Read on slashdot, thought i'd share cause I found it pretty amusing:

http://news.com.com/Whats+the+buzz+Teens+cant+stand+it/2100-11395_3-5974937.html?tag=nefd.top

If it drives teens nuts, I wonder what it does to dogs...

That's ace

I was wandering around homebase just recently and I could barely stand to be in one particular isle because of the high pitched whine. I stood there with my hands on my ears while my bf professed to being unable to hear anything and shrugged at my usual bonkersness.

I can't walk into TV shops, also because of the whine, and I can identify a TV left on sleep mode with pretty unnerring accuracy from the sound.

Indeed, when I was in secondary school, in the physics class our teacher had a noise generator with the frequency on a dial - as she put the frequency up, people 'dropped out' of the hearing range. I was one of the last left - but some dropped out remarkably quickly, not long after our teacher.

And I'm definitely past 'teenager' now

It's an ace idea - but unfortunately I hope the sound doesn't go all the way into the shop, or people like myself (professional with a home to run) will be put off shopping there.

I wonder how clubbing (and the massive volumes there) will affect young people's hearing in the higher frequencies?

Good question; I have a cousin who is into rock music etc.. in a much bigger way than I am, and has attended over a hundred concerts and is in a band himself. He's 18 and he's really starting to go deaf apparently. You often have to repeat things to him and he complains of having a constant 'ring' in his ears, which you get sometimes after a disco etc..

What about teens who sincerely want to shop there? And then people like tinkergirl who can hear it anyway? I just think it has bad news written on it, and really, if you want to stop teens loitering, call the police or get security. The theory is alright, but I think they'll notice that sales will drop to some extent. Of course, if someone who could hear it wanted to shop, they could invest in some ear plugs.

You too? It bugs the hell out of me when a TV is on sleep mode...and even worse when it's first turned on.

If shops install this everywhere it would be extremely annoying for people like me, who are homeschooled... because sometimes we have a legitimate reason to go to a store! (who would have thought of that!! )

not to mention people in the 20-30 range that can hear it and any other teens who need to go to a store

seems like you could somehow label the store as being age discriminating and sue them for millions of dollars... (at least in the US )

lol @Greed- exact same thing here, i get all annoyed at it and they're like "what noise?"... even my little sister who is almost 4 years younger then me can't hear it...

Same here.

Personally I find the idea of driving people away with sound ridiculous. As if portable music & loud concerts aren't already hard enough on our ears. Not to mention it's driving away potential customers. If there's a problem with thugs/chavs/whatever, that's something that needs to be addressed through law enforcement or in the long-term through society; this is just making another problem.

yeah, doing something like this is like slapping on code to compensate for a bug instead of taking time to understand the problem and fix it properly.

if you can sue McDonalds for serving a cup of boiling coffee then you can sue somebody for marketing a machine with the deliberate purpose of causing defness in the higher ranges for teens! *inhales deeply*

What a lame idea. I'm at the age where going to the shops before three is alright, ie, no longer in school, yet that noise bugs me too.

Hearing the noise itself is kind of handy when you think about it. A lot of electricity is wasted by leaving TV's on standby.

But yes, if I were to go to my local supermarket only to be deafened by it, I'd go freaking mental.

why not just use old Val Doonican recordings?, "I`m dreaming of white Christmas" always fills me with terror when I hear it, I used to work in a supermarket and after hearing that come round on the muzak system for the thirtieth time that shift you find a muscle in the corner of your eye starting to twitch and a strong desire to be elsewhere.

Dont see why most of you have any problems with it. They are thinking of running them /outside/ the stores where groups of kids loiter, im all for that as i'm not hanging around outside the store. Im maybe there for 3 seconds as I walk past and go inside. The only one they mention having any use inside the store is that panic button one and that WOULD upset me. But if they wanna put little noise emitters outside their shop doors then im all for it, personally I dont enjoy having to navigate a group of chavs to go do my shopping either.

can`t they allow the public to cull chavs or something?, maybe the council pest control dept should be enlarged to handle outbreaks of chavs, they could use giant traps baited with "bling" or max power magazines, put em out of our misery.

