Hello all,

A friend of mine sent me this, it's actually kind of interesting. I'm not one for politics but this was a good read . What do you all think of this? Does this law apply just to those in the U.S. or is the whole world under it now?

Its just so open to abuse... How will anyone know whether the name is correct ? What happens is a legitimate e-mail is sent, but someone claims its "annoying" ?

Thank goodness its only "legal" in America...

My question is, how do they plan to enforce it effectively?

I don't think they can.

I feel, politicians in our country, try to make everybody happy way too much. For example, the stupid atheist wanting "In God, we trust" tooken off the dollar bill because "OMFG SOME PEOPLE DON'T BELEIVE IN GOD LOL". Senseless bull that nobody cares about.
That kind of thing is taking over the country, that and just plain idiots/skanks. To Alberta Canada I say!

Edit:
I bet this will be like that stupid New York tax for items bought online, and never "really" take effect..

ever read the book "1984"? just as i and george orwell predicted... america is starting to be controlled more and more. although the setting in 1984 is "airstrip 1" and is referring to England (orwells home) America is still being screwed over by sh!t like this.

Wanting to move out of your country is the ineffectual response. The correct response is to use your democratic rights to complain. Also, as you're Americans, pick a target and sue someone and claim a gazillion dollars.

Am I the only patriotic American? I'd rather live here than in Canada or europe, just because I know they have a different system than us. (to much tax, poorer government, laws, ect) I spent over 16 years learning things from our point, and I would rather not go to another country and have to learn how things work.

Well, I'm immune to the law anyway, as I'm using my real name. So, I can flame anyone and everyone to my heart's content. Let the battles begin...

I sigh at redneck comments. I lived in texas 2 years, and pacific northwest MOST of my life. Texas had a better education system, criminal system (I am all for getting rid of any guy that killed someone), tax system, and road system than up here. The people are nicer, but not retarted. I lived in Benbrook, TX near fortworth, which was pretty close to where bush has his ranch, and the education was great. Only a few people had accents. The only time I ever saw people with accents was when I went 20-30 miles south, and that was just because of ancestory. Then it brings me to you stereotyping rednecks. Argh, people in america are retarted. Generally Speaking. They claim Texas to be redneck central, but unless you live in Austin, Dallas, or Fort Worth, or the small dotted areas, you probably wont have an accent. Bush DOES have speaking problems. So? I cant speak english without stuttering every 6-7 words, and I had to take english speach programs most of my life. Gah, you get me into the worst sort of rant. The rant that comes right from my heart.

It's becoming more difficult to stereotype a redneck. Did anybody go see Brokeback Mountain?

Just so long as we all understand that America is not f-worded up, it's just some of the people, some politicians, and the laws they pass that are f-worded up. Most people are normal. Except for emos.

I'll second most of that (from Undercover Noob). I grew up in a town of 1200 in central Texas. Very, very few people had accents, and most of the people I grew up with either listened to rap or rock, although there were some die hard country boys.

Being in the military I've been a lot of places and met a lot of people. I find that people are generally the same wherever you go. I also find that the spread of intelligence and dumbness is pretty even wherever you go.

People not from Texas tend to have something against Texans, and Texans are very proud of the state. There is a sense of pride and identity that I don't see in most other states. Californian's tend to have it too, just in a different way. People from Nebraska tend to say things like "Yeah, I'm from Nebraska, the place nobody is from..."

Anyway, a cyber law is more of a "cyber guideline." Nobody is going to try to enforce it. It's just legal precedence that guarantees punishment in case it ever comes up in court, and it will at some point. They don't care about individuals, they care about people like the mass mailing Viagra boys that include fake reply-to addresses.

Sorry, I'm just going to have to give you both a slap in the face here. I can guarantee you both have accents, in fact, you will all have accents, the only reason you don't pick up on it is because you're so used to hearing it. Go to another country and live there for a couple years, when you return you will realise that yes, everyone you knew has a blatantly obvious accent.

I can't stand hearing people complain about their free country and whine to mammy about wanting to move away from it because of stupid political moves. If your biggest problem in life is the fact that the Internet may be goverened, then I am jealous!

Compared to North Korea, you guys are living like kings. Don't be arses, people. You don't know how good you have it.

And no, I don't live in North Korea, but I'm planning a trip there just to see how good we have it. Our prime minister may play ignorant and claim to not know what happened to the missing $100 million even though he was the finance minister at the time, and sure it p's off a lot of people, but to move away from this country that I was raised in and love--- never crossed my mind once.

Here at least I can speak my mind about the government and vote for the Conservative Party to kick the cheaters out of power. Here a majority of the people are richer than 95% of the rest of the world. That's luxury, dudes.

Umm... no. I'm going to have to give that slap right back to you. I've lived in South Korea and Okinawa, in addition to all over the United States, east and north of Texas. No one ever knows that I'm from Texas, because they expect some crazy accent, which I've outlined with examples of why that's not the case. They know because I'm proud of where I'm from, and I eventually tell them.

My point in case is that I haven't lived in Texas or America for a good while, and I've done so intermittently. And, being in a military environment, I'm exposed to a little bit of everything, national and foreign. I might not recognize my accent, but the hundreds of people I've gotten to know sure would.

