Okay I have a question and I am not that patient. So anyway can anyone tell me is it possible to buy a server and attach a couple of monitors to it so that I can be on the computer and so can someone else using a different monitor. Is something like this possible? If it is where and for how much can I buy a server like this? And for how much? If it is not possible is there anything I can do to avoid buying a new compuer so I can be on it at the same time someone else is.

To answer your question of if it's possible: yes.
To explain how: i don't know. Probably some sort of internal network or some shiz needs to be setup. I have seen it done(at my current school), so may google has some words of advice?

Buying a server isnt cheap unless you just build a nice little machine that does one thing and only one thing...serve.....so doing this you could just build your own with a nice AMD chip ( i preferr AMD) and a nice little 200gb HD

Now, onto the rest of your question. I have done this with my computers before. If you want to beable to have people login to your server via some protocol all you have to do is set up a FTP server. FTP servers are just down uploading/downloading stuff off a remote machine you can find software for this at

Or if your talkin bout them being able to see the computers desktop then set up netmeeting it will allow remote machines to login and see as well as download/upload/move things on the desktop so say you have a max payne desktop wall paper they will beable to view your desktop in 'real time' and see everything you would see as if they where there. Now if you wanted to set up a server just for your personal use. Say your at your grandma's house and you wanted to download some stuff off your server at home for your grammy.

Well to use netmeeting you'd have to have it constantly on if you hsut it off no link will be made. but there is other things you can do to. Those are just 2 options FTP servers and netmeeting.

if you had two monitors, it still would be processing the same mouse movements and keystrokes, therefor, you would be fighting for the mouse

you COULD, however, is do as they say, and just use it across the network/web (ftp)

With netmeeting that is true =) if someone logs into your comp you cannot use your mosue LOL or your keyboard you could really mess with em but if its on a server that probably won't have the mosue in use at the time they do it i dought it'd matter.....

BUT

if you want to you could get a KVM switch it will allow you to use the same monitor keyboard and mouse for 2 computers via hot keys you can switch between both computers. No problem. But i'd go to tigerdirect.com to get the best prices on them.

Ok you couold set up a server yourself, you would need a couple of things.

A Server (Such As A cisco 2000 )
A Monitor
A Keyboard
A Mouse
A OS To SetUp Such As RedHatLinux
A ADSL Line/Cables To Output Over To The Web

But it doesn't end their, you also require quite a few more things.

I was also going to setup my own server, untill I relieased I could setup my own Virtual Server, on my laptop.

So instead of paying a huge amount for a server I did this.

A Laptop
A Software To Setup Virtual Server
A 2Meg BroadBand Connection

you cant do that...you have to have two computers, because the mouse and keyboard are being processed by the same computer, and so if you move the mouse on one 'screen' it's going to be moved on the other.

so the answer to your question is NO, you cannot do that without two computers.

Yeah, of course it's possible. Duct tape two PCs together, you KNOB.

Here's what's really possible:

One machine acts as server, this possibly might be this "main frame" you keep talking about. Then you and your friend connect to it remotely using your own separate machines. This is possible.

Not possible:

One machine, with one motherboard, that two people use, physically, at the same time, with 2 sets of peripherals (keyboards, mice, speakers, video), running two different sessions.

So maybe you just need to better explain to us what you're trying to do.

That's why I said mainframe. A mainframe is a computer with a special motherboard that can connect a whole ton of things together. I'm just not sure whether you can hook up 2 monitors. Go to ebay and look up mainframe computers and it will show what they are. So what you said was not possible may be possible with a mainframe.

Anyway, why do you both need to work on the same computer? Can't you just email your work to each other? Unless of course you both want to use a program you only have one licence for....

Its probably cheaper to buy a couple of PC's than the mither of a server to be honest, But its up to you, imho, I dont think you need a server.

Also you will get more power with seperate PC's (Well I would have thought so anyway)

Your original question was if this is possible. Several people have told you no. Including me. Even if it IS possible, it'd be impractical and expensive. @Data: I think you have misunderstood what a server is/ is for, here:

Try reading up on the subject because from the sound of your posts you dont quite understand the subject. When using a server you use different computer(s) to connect to it, the point of a server is to share data/applications across multiple clients (computers) not to connect several monitors to the same computer.

The short answer is that it is possible.

The long answer is that it depends on what OS you are talking about.

With a specialized mainframe as you refer to, you will be running a special OS and non graphical apps and have to write the programs yourself. These mainframes can be had for as little as a few hundred punds and are usually 5-15 years old. They run obscure variations of unix, won't work with your PC peripherals and need maintainence skills and spares which are expensive.

If you wish to stay in Windowsland, your only solution is to use terminal services on a Windows server. This will require a server running Windows server, a couple of terminals(small pc's built solely to display a picture on a screen) with a screen each.

This solution is designed to run apps over network, but not to play games.

ok to solve this riddle.

get your parents to rent the computers, it will be about $20 per week for each one (Australian Price there, your country might be cheaper ) and this way when it gets slow you can upgrade the whole lot depending on your contract with the rental company, or rent try buy where you slowly pay it off over time,its a 100% tax deduction going either way.

the alternative is to study hard about all the computer parts and try and put it together yourself as cheap as possible you will realise how silly some statements above are.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

If its not, I'd like to say this: First off, YOU would not be able to pull it off. If you got some computer experts with welding guns and like alot of pepsi, they might be able to do it. Either way, it would be very expensive. Buy 2 computers, or buy 1 and share it. Or, do what I did and buy your computer part-by-part as you get the money, but judging from the posts you've made, you dont know how to put together a computer.

Take a gander at http://www.applica.com/product_app_u2lite.shtml as one example. Allows an extra mouse, keyboard an monitor to connect to your pc running a completely seperate desktop. Just what you are after. They do other products aswell that do similar things. Even 5 different users at same time. There is even a multimedia version so each user has can have own speakers and sound.

did you look at the price?
for the speed your computer will be running per desktop, it would be better to just BUY a computer from DELL and get a monitor with it

monitor for $100 + that thing for $150 = $250 + $10 for keyboard + $5 for a mouse = $265, you can get DECIENT computers for that price...all we were trying to do, is tell him that it would be BETTER to go off and buy more computers. because for that you're going to need a nice computer ($700-$900 system at least)

think about what you're getting before you buy it Data, and do the simple math first...if it isnt too hard (ebay has some calculators to do the math for you if you want.)

I'm not so sure if your right Joel the computer I have now is pretty fast so the others will probably be going at okay speeds. And also it probably depends where you live but a decent computer here is like $700.

a NICE computer will go for about $700, that would be a computer with a nice processor, 512m-1g ram, and a nice graphics card
