Student sells pixels on his website for $1 a pixel.

http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com

Thought this would never take off but he has already earnt $8000 - how jammy can you get. Gets paid for doing virtually nothing.

He seems to have got lots of press attention aswell which I suppose helped a lot.

One day I WILL think of a way of making easy money...

Boo!

Each pixel contains a link though. A lot of people will pay for links especially if it's a popular page or is likely to become one. It's a stupid site though so it is jammy if he's made 8000 from it

Some people spent 900 dollars for 900 pixels. Which in my opinion is no better than buying 1 as it's still only one link and when the page fills up it will be unreadable.

Damn it. Just hate it when people come up with clever, easy, cheap to run schemes that rake in the money. Ebay is a class example. As is the online poker efforts where people pay other people for winning directly (and the site keeps a commission - no prize money or nout to pay out). And now this guy. May not be the most brilliant idea on earth, but if he has already made $8000 from it, then well done. Gotta hate truly gifted "idea" people. Gits....

Cheers

It IS $1/pixel. Those are not 1x1 pixel blocks, they are 10x10 pixels...so that means its $100 for 100 pixels.

I think a good way would be to buy mispelled versions of famous sites--- i.e. realarcad.com (instead of realarcade.com). Then stick a whole bunch of pay-per-click ads on there. A domain name is what, $5? If you make at least $5 then you don't lose a thing.

no, they bought it, the guy was a lawyer , they paid him about eight million iirc, think about it, if you where fox you wouldn`t want him to sell it to a hardcore porn film maker, lots of people would think they where at the back of it or something, it could do them a lot of harm (and they could probably offset the cost against tax anyway), they still use twentieth century fox though, they just didn`t want anyone else using the name I guess, if I was on the board someone in the commerce dept would be looking for a new job after that though.

Unfortunately, thats illegal. When you buy a domain name you have to aggree that you are not usingsomeone else's brand name, trademark, copyright or whatever OR something which could be mistaken for it. A lot of people have had to volentarily hand over their domain names, sometimes entirely by accident. On the other hand many other people get away with it for years, its only if the other company complains that anything is done about it.

A more legitimate approach is to buy a book on Organic SEO, buy a domain like www.get-stuff-cheap.com and then spend a long time with apache's mod-rewrite.

With a lot of work, you can make a site which ranks highly without you spending a penny. When you're there you use affiliate marketing with people who actually sell goods (like amazon) and they'll give you a cut if people end up buying something. A friend of mine where I used to work made around £5,000 in one year - nice little earner. Unfortunately, SEM (not SEO) is big business now, so you're less likely to get in the top results for "bread and butter" search phrases.

It's not really a con; people get what they pay for. Nothing about it is misleading.

I actually visited some of the websites on that page and I'm considering buying some pixels!

But for the same price you could get a load more clicks using google, or programes that add you to search enginers.

Personally word of mouth is the best way here, only you would need to start by posting on forums, not in a spamming way.

Don't start throwing papers out, if someone wants to find you, they will.

Well, I think it's a top-notch idea. No one's been conned, they knew what they were doing and weren't being misled in any way. If they choose to pay then that's there decision and what's wrong with people having a bit of fun with their money.

Drew--- have you looked at their website statistics? Do you even know how many page views they get? No use shelling out $100 or more if the site gets a measly thousand views a month.