No, that's not at all what I said. I said if I had one, someone would have told me. Instead, when they find out I'm from Texas, they tell me they would have expected a Texan accent. I thought I was abundantly clear about that.

I don't know about you, but I don't go around telling everyone they have an accent if they do. I work with people from many different cultures, and I don't say "Hey, you have a Chinese accent! Hey, you have an Australian accent! Hey, you have an English accent!"

Hard to imagine someone from Texas without an accent

Hell, people even say we have accents. It's all relative to where you live.

Technically I'd say the English don't have accents, and every other english speaker does.

I never said you had a Texan accent, I said you had an accent, you even said that yourself: you said "my accent". I'm trying to make the point that everyone will have an accent but you won't realise it because you're so used to hearing it. And Jeku is right, people don't generally walk around saying "Oh, you have a such and such accent!"

Well, everyone has a local accent. We were talking about Texas accents specifically.

Quote: "And Jeku is right, people don't generally walk around saying "Oh, you have a such and such accent!"

A Texas accent tends to stand out, like a Brooklyn accent. People do point it out, in America anyway. People with thick accents get made fun of, big time, because it's funny to hear them talk. People don't know where I'm from by how I talk. I could be from Ohio for all they know. I suppose I base a lot of my language on the mass media, which is usually pretty white bread. The only dead giveaway that I'm from Texas is my superior atheleticism.

Quote: "Technically I'd say the English don't have accents, and every other english speaker does."

I've heard different English accents. It's not as noticable to me, but local accents are a fact of life.

Thinking that everyone from Texas has a Texan accent is like saying everyone from Australia talks like Crododile Dundee. It's easy to base an opinion on one thing you've seen (like a western), but often much different in practice.

Often I have to speak to people from all over, like today I had to speak to Chinese and Czech customers. Czech women have a great accent, I can listen to that all day - Chinese people though tend to be a nightmare to understand, even the Chinese woman who works here in marketing who apparantly speaks fluent English, I can't understand a word of what she's saying usually. I imagine that it's largely down to me, Scots tend to speak far too fast for most people, I reckon that makes us listen faster too, like harder for us to slow down and listen properly to what they're mangling on about. Honestly, we can ask someone what they'd like for dinner with 1 word (whatchawantfuryirdenner) - learning to decipher that destroy part of the brain.

Now, I didn't have time to read all of the posts in this thread, but I have my 2 cents about this law. It is crap, the internet is such a great place because of anonomosity, and the internet just wont be the same with this law. Just think, if say, a 10 year old gets on the computer, starts chatting with someone, gets angry over some little thing, and starts flaming, being rude, and causing all out hell, they'd technically have to disclose their real name. Now, if he happened to be flaming an internet predator... It's just ridiculous. I live in America, but I really am not fond of our government lately. One stupid move after another...I wish Bush hadnt been reelected...

No they won't. That's not how the law will be applied. It's just legal precedence for court cases, nothing more. It's just covering your ass (or, the court's asses) with paperwork. It's hard to try a company that does that, because what they're doing WAS technically not illegal, and a good lawyer could argue that. With that law, there isn't much to argue.

As for Bush, that's purely Political Culture, not Geek Culture.

Quote: "Ah, but in Québec, and much of Europe, you can drink underage"
No you can't. Just about every country is lower than the US, but it is (by definition) not legal to drink underage in those countries. UK is 18 in pubs, for instance (something younger at home), but a 19 year old American drinking alcohol in the UK would not be drinking underage. Cos they are in the UK. Hmmm, wonder what would happen if you walked into a US embassy with an Alcopop in London though? American soil and all that.

As to English accents, grief go look up wav files. Some of them are totally impossible to understand really. And thats not counting scotland, wales, or northern ireland (ie. rest of UK). Even the worst american accent I have ever heard (red neck type) is possible to just about understand. And even though (I think) the UK is smaller (a lot smaller in most cases) than most US states, I think most states don't even make up half the population (only one I believe has more - just - than half of the population) of the UK. Lots of people in a small space basically.

Oh, and since this applies to anyone in America, then only you lot suck big style. Heh. Feel free to slag me off (then go to jail). Or slag me off with your real name and go against forum rules. At least I think that is the case. Isn't it something to do with protecting children or somesuch? Funny really. Have a go (expressing your free speech and all that) at someone anonymously and risk fines and jail, or state who you are and risk being raped/ murdered by evil person. Although this will only work this way for a very short time before Blair removes himself from Bush's a**e and invokes the same law (bypassing some fundermental rights obviously). Chuckle. Probably put myself on a tracking computer right there.... darn... need a new door anyway...

Ooh. I think people got me wrong.
I love this country too.
I just feel idiots/skanks are (will) taking(take) over.
Personally, I want to retire to canada when I become old and gray.
Canada has always appealed to me.
I also want to go to Greece, to explore my heritage.
Just ignore my past post, please.
Thanks.

Ya cor get a more raw english accent than the Black Country accent, it's funny though cuz americans think it's ace and ask 'how do you get that accent'.

I play xbox live alot and still find sometimes that the language barrier can still exist to a certain degree between two people speaking the same language with local dialects and accents.
