A revelation!

I've been getting frame rates of around 19fps to 25fps with my current project. Which has been, okay to so-so. Then I tried changing the "Display Settings" in the Project Manager from it's default "Windowed - Full Screen" to "Fullscreen Exclusive Mode" ...Suddenly my game runs at 80fps to 90fps!!!

I was expecting this kind of increase with Patch 4... and there it was, sitting under my nose the whole time. I haven't found anything in the manual about this, and so suspect I'm not the only one to have missed it.

When you change settings in the Project Manager, be sure to click on the "Save All" Button (ctrl + shift + S). Otherwise, your changes to settings will be lost. Also, you may need to change the color depth to True Color (mine will crash with 16bit color).

Another way to get to exclusive mode is with the following command:
SET WINDOW OFF

I've since recompiled all the demos that came with DBpro and found them all to be massively improved. All but the LotsOf3D demo--that one'll have to wait for Patch 4.

I suspect that this issue will apply only to certain graphics cards. Mine is the Matrox G400.

Have fun!

Well I get this improvements too. I found out the first day i used DBPro.

I found this in the help files -> getting started -> migrating from db v1

"Desktop Full screen Standard

The default running mode for all Dark Basic Professional programs is FULLSCREEN DESKTOP. This means the
application runs in windows mode stretched to the size of the desktop. This is a preferred method of
rendering with modern hardware and WindowsXP. Your framerates are faster and you have full
cross-application ability throughout the execution of your program. You still have the option for full screen
exclusive mode, as well as hidden mode, standard window mode and a special fullscreen desktop mode
which retains the taskbar in case you are writing a tool rather than an a game which ideally plays into the
entire screen. Be aware some older cards incur a performance penalty when running in full screen desktop
mode

8) WOW ... that fixed my jerky camera problems something quick! Thanks for the info, anyone know if complications will arise from using this option?

Well, I figured this would probably be old news to some--and to those I apologize for the false hopes. I was really stunned to have discovered this, and pleased to find my announcement has already solved some other people's troubles.

What a shame we can't rely on one aproach for the fastest results! Nevermind. This is certainly one for the OPTIONS panel of any game made for distribution. Whether you've got a new whizzy card yourself or not.

When patch 4 comes out we are told that a program running at 20fps will increase and perform at 300 fps. Slightly better than 80 - 90fps.

That is meant to be good news and not sarcasm, or he like!

BTW, for more speed, use fastsync and always use boxes as the collision type for objects if possible.

you know if you keep the program windowed but just turn off fullscreen it actually increases quite a bit ... but i'll let you figure that one out.

(its alot faster than fullscreened)
