OK here are what I can't figure out:

1) alttexture. whenever I try to use it the texture just goes blank. I can't figure out how to alternate between the texture and the alttexture. There is much I could do if only I could get this to work. Could someone please show me a code example of how to do this?

2) bump.fx for segments. I've looked at the fps files and tried to do everything in there, but to no avail. They end up being black. What gives?

alttexture=0
alttexture=1

0 is false and means no alt texture so we use the texture
1 is true so we use the alt texture

I get that much, but when I do it it turns the entity white. No texture.

Did you define what the alt texture is in the entity proprities?

I'm pretty sure I know everything. Doubts are something rare in me and I am never wrong, as this signature can prove.

Check your spelling.

If its coming up white when you have everything set right, then its not finding the file.

Check your spelling of the path and file names carefully.

I don't know what else it could be if the file is not corrupted.

Don't forget to start with fresh .bin and .dbo files too.

Can we see that portion of your code to see how you have it scripted?
Nevermind, I'm sure you don't have a typo in your script.

What exactly is it, that is having its texture changed?
You said entity, but not a character right?

One thing that I thought: is that a test level or a compiled exe? Seems sometimes they produce diferent results.

Just wondering in thoughts...
