my be worth looking at, most fan games I see aren't that original in the aspect of the game, too cliche, I know fan games are ment to be based around the game, but they're not usually that 'exciting'

As I said 'most'

[edit]

@Raven, no offense, but I think you take what a lot of people say too seriously

Half life is the first game i ever played, so I think half life anything is the bee's knee's with the exception of CS.

Doom 3 I played once because "OMGZ DAN J00 HAV TO PLAY DIS GAMEZ ITZ LIEK OMGZ SO COOL AN LIKE ALL THE GRAPHICS"

yeah.... so i played the game on a geforce 2 with a frame rate of about 1 to 5fps in the minotor section. Not advistable.
The whole game is played with your monitor switched off...

actually no.. its just theres no light in the levels...
well there are... theyre just not visible...

ok the lighting in the game sucked... you just knew that at every dark lit corner of the map there was a pre spawned zombie.

Making you jump out of your seat and for once play with the light switched on. Awesome.
Playability on anything other than an industry standard air conditioned graphics card... nil.

I don't like doom 3 because there's hardly any playability like on hl2.

imho ... **grins**

A lot of people write reviews comparing the general quality of games. Try being different, write a small essay about specific elements of the game and how they might be related to current world events or something like that.

I bought HL2 as soon as I could, after it hit store shelves. I have been wanting to play it ever since I heard the "rumors" of its extreme physics engine. I first played HL1 and enjoyed it very much.

However, I still haven't been able to enjoy HL2. This is because its minimum RAM requirements is 256MB, and I only have 128MB. Therefore, I am not able to run the game on my system. I pay bills and what-not. So, going out and just buying parts I need, is no quick and easy task. However, if I ever come around a good stash of change, enough to buy more RAM, I will give you my review on HL2.

And the first person to tell me "you're a retard it's apparent [game X] is so much better!!" or anything like it, can go shove their heads down a latrine or something. because i really dont want to hear it, this is my honest opionions on both games."

Posting a review here is hardly cause for such hissing fits - please folks just chill out and maybe threads like this will have a chance of becomming more interesting.

Personally I flew through the last quarter of Doom3 because I wanted to get it out of the way so I did'nt have to play it anymore, got real sick of spawning enemies, visibly spawning enemies should have been left in the DOS era.

I flew through HL2 because I really enjoyed it. The best FPS games are the ones where you can be clever, like you can hide and use your brain to get through a difficult section unscathed - this does'nt exist in Doom3 because the enemies have all the intelligence of a dead housefly - in HL2 your just far less restricted. I think that HL2 reminded me a lot of Res Evil 4, hopefully this is the new style of game engine that we'll see more of, like highly detailed and natural looking environments instead of that dark 80's sci-fi look that Doom3 reeks of.

I love Halo1/2, completed Halo umpteen times in co-op mode with just about anyone who'd entertain me . I must say I prefer the original Halo to the sequel, but really as long as it's a co-op splitscreen FPS I'll buy it (completed pretty much every FPS on XBox).

In halo the enemies are waiting for you, or they drop in, spawn somewhere and head towards you - that's how it should be done, you should never see an enemy appear in front of you as if by magic. ID might have made it so the plot allows for this spawning, but it does'nt hide the fact that it's a lame-ass cop out. IMO the jump out attacks in HL2 were far scarier, probably because it's more realistic than a load of effects and racket suddenly appearing behind you for no good reason.

It's really not rocket science to make enemies only spawn when out of the players view, and for that matter disapear when dead. FFS you can do it with 1 command in DBPro!.

Damn, I did'nt mean to rant!.

Ok now THAT is your own fault, not mine. Firstly, it does not say anywhere on your website that you are making a mod. I click the link and see a blank website with no introduction of any kind. Forgive me if your website is just not yet completed, but you should have thought of saying that BEFORE you jumped at me, because I honestly have no clue what it was about.

EDIT: This inspired me to write a review of my own...look for it in General.

According to you, it is:

Quote: "It isn't that hard to get the support really, both companies are willing to help out fan projects as much as they can"

Seriously though, don't get so worked up over nothing.
Yes, because a Dialog and Support are obviously have the same meaning right?

If I wanted to get support from say TGC for something that, is relatively simply. I could just contact them and ask them if they would be able to provide help. Either they say yes, or they say no.

In any-case that is simple.

To open up a dialog with a company is a different matter. It means not only getting more of thier attention than a passing interesting but also to get them to provide something more than support.

A good example would be contacting TGC out of the blue and saying that you would need the new Physics Plugin; you would need the Beta in order to work on a new project.

How likely do you think it is they would just hand out the Beta to anyone? That is the point in opening up a dialog with them. You would actually be talking to them and trying to barder a deal rather than simply asking for something that they would provide most people anyways.

Why? I don't know many other Mod sites that have on the front page.
THIS IS A MOD!

Hell if you didn't figure that out from the name, the site associations at the top, then surely it wouldn't been clear from the disclaimer at the bottom you were giggling about.

I didn't think I had to put up in big bold letters that it was a mod.

You know Raven maybe it's your habit of hijacking other peoples' threads to bitch and moan about your own issues that makes everyone think you're a complete fraud.

Or maybe it's the fact that no project you have ever supposedly worked on has been anything more than poorly constructed smoke and mirrors.

Yeah. I think it's that.

It's also kind of amusing your site is supposedly copyrighted by Liandri Limited when said company doesn't exist. And that you set the whole thing up to make it look like you're working with Valve and Rare when neither one have ever heard of you before.

