Imagine a room with absolutely no ambient light and the player holding a torch, moving around - how do I achieve this in DBP?

For complete darkness set ambient light to 0 and hide light 0. Then make a new light for the players torch. I think it should be a point light by default when you create a new one. You could also use light 0 for the torch but it's better to leave it in case you want to turn it back on.

Oh if it's a modern torch you should probably use a spot light instead and it's probably best to leave ambient at a low value instead of 0.

that's just what i wanted, mucho gracias

however - i put a single point light above and central to my world (10 models loaded into a central scene) and they light up in varying degrees from completely unilluminated to burnt out bright!

i'm running DBPro with patch 3.1 on a 1.7 with 1 gig RAM and a geforce3 - any clues to a nice even lighting scene?

I believe a scene lights better with more polys, but of course runs slower. Can you take a screenshot to show us what you mean?
