I haven't tried to texture characters yet; however I can tell you that a texture for one character probably won't work on a seperate model because of UV Coordinates. In other words the polys are set up in a different configuration for each model. Think of the UV map as a skin (and the texture would be the clothes), you can't take the skin off of one person and expect it to fit perfectly on another person.
You can however tweek the UV map (the skin) to fit into the texture (the clothes) if it is close enough, but that would take some time to explain.
So the answer to your question would be no...mostly.