Megaton said the whole site, not to be picky, but a mod site would say it somewhere, and I personally didn't find anything to imply anything is a mod, not even the logos at the top with valve and half life 2 at the top wouldn't imply it.

Company No. 5427478: That is the registration number of Liandri Limited.

And I suppose you have proof from both companies that this is the case. If so I'd suggest you post it up! I would be very interested in seeing that.

Why?
Sin Episodes doesn't make a note that it's a Modification game either, but it is.

Most of the Mod sites will note in the blurb to the project (on the about section). Right now the project has no blurb or about section. Again this isn't uncommon for a newly started project.

Previously I have contacted Westwood, who you claimed to be working with, and then denied ever knowing you at all. A friend of mine contacted nVidia once about your claims of working with them on shader design and they confirmed you were lying. Every other attempt at masquerading as an employee for any respectable company - ATi, Valve, Microsoft, etc - has been proven to be crap. In this particular instance I didn't even feel I needed proof. However since you urge I have sent letters off to both Rare and Valve asking if they are cooperating with you on any level and if you have permission to use their content on your website. I look forward to the responses (and your resulting excuses).

Similarly if you provide an actual legitimate tool to look up a company number I'll believe it's real, but I cannot find any way to verify it, so I'm not buying it.

Ian - You actually spent time in contacting these companies to find out if Raven worked for them? How much free time do you have? Seriously--- some people need new hobbies.

And another thing. I'm not pretending I know the truth or anything, but if you phoned up any old EA branch and asked them if they've heard of me, odds are you'll get a big fat NO. Even if I work right there. There's a reason why game companies list all programmers and all artists in the same Programmer and Artist category in the credits. Ever wondered why? They don't want to entertain headhunters for obvious reasons.

Damn. I need a coffee now.

dj blackdragon3710 shut up.

In this thread, i think Raven is the only one who hasn't done anything wrong. EVERYONE else hijacked this think, and Raven pretty much just took it and defended himself. If he lied, that's his own business.

May I have this thread locked if it doesnt shape up in the next 3 or 4 posts please? Honestly, even the mods need a freaking n00b slap from some things they've said. This place is freaking ridiculous, ran by a bunch of morons, all of you need to grow up and learn how to treat people.

And you people think it's the newbies who hijack this place. From what i've noticed, it's the oldbies who cause most of the damage.

Raven- Isn't Liandri covered by a Epic Games copyright or something? Then again, I don't think you can copyright something such as the name Liandri, probably only the concept of the liandri. Bah....

Yes Half-Life was a combination of code of Quake, Quake 2 and internal source. In-fact much of Source still retains quite a fair bit of the original source code and design.

Quite interesting the history of both games code-wise.
I look forward to seeing if Valve eventually release the Half-Life source code like iD have done with Quake 2.

Personally I've felt both Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 are over-hyped. I wasn't disappointed with both, however I do look forward to seeing what the modification communities come up with. Often this is what excites me more about these games now. Not the base game but the cool mods that come out.

Personally my favourites over the years have been,
Sidrial (Quake3), Malice (Quake) and Counter-Strike (HL)

Eclipse (Source) is by far one of the most interesting mods i've seen in a long time.

So it's not so much what the original games are like. I mean personally on thier own I see the base games like the previous games. They're not shooting to be something ground-breaking.

Doom 3 provides an atmosphere through graphics.
Half-Life provides an interactive feel through physics.

Both games are awesome in one area and lack in others. In the end both are enjoyable to play in the right atmosphere. The mods will always keep the games popular thouhg.

As far as I understand it Liandri is just a (TM) which means it's not a registered trademark it's just something associated. I'm not to up to date on the laws surrounding using invented words.

All I know is I was going to register Raven / Studio but then found several art studios with the same name, also was a little ichy about if it would be a valid name with Raven Software. So what I did was I registered a company name that popped into my head at the time that sounded cool, then registered the studio name as a registered trademark.

That way I can use either and hopefully not get in trouble. Personally doubt any company is going to really care much, as never really going to end up in the same league as them. Company wasn't setup to compete, just a way for me to claim tax back on computer hardware/software.

Oh yeah, and I agree with your review, Joel Half-Life 2 was better, in my opinion, than Doom 3, in an overall sense. But it is difficult to compare the two.

It's like comparing Scream 3 with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They're geared towards different audience types.

Have you looked at thier site?
They have 4 news items (3 of which were added in the last 7 days yet the site has been up for a month)

A Media Section with 'comming soon'

And a Download Section with 2 Wallpapers.

I have the Homepage, Update News (with 1 item) and a Links Section.

Really we have almost identical amounts of content so far. I'm working on getting quite a bit more up within the next few days. Actually waiting to see what Kentaree is comming up with on that front because I'm not sure to work on the User-System myself or wait for his.

Probably change the contact page tonight (planned to do that last night only I had to go out somewhere last minute), thinking about sorting out the main page with a news-item thing; but then that might be better to tie in with the User-System.

The plan is to have 3 levels of user type right now.
Guest : They get the most basic overview of stuff.
User : Registered User, they get a bit more information. Some more media downloads special to them. Etc.
Press / Sponsor : Artwork only available for them, exclusive content updates, exclusive information, etc.

The idea is to try and get people to atleast register so we know how many people are interested. Also provide a bit of incentive for people to help us out fiancially as some of the members are working on this will need to devote time from thier Freelance work, as such having some sort of basic income should really help free some of the guys from thier real-world commitments a bit more.

Hopefully it's a good idea, but we'll see.
