I am sorry to say this, but my program or others made with Dark Basic pro will not work with the new Direct X 9 and this has been tested on multiple machines. It crashes with an illegal operation with D3D8.DLL

the commands that are known to crash under DX9 under DBP 3.1 are:

INTERSECT OBJECT
SET REFLECTION SHADING ON

These have definately been fixed in Patch 4.

NOBODY has a forum name as stupid as Darth Shader. I do.

No my GFX card can handle it because with DX8 it worked...but when i installed DX 9 it comes up with that error with D3D8.dll. None of those commands I am using.

Does this happen to everybody?

My DBpro is coming in the mail soon and don't have Direct X 8. I was about to download 9 because it's newer, but then I saw this post.

Should I download 9 or just download 8.1?

Well actually I fixed the code...the command DELETE IMAGE is bugged in DX9 everything else pretty much works. Once again it's probably patched in patch 4. Go ahead and get DX 9 it's SOOOO GOOD.

Sounds like an OS re-install, especially if 8 AND 9 wont install...

Unless you can roll-back to some previous time of course.

None it just freezes. I have to press ctrl+alt+del a few times and just wait. Then a message pops up saying "This program is not responding. It may...". Also, does DB pro come with DX 8.1 or 9? I cant wait till it gets here because I cant use the demo.

Thanks

DBPro comes with 8. But if you can't get 8 working from Microsoft's site, then it probably wont work on DBPro's CD.

I think a Windows re-install is the only way. Alternatively, you could try removing your current graphics drivers (and re-install or use the default resolution), and then try.

How exactly would I do that? I don't remember installing one as I think it came with my computer. Where would it be located?

Also, I have WildTangent, which I think is similar to Direct X except not made by MS. Would this interfere with Direct X? When I had the Dark Basic Classic demo, I had no problem with my Direct X 8 (I have 8.0, not 8.1) with WildTangent on my Computer.

When I run dxdiag I can see 2 files missing. It tells me to install the next version, but I cannot do that. Very confusing. Imagine if I didn't know my computers better than the average person. I have just never done anything with Direct X before.

WildTangent wouldn't cause the problem - it uses DX7 for its graphics...

The graphics drivers would be located under Display Adapters in the System icon (in Control Panel). Removing these I dont think would make much difference...

If there are files missing and you cant re-install then then the only thing you could try is to locate a program that says it can uninstall DirectX. Some people say they work, and some dont...

I had a fealing they were there but I didn't want to search my whole computer. Wild Tangent uses DX 7? I didn't know that. On Microsoft.com, they say that DX cannot be uninstalled, but There has to be some way.
Thanks for your help.

If you've got 98/ME you could always try installing it in Safe mode.

I once tried a beta of DX 8... I seriously f*cked up my computer... Then one day I fell over a DX uninstaller... And yes it worked, but it's VERY hard for an average computer user to use (especially if he/she doesn't know how to remove the graphics drivers).
The DX uninstaller is NOT a microsoft product and therefore if it causes data loss or system crash, it's your own problem. I don't know the name or where I got this uninstaller. Try searching in a search engine (altavista or google).

Andrew, Here is what to do. Either you can go ahead and try and install it in safe-mode, which may or may not work because safemode loads in VGA and directx might need to play with your video adapter to install.

If that doesn't work, hit ctrl, alt delete->taskmanager, processes tab. start right clicking on all the non-system process (ie the ones that load under your name) and select delete process tree. Then look at the system process and kill any process that look as if they are being loaded by 3rd party programs.

On the flip side of that you can goto start>run and type in MSCONFIG and ok and then goto startup and just disable everything, reboot.. then try and install. After that re-enable everything.

Lastly and your final fix, would be use a registry cleanup tool. Such as, RegCleaner, which I believe is freeware now, or Norton Utilities WinDoctor.

I'm putting my money on the fact that you have another program running in memory that is causing some sort of conflict. Or a bad combo of programs that are causing a conflict.

If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll come up with a better solution

Finally I got it installed!!!

I closed all programs then installed. It still took about ten minutes to install and another ten to restart. That's pretty slow for my computer.

Thanks for all your help.

Well.. DX9 is not a small game or a painting program... It is a windows API... It does take at least 10 minutes to install on all computer configurations (except if you already have DX9 or can't install ).
