yes i know the name suck.

anyway here is a wip of my current game in progress.
so far it runs smooth with the ship, 3 matrices, backgrounds and over 100 particle objects in screen at once.

what i am trying to accomplish is a game whith lots of colors and explosions. i dont know anything about particles so this will be a bit of a challenge. i have spend 4 hours trying to figure something out, and when i did it was only 2 lines of code

but thats just me, i suck at everything.

so here are some screenshot of the ship (30% textured), some bullets, flames and backround and landscape.

any improvements and tips would be awesome.

oh and this game will be my entry in the Shmup Dev competition, and it will be open source when it is finished.

that looks pretty cool, but I think I would move the camera back a bit so you can see more action and not just a big ship moving along.

no, no enemy yet. im doing a menu perhaps ill upload a screenshot of it. i have added 6 weapon upgrades out of 20. i've added sounds and music. lol im doing stuff i should be doing at the very end, but yea i suck.

ok so any comments on the terrain? perhaps ill make a terrain in a 3d modelling tool but i suck at modelling also.

i think i will make some enemies right now just for fun.

i'll be back with progress soon.

Nice menu you got there. Maybe you could set a backdrop. For the name, why not name it, for exemple, Total Deflagration, or somthing like that. hope to see more progress soon.

And I agree, the camera should be a little longer away from the ship... Would make a great effect!

ok so i have updated the game again. it now have some mines or whatever. when you shoot them they explode. and they appear t random.

Nice screens. I mean, by adding a backdrop, remove that whit backdrop of you're menu and put an image or another color. That's what I've meaned. but anyway, keep at it.

update:

added explosion sounds
added coins
improved detection between bullets and enemies

it runs at ~30fps on the worst with a P4 3.0ghz, intel extreme gfx and 1gig ram (sync locked at 60fps)
it runs at 66fps on on the worst with my Athlon64 3500, 6600GT and 1gig ram (sync locked at 60fps)
so you will probably need a pretty decent computer to play this :/ i think it have something to do with my collision detection calculation

Looking cool - I think the ship could do with being a little smaller, but that's probably just me. I think that the sky you've used is intended for a skysphere too - why not see how it looks?, like just make a big sphere, texture with that image, and stick it on the camera's position with culling, fog and lighting disabled.

I wish people would'nt say that! - I'd see the point if I'd even won a TGC compo before, but I haven't. It's more about making the game for us, Pincho would like to win himself a copy of DBPro but it's far more important for us to simply finish it in time.

I like this compo though, something to get stuck into that isn't too involved, writing shooters is fun.

if you say so, but in grant's code he uses plains so i did too :/ and yes i know how to make skyspheres.

im kind of in trouble with the fps.
well it's not a problem now but i can see it coming.


see, i have plans to use lots of objects in the game, each object have to check for collision with eachother object, so i will use lots of FOR NEXT loops

what would you guys recomend i do? im using the square root of ie a bullet position and a enemy position to check for collision. so i have done it like this:



should i switch to sparkys DLL ?


update:
* control ship / menu using keyboard and not mouse
* smaller ship (yeah that was in last update, but i forgot to add it)
* power ups
* power up up to weapon lvl 6 (i have yet to decide what kind of weapon effect i should use next :/ any tips? i was thinking lasers but that would be something like lvl 17 yeah i want 20 weapon levels)

i have here a 3 minutes long demo.
why three minutes? because there is not much to the game at the moment, so 3 minutes of gameplay is more then enough.

Cool!
Suggestions:
*Make the plane move up and down faster
*Where the matrix overlaps in a few places, it doesn't join evenly.
*The shooting is very buggy It keeps making long vertical lines of bullets.

yeah i have noticed that vertical line of bullets bug. but that only happens when you have lvl 6 weapon upgrade yes? thats how it is for me.
ill see what i can figure out

about the plane moving faster, yeah that could be fixed easily.

Yes, the vertical bullet bug only happens in the later upgrades.

The matrix is a hard thing to do. I think you might be able to make the height for each point on one side the same height as the ones in the other side. In code. I'm not sure how to do that, but I have an idea.

Nice! I like the weapon-powerups!

The online ranking didn't work on my machine, when i tried to post a score I got an error message and the game ended.

Btw are the bullets and explode effects objects or sprites? if they are objects then you could try to replace them by sprites, this can speed up your game drastically! DB is much faster in handeling lots of sprites

that plays nicely I got some seemingly random slowdown, but other than that it ran well

Nice game you got there!

Thought my computer got some quite big slowdowns, you know my specs already Just so others can see that they really aren't that bad, I'll also post them here:

The game could run better if you optimized the code I think

Then there is the laser bug. But you already know about that one

yeah the vertical line of bullet bug is fixed. i kind of liked that bug :/ it gave me big score... yeah well..

im working on optimising the code as i write. yeah i can do two things at once. even three. i am actually out mowing the snow. im writing through telekinesis. yeah you heard me. ok so i lied. but i am working on optimising the code. i think i actually got it to work a little.

it runs at (sync locked at 150) 166 maximum and 152 min. that is level 6 weapon upgrade. but i have yet to test it on other peoples computer.

