I showcased this little rpg I was messing around with awhile ago but now I have made some improvements. For those of you who dont know mystic dream is going to be a fairly openended rpg that allows small numbers of players to cooperate together and mould the world as they see fit. So far Im thinking of four player coop via network or online. Its really just a fun project but well see how it goes. I'm workig on a demo release which will feature one race with four classes. The race will be elementals and the four classes will be focuser, summoner, dark elemental and controller. Each one has their unique attributes and abilities and they each have one different power at the moment. Below is a picture of a focuser attacking an roller bug npc and using striking a weapon smith with lightning. Still needs proper character model but I guess ill keep coding till I have a complete engine then maybe someone can slip in a model.

Well quite a bit of work done on this. I added another class which is the dark elemental and his special power is dark lightning as seen in the screenshot below Im still working on the effect though. Also added health bars for npcs and a proper menu system. I have aquired two Human models but I need someone to rig them with a skeleton so I can animate them properly. Anyone help?? Only a few more things to do like add the last two class types and then the proper character models etc.

Well heaps of updates. I added a new camera system where you use the mouse to swing around and zoom in and out etc. Added the ability to save out players items and load them back in. Improved the dark lightning effect. Fixed some bugs and prevented the player from leaving the map. Added in a level indicator for the npcs which will also soon show which creatures are easy for the player to defeat. Added in Health bars for the player and npcs. Added in death animation and respawning. Added in the basic frame work for weapon creation. Added a new item to the weapon smith npc called a water crystal used in the augumentation of weapons. Aquired two Human models but need them to be rigged with skeletons so I can animate. Two pics below enjoy lots more is in the works....

Thanks ill keep working hard to deserve these nuts lol. Here are two short gameplay videos they show one of my characters a summoner class walking around and attacking the weapon smith with a roller bug summon as well as some melee. I didnt quite capture the battle between me and the roller bug but you can experience that when I test it lol. The quality isnt that great and its quite slow but that is just the video capture software.

Heaps of updates im doing really well with this project. Added up to 30 npc creatures which at the moment are just roller bugs and store npcs but they can become any creature I want. Tweaked the power of some npcs for balance. Fixed a few bugs and have a experience bar now to show how well your doing. Im trying find someone to make a nice interface at some point so I can have a proper interface. Enjoy the screens ill be testing it soon.

Yeah, the inventory looks a bit obtrusive, id have it able to toggle
on/off. Regardless those placeholder sprites hurt my eyes and I got bored so here, have some free replacements made by me:

You're doing well though, keep going with that engine!

looks good! the dark lightning looks... dark

It looks like you're using DBPro's built in commands for text, and those can really slow down your game... you might want to look into cloggy's text dll, or something like that

and of course as already mentioned (and i'm sure you're aware of and plan to replace) the inventory is a bit obtrusive and an eye sore....

Hey thanks all for the comments I continue to work hard for you. The inventory only shows itself now if the mouse is over it. The next thing on my list is to make it so if you use an item all the others will move back a space so not to have a bunch of empty slots. Im also working on adding a second race called "The Shadow" they have some awesome abilities but more will be seen soon. I want to allow players to visit different areas so if anyone is interested in making me some real levels it would be much appreciated.

This, to me, looks like it could turn out to be a really cool game. Maybe you should comsider making it a MMORPG...

A mmorpg is not something I want to work on at this stage because of many issues such as servers and all the extra code necessary. It is possible that 100s of people maybe present in a server at one time but well see how this pans out.

Yup its flexible enough for the future to upgrade but only if there was a big enough player base then I would consider.

Well thought Id better update you all I have done some design work to plan out the rest of this project and how I see it im half way through. Still quite a few tasks but some of them are small. Im looking for graphically minded people to pitch in and help out now im not an artist my any means but I work hard in the code department and I have got all the ground work done so you graphics could just be loaded into the engine and they should work. Im looking specificly for level modellers people who can create they different areas that I have designed. If however anyone is interested in other areas such as 2d or character modelling or even jut weapons, armour and clothes then your welcome. Im going to probably open up a real website just for this project to. Just took a quick snap of a controller class using his elemental strike power enjoy...

Well if your interested I could quickly release an offline version but getting multiplayer to work with little ease is not so easy so it will take a bit of work.

The inventory is fixed now it works correctly. Im getting along quite far the only big thing for me to code is multiplayer and im getting there its just weird with multisync ive only ever been used to dbpro multiplayer. The only other big bug is to do with animation and that is only one animation can be play at a time. However I have a plugin called advanced animation which will fix this only problem is the dwarf model isnt really suited to use this system.

Im not sure I could quite easily release an offline version for people to play with but online will take a wee bit more time. The ftp commands in dbpro are bugged to so a switched to using your dll except its only a demo so thats another set back.

I thought I would spend some time to explain the design ideas behind the game and the direction im looking to take it. For starters combat is not going to be the only focus of this game. No more grinding your way to the top only to find its boring being all powerful. Not only can you use combat orientated skills but political abilities, crafting or construction related abilities even just recreation ones. Over time these various things will be added through the updates. Now down to the basics the world will consist of 7 mayjor 'empires' now what this means is the seven races are each an empire. There are various locations in the world in which each empire has control of but if an player becomes elected he can choose to wage war with a particular empire and attempt to capture further territory. How this works well at least in my design documents is that at the center of every town will be a town flag. In order to capture a town you must fight your way to the flag and hold out long enough to capture it then that city belongs to your empire. The political power also can decide things like how high taxes are and what kind of events can be run in the town etc. Dont worry there is plenty of checks and balances players can be voted out after a few weeks or removed by force. Both npcs and players will be providing resources for their respective towns. Players will have the option to buy land and build homes, shops etc and sell their things or what ever they want. Now I know this sounds like a big undertaking but im building it all on a simple acheiveable level that I think will really appeal to the players. For example the city will be divided up into plots with pegs and rope lining where houses can be bought and built so the house model will replace the pegs and wala instant home. Anyway more updates soon im wokring hard to make this a reality and of course im doing this stage by stage.

Hey guys I decided to whip up a quick offline demo so you could walk around and kill stuff etc. Its got a few bugs but ill try fix them soon. Controls are move the mouse to the left and right of the screen to turn and up and down to rotate camera. Up key to move forward and down key to move back. Use keys 1-5 to select different attack styles and the 6 key to select your magical power. To initate any kind of attack use the left mouse button and finally to buy from the mage store npc press the space bar when your close to him. Remember you must create a character first. And this is just a quick offline demo I made the real online one is not so buggy.

Hi admiral,

I tried three classes, they worked for me!

I found out that you can fight with different styles by hitting nr 1to7 or so, but I could never hit a monster / do him any harm!

Looks nice altogether, just the view is a bit limited as you cant realy see long way ahead of your moving direction.

greets,
Barnski.

Yeah I know ill prob improve the camera a bit. I know I have some balancing to do I didnt want to make the roller bug too easy nor too hard but if you persist and beat away at them they will die and once you reach level 2-3 you will be strong enough to notice the damage.

I fixed the camera you can now zoom in and out with the + and - keys allowing for a wider range of view. Also working through the issues of online play with the help of benjamin. Is it just me or does the game cause an error after you have closed it?? I wanna kick the development of this game into a high gear so make everything more finished a pro looking. If anyone can create menus or any gui/hud type stuff contact me so I can create a proper hud and menu.
