YAY!

Wow, this game looks GREAT.
When I see the power of DBP, I begin
wondering if I should buy it.
I mean, I must buy it!

I´m looking forward to the release of your game, Scraggle!!!

you know, this seems to be exactly the kind of game i like
(besides turn-based strategy):
mostly action, with some interesting choices to make (your shop).
looking forward to it very much. (but disapointed about lack of demo,
and i feel your pain as far as time of GUI programming...)

I think that there is little chance of getting this finished by the end of the year There is far too much family 'stuff' going on this time of year.

Instead, I will try and knock up a demo. I will hopefully be able to get that up tomorrow, although Mrs Scraggle wants to put up the Xmas tree tomorrow so I might be fighting for free time.

Either way, watch this space, the demo is coming!

The demo is ready

but it is 15Mb, too big to upload here
and I only have a freewebs website ... it means that only 2 or 3 people could download it and even then it would be very slow!

So ... anyone recommend a file hosting site?

Thanks

[Edit] I could still do with the info but Benjamin has told me how to break down a RAR file into smaller chunks. So, here is part 1 of the Roughnecks Demo

And here is part 2 ....

When you have downloaded both parts, highlight both RAR files, right click and select extract here and it will re-assemble it into one EXE

The demo is just one level (Level 6 I think). I have equipped your ship with a few extras. you have:

Indigo Plasma weapon.
Olympus Engine (level 2)
Stabalising Winglets (level 2)
Reverse Thrust
Lateral Thrust
3 x Super Spinner Weapon
5 x Homing Missile
6 x Power Missile
Radiation Proofing on the Cargo Hold
HyperSpace Generator Fitted

Controls
Left arrow key - Turn Left
Right arrow key - Turn Right
Up Key - Thrust
Down Key - Reverse Thrust/Brake
Z - Lateral Thrust Left
X - Lateral Thrust Right
Right Shift - HyperSpace

Space Bar - Fire Standard Weapon
Left Shift - Next Special Weapon
Left CTRL - Previous Special Weapon
\ - Fire Special Weapon (that's a forward slash ... I'm not sure if it will show here)
C - Shields

Page Up - Next Item in Cargo Hold
Page Down - Previous Item in Cargo Hold
Right Alt - Teleport Item Into Cargo Hold
Right CTRL - Eject From Cargo Hold

I know the keys choice is a bit crappy but it will be fully customizable later aswell as joystick support.

Don't try using your shields against Radioactive rocks - it just won't work. That is an intentional feature, not a bug

There is no options screen in the demo and you won't go to the shop between levels. When you complete the level you will just start over again.
When you explode, you will be caught in an endless loop of exploding until you hit the escape key. Obviously that is only a quirk in the demo and doesn't happen in the full game.

The explosion animation is temporary, I don't like the one that I am using now, so it will change before the final release.

I am aware of a few things that I could do to optimize the code a little to get it running faster. So, if you do find it running slowly, the chances are it will be faster with the final release.

At the moment you are able to teleport volcanic rock into the cargo hold but that will destroy your ship in the final release.

When you run the game there will be a progress bar as the game loads in the graphics. When it is complete, The game appears to 'hang'. Again, this is only temporary, just click the mouse and away you go.

Other than that ... enjoy

This is very odd!

Benjamin downloaded it and it worked no problem for him. It also works fine for me on both my desktop and laptop machines. But the thing that is REALLY odd is that line 832 is this:

No attempt to load any kind of file at all!

How queer!

No, but didn't they say that the .exe s are supposed to run on any computer(that has a good graphics card, Directx, good amount of RAM) without DBP?

That's a point, memory limitations can cause a file to not load, and and if I remember correctly it comes up with a similar error to the one appearing for some right now. It might be useful for you guys to post your specs..

Is there any memblock image manipulation? That might cause problems in the wrong display mode.

There is no memblock stuff at all.
It is in 32bit display mode within the code.
Yes, there are non-square textures but that shouldn't make a difference unless your graphics card is steam powered.