I still think it's a bad idea, I don't like noises...the only thing I can stand being loud is music.

No, but the sound could be directional. Depending on the system you can get fairly tightly zoned sounds - I mean, isn't the US Army using a sound based weapon as a 'non-lethal' option?

I find this very morally dodgy - plus surely groups of teens make more business than they steal / scare away? Why not do what our local cornershop owners used to do in St Pauls - have a sawn off to aim at random kids on their third warning... firm but fair

Even though I'm no longer a teen I still feel like one, and get quite annoyed with everyone judging a whole section of society just becasue of their age or what they wear

And yeah I'm 24 and I get really annoyed by the noise my tv makes when on standby...

So quieter = better ? I listen to my music at reasonable volumes in my house and low on my mp3 player, I have no interest in going deaf at 40, but when I go to a rock concert I want to hear ringing for a day or so afterward

Definatly. I'm a loner and don't fit any of the usual high school student labels, but it still pisses me off when people judge who look like or hang out with goths/rockers... and, yes, even emos and gangstas, just because they fit a label which isn't compatible with the lifestyle they think everyone should lead.

But if space outside the store is public property how can store owners decide if they want or dont want to have someone hanging outside. If its public property then emmiting this noise will be considered as an attack

Car parks and the piece of pavement in front of a place of business are often considered the business' responsibility. How far the sound goes beyond that, I don't know.

I don't know if you have it in your town centres, but I've known dubious looking discount clothing shops to blare out 'trendy' music from speakers at the front door to try to attract their chosen type of customer. Sounds horrid and you can hear it from a fair distance away - it drives me off, that's for sure

I wonder two things -

1 - Can the people who set these up actually hear how loud they are? If not, how can they tell what range they have.

2 - What's going to happen when someone who can hear it (teen or not) registers a complaint with the police for breach of the peace.

And while I'm here - will this send babies screaming when they get taken into the shop? Because if there's one noise guaranteed to make me avoid a shop, it's a baby screaming. Imagine how horrid it would be to be assaulted by the spontaeneous explosive wailing of small bundles of stomach and lungs that people call babies when you go to the shop - even if you can't hear the whine.

I like the idea - there's no reason for people to hang around outside shops. I like the fact that it's not bringing down coppers to see them off, it's 'optional' on the part of the people.
But I think it hasn't been thought through.

Maybe random bursts of the sound over the course of the day - say nothing for half an hour, then 10 minutes of the sound. Might help?

That device could be used as a weapon if it's in the wrong hands too. Imagine an employee at Toys-R-Us gets fired... he goes to the store and secretly plants the device. The kids wouldn't want to be there and thus Toys-R-Us looses lots of money.

I just showed one of the kids that comes over to my house that article... his first words were "I want that for my house!"... aparently he's tired of his ex-girlfriend coming over to yell at him.

wasn`t Kurt Cobain killed by his wife or something?, she got away scot free with it too from what I recall, only in the US could someone leave so many holes and impossibilities in the crime and still get a verdit of suicide returned.

{in post edit} yes, its what I thought, I read of this at the time, anyone who returned suicide as a verdict must have been a 2ft tall retarded mutant with no head

That's just the crazy fans who couldn't believe Kurt would kill himself. Kurt had attempted suicide before, but failed. You could say any suicide could be a murder in disguise, but I'll leave this one to the tin-foil hat wearing crowd.

I remember when Cobain died some of his fans committed suicide after. Now *that* is incomprehensible.

I don't find it that hard to believe. People with little care for their lives commit suicide because their sports team loses the match, because their girlfriend split up with them, et cetera... somebody's idol blowing their brains out is a pretty strong push actually.

And I have to say it isn't exactly "tin foil hat" to think that his girlfriend killed him; there's certainly hardly any evidence for it, but on the other hand, given the level of drugs in his body at the time he was supposed to have pulled the trigger, he should have been incapable of doing it. Probably a fluke of our methods of calculating the drugs' effect, yes, but it does seem a bit odd.