Kanga, yeah your tunes are great, and i allready added you in the credits section of the menu. did you notice? anyway i will aslo make a text document with info and more credits so dont worry

yeah i forgot to mention that i use the low verison of the music .^^ i will switch to the higher ones later some time. but for now, (and to keep it low size) ill go with the low res

rar gave me a 4mb file while zip gave me a 7mb file. zip is kind of outdated, if you have that i would suggest you moved to rar

haahaha kanga, 7000 is good ..but you can definetly get way more than that:
* coins - 1point
* mines - 10points
* powerup - 500points

anyone made it to the highscore?

new in version 0.5: (not download, no new screenshots)
* optimised the code
program now run at 66/67fps (min/max) on my computer at home.
it runs at 38/39fps on my computer at work.

this is so much better than v0.4 where the fps was 20/34fps at work, and 52/67 fps at home yay i guess i am a little cool.

but because of the optimised code, i am no longer checking for collision each loop, so some bullets go straight through the enemies. :/ im sure there's a way around this i only need to find it and lassix gave me some good ideas..

Ran MUCH faster, no slowdown that I noticed good job! I got 23220

I noticed that sometimes the bullets don't seem to hit the enemies, only occasionally though

i make a bullet check each 5th loop or whatever. so thats the secret behind the speedup.. i think :/ i actually made it much slower, and when i thought i had rewritten the collision part to where it was before any modifications, it actually ran faster, so im not sure what i did to speed it up

im still working on the game, so if you wont see any updates for a while (most likely not) bear in mind that this is part of a competition, so after (or before if im lucky) march there will be a pretty cool game ready.

i have allready made som addons and upgrades, but i wont tell you what .^^ big surprise oh yea im cool.

i can tell you this though: the game is at v0.7

enemies is currently at the top on my to-do list.
i have the mines, they will just fly by.
then there are enemy ships (the ones im working on now) they can fire at the player, fly in patterns and eventually just fly away.
then there's the boss or bosses. the competition requires atleast one boss. so there is lots to do before the final product .^^

so, should i erase the highscore list? (everyones best score that is currently on the list will be spared. so the nerd will have one entry, his best etc.) i think ill do that

yep.. i think i accomplished that. you need quite a fast computer for this game :/ i think.. it runs pretty well on my computer at work but its the lasers im concerned about.. they use lots of calculations..

It's looking pretty good!

I played it on 1024,768,32 display mode with shaders on and I the lowest FPS was 24 and the highest was 39 I think.

Not sure on the system specs(it's my bros computer.)

One thing that irked me was that the ship was too bright and I lost it in the clouds many times. Other than that it's looking great, good use of particles. Keep it up!

1280*1024*32 and 39min 67max and bloom? looks really bad tho i suggest you remove it as you cant really see anything, and i totally got the highestscore but after pressing submit online zonealarm popped up and the exe kinda froze. was good tho, i think to get the better weapons you should have to get more of those shiney things as once youve got the auto gun then getting to max weapon takes no time and the last boss was way to easy. also the terrain doesnt tile s well as theres a big hole at the ends.

lasers were cool although seemed to slow the dame down a bit seemed like they were made of lots of small bullets.

i think there should be more weapon types, maybe some sort of big pulse weapon that looks like a moving shield :p.

i knmow the bloom is crap. its just there for fun and you have the option to turn it off (as was originally intended)

good idea dark coder, i have plans to add a weapon system where you have like 500 bullets and when you shoot and get below 500 bullets then you degrade to the lower weapon upgrade.
but i will also add what you said. to collect more, say 3 shiny things, to get a weapon upgrade.

terrain will be changed, as i said im waiting for the new media. dont know when i wwill get it and it might happen that i have to make it myself.

i've had problems with the lasers. i use many objects as you said, because i cant create only 1 plain and bend it like that. weapon level 11 is really bad because it uses 2 lasers which means 200 small laser objects that each check for collision with every enemy on the screen. (yes i know my programming skills suck).

cool idea on the pulse gun. more weapon upgrades are welcome i am all empty.

and yes the boss(es) will be changed and upgraded. they are just temporarly bosses to get 2 levels.

* new first boss that fires and acts like a "real" boss.
* credits (or "life" if you want.) is added. player have 5 credits.
* updated hud with bars instead of text
* each time you collect a powerup you must collect one more after that to get the new weapon upgrade.
like if you have weapon level 5 you need to collect 6 more powerups to get weaponlevel 6.

also, try and beat the highscore!

thanks yea i dont get it how you get that much score! i got 130000 at most :/

and i have rewritten the first level so its divided in 8 "areas" because the competition judges will judge each game by its first level and boss i will have to do this, because my first level sucks.

argh, i can't play it . I downloaded it from your website and it load fine, but when i click on arcade, it gets to 90% then just exits the program with no error message, like i pressed escape

Try to move the folder to C:\%NameOfFolder% or something.
i have got this error too, and i dont know why i get it :/