So, I'm out of ideas. It works for some people but not for others and I just don't know why, sorry

what's a "non-square texture" ?
is it just a jpg/bmp/png with some black for the background,
or is it something else? is it possible to have something not square in a computer?

my graphics card is an integrated one, so it's never FAST, but it
has never been unable to run a dbp app by anyone.
2.8ghz Celeron, 256mb ram...cheap computer but it works.

Uh...to help, here's my specs:
windows xp
Celeron CPU 2.40GHz
2.39GHz, 512 MB of RAM
Intel 82865G Graphics controller(I think this is the graphics chip thing. I don't know much about this stuff)

Quote: "what's a "non-square texture" ?"

It's a texture that isn't square
I have some in there that are 160 x 120 and all the backdrops are 1024 x 768. Very old graphics cards wouldn't work unless the texture were square or more specifically ... to the power 2. So, 128 x 128 or 256 x 256 etc. But now there shouldn't be any problem.

Quote: "it has never been unable to run a dbp app by anyone."

If you have NEVER been able to run a dbp app then I think maybe you really should think about upgrading.

hey scraggle... once one of my programs wouldn't run on some while it would run on others, and the problem was that while i was doing image manipulation with memblocks i did something like this:

instead of this:

(when using the point command the color black is only 0 on some graphics cards...you have to use rgbr, rgbg, and rgbb to get the actual color)

i know it's a really long shot... but there's a tiny chance that might be the problem if you use memblock image manipulation
(there aren't many bugs that pick and choose like this...)

[edit] oh.. i guess the texture thing could do it to lol

scraggle, i said it has never been UN-able...
(meaning has always been able...)
i wouldn't have been programming in dbp for 2 years if i couldn't compile...

and ok, non-square, i was thinking something more exotic,
trying to imagine a kind of image format that was not rectangular.

seems we both misunderstood eachother a little.

I will be working on 'squareing' all the textures today and knock up another demo using them. It won't be online until tomorrow night though because it is works Christmas Party tonight starting at lunch time today with lots of free beer

Update done!

The Christmas Party is over already and I am still sober enough to post (I think!)

I had another quiet day at work so I was able to 'square' all the textures and made them much smaller aswell. There is very little noticable difference either ... which is good The loading screen is noticably crap but as that is only temporary for the demo, it really doesn't matter.
The asteroids textures have been shrunk from 640x480 to 64x64 and you can hardly tell. I can see the difference but only because I have been looking at them for the last two months. I think they will be fine for the untrained eye. Also the backdrops were 1024x768, now they are 512x512 and are re-sized in game, slightly reducing the quality but if it means more people can play the game then it is a trade off worth taking.
The major plus point to all this is that I think I have attacked the possible problems on a two pronged frontier.
1) The textures are now all square.
2) The texures now use up far less memory.

So, if either of these two problems are what is causing the errors, then hopwfully, I have got it cracked!

Also, another major advantage is that now the file has been reduced from 15Mb to 5Mb so I can upload it here

Sadly I can't do it now because I left my laptop at work and it has the updated files on it. I don;t have net connection at work. So, it will have to wait until I get home tomorrow, in about 17 hours!

Ok, here it is ...
If you tried it and it didn't work then please try this version and let me know how it goes. I am hoping that it will now work (for the reasons mentioned above).

If you haven't tried it yet then please have a go. It is a third of the size now, so, there's no excuse

WOW! I'm impressed! You've done a really good work Sgraggle! It works good for me (just noticed a bug after my ship have collided an asteroid and is never ending exploding!). I also think you can improve the engines blue flame, but like I said it's a fantastic work!

Are you using timer() based movement? Maybe the error that other users gets come from here, if you've used a changing texture on an object. Just trying to help...

[edit] My specs P2.4Mhz, ATI Radeon 9000, 256Mo Windows XP. Running at 25 fps.

That's not actually a bug, it is just a quirk with the demo. I mentioned it in one of my previous posts:

Did you select one first using the left shift or left ctrl?

So, it least we know now that it works for you. So, It must have been one or both of the texture problems.

Yeah, I think it is the non-square image files. I still can't imagine any of those types of files.

Yes. So are you supposed to press the / button after?
