As some of you may (or may not) know, I tried to do a mappy reading routine about a year or so ago, with limited success (the sticking point being the graphics part). And the fact there is little decent documentation for it.

Anyhoo, I've brought the Mappy reading system back - this time in the form of a class.

It'll be on my web site soon-ish (from the limited testing I've done so far, it works very well).

At the moment several things need dealing with :

A) Loading in the graphics - what I'll probably do is just load them into allocated menory and let the user deal with it
B) Blocks animations (which order does it all go???)
C) Some extra functions - Add/remove layers on the fly, as well as duplicate each layer, and allow access to the block information

This mappy tool only allows you to do 2D stuff, right? I mean, the isometric is treated just like a funky/extruded 2D map, no?

Mappy can be used for 3D stuff too - hence the reason I'm using it.

umm. Could someone explain what a mappy is? I´ve had a look on google but I didn´t find anything. I guess it´s a way of handling terrains but I don´t know what for.(ai,collision,LOD, etc)

Ah. So it´s a program. Now I see and I was thinking it was some kind of format. I can´t see how you´re getting it to do 3d though unless you´ve altered the source.

Its quite simple - each tile represents an X & Z size - just plot a cube at a fixed position in those two directions.

I had a look at Mappy again... and while it is a cool tool, the Iso mode does seem to be a last-minute hack. Unless I am missing something glaringly obvious (huh?) you really can only produce a 2D map with occlusion... and you cannot directly connect the 2d sprites you provide for the editor's preview/painting and 3d "blocks" ingame. Only 2D blocks, isn't it? It only helps you with Z-order of drawing, not really at producing 3D... ?

Still, a lovely free tool.

I use it quite alright in 3D - horizontal positioning is reversed, but thats about it.

I've included an example executable (it was part of game I was going to do).

Its very useful for both 2D & 3D stuff - which the Mappy class should help with
