Hi there

I'm sure many of you have already downloaded the New Generation of Smileys (with sound).

I was wondering, more over, hoping that the TGC Forums could inco-operate them. I think many people out there will agree (of course, those with 56K should still be able to stick to the old picture smileys with an option on there profiles).

Apologies if this post sounds a little too off-subject and demanding.

What does everyone think?

P.S. I love this smiley and this and this and this and ....

Well...it's not the smileys that count...it's what's inside the forum that counts. And I'm 56k right now...

With sound smilies I couldn't listen to my Billy Joel while I surfed. I would have to shoot somebody.

the smilies in this forum are perfectly adaquate! I can think of a lot of things Rich could spend his time on that would benifit the community more than a new set of similies.

And with sound? What plannet are you from? Verbal Smilies are one of the first things I disable if I can, and one of the top things that give people on my MSN list a 1 hour block!

I disagree. The old dbspot.com smileys totally PWN the tgc smileys.

I agree with all the people who said sound is a bad idea. All the smileys with sound tend to bog down my already bogged down computer, and it's really irritating to open a link and all of a sudden have a wave of annoying sound hit your ears while you are trying to listen to good music

Agreed, sound-making smileys are a bad idea. Plus, with dozens of posts on each thread, as soon as the page loads, all the smiley's would chime in at once, having the effect of a large mob of noisy smileys all talking at once.

Sorry for the misunderstanding

I meant, those new generation smileys that are ANIMATED - you know them don't you?

I was just trying to refresh the memories of those who had gotten them so long ago and now forgot about them and also trying to give a reference as to what I was talking about. That is why I mentioned "with sound".

Quote: "Agreed, sound-making smileys are a bad idea. Plus, with dozens of posts on each thread, as soon as the page loads, all the smiley's would chime in at once, having the effect of a large mob of noisy smileys all talking at once."

But if the sound was activated when the mouse passed OVER the smiley ONLY - wouldn't that be okay?

Thanks very much for all your opinions guys - appreciate it

I was just pitchin in ideas about how to improve the format of the forums (of course, it's just great the way it is right now ). I just loved those cute little smileys screaming "hello" and "what are you looking at"

But regarding those new generation smileys. How exactly do they work?! I tried downloading and installing them but I can't use them - everytime I do I need to connect to the internet - what's the deal.

Thanks again

Then why, oh why, would you ask them to add new and annoying smilies that would make me never want to show my face here again?

AIM already started using animated, sound icons. It's very annoying. I'm about to tell all my friends to either switch messenging programs, and say goodbye to me. ICQ was great, until AOL bought them and added adverts. Also, I never got spam like this on ICQ until then too.

I don't use AIM or ICQ but I know I always hated AIM. Yahoo now has animated smileys they call Audibles, and I disabled those quickly...Otherwise some of my friends who are [jerks] would constantly send them to me, and in turn also bog down my computer.

I actually prefer the ascii version of smilies. The simple : ) and : ( and even the ; ) are good enough for me.

Smilies get disabled in Messenger as the first thing I do on a new install. The ones here are tolerable, but make them any bigger, or animated, and I'll probably claw my own eyes out.

Annoying, eye-drawing, attention-begging blobs of yellow to me don't add anything to a post. I will not respect or understand, or even be amused more by a post with big moving smilies than I would with normal smilies (which I use as a 'tonal' addition to a non-verbal communication) and text.

But for those of us that don´t see the world in code form the picture ones are much more colourful and clearer.

My signature has been erased by me because it's LARGE.

Even when all the data was erased and I started with 2 new fresh hard disks (I mean *ALL* of the data) does that not remove it? It even erased the 30-day trial I had on DB Pro.

My bad. I though that this one meant "evil laugh" or something so I prefered this

Anyway, now completely off topic - I'm having a problem with mail back. It doesn't work for me though it used to before. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong (by the way, I have no spam filters or anything and my settings are correct). I posted a thread before but couldn't solve the problem

Thanks

I think these forums lack a big cheesy grin smily. IE something like

is half way

is just annoying

looks like you're finding something funny.

atm best match is although a cheesy grin could be nice.

I think the funniest smiley is . The open eyes make it look hilarious.

Anyways, those "New generation of smileys" are in popup ads, and once I saw them I wanted to shoot myself in the eye. They're so big and obnoxious, and Flash! Honestly, who needs flash for a freakin smiley face.

That is a great cheesy grin Moderator David T - what's the symbol for that one?

I just realised something - try this: select this line of text upto and including this smiley and then quickly unselect it - it looks like it's 'smiling' and then 'not smiling'

EDIT: Hello Mr. Lukas W - what is that banner about anti-noob?

It's good to hear that there are some girl coders too - but I am not surprised - my friend Janet is a fellow coder and a damn fine one too. Happy coding Ms. Soapyfish

It's just a shame that many take for granted the fact that we humans, of all genders and races are still 1 species - not a multitude but a single entity.
