That video is cool - I like the way the words are completely not what it says in the song - or am i the only preson who can actually understand what that guy says? lol

Anyway what is "EMO" its only a phrase I've heard recently. I know its like dressing in black getting depressed and listenning to metal, but what specifically makes you "emo" as oposed to "goth" "greebo" or whatever?

*mutters* In my day the music you listenned to didn't mean you got put in some social label, most people at my school listenned to a wide range of stuff and just enjoyed what was "good"

Isn't that also the description of a goth? I think "real" goths are suppsoed to kill themselves before they reach 21 so they don't become "old and boring" - no offense buyt what loosers...

Well I guess only American teens would get it. Emos are usually middle class kids who wear makeup, slit their wrists, and attend catholic church regularly...

Suicide sucks - I'd have thought anyone as "into" thinking they were "hard" ans most metal fans would see it as cowardice. Oh well.

Just watched it again, here's my attempt at the lyrics - wonder how close i came... anyonne else want to try and see any mistakes I made? (don't look it up that would be cheating!) Guessing poorly sung lyrics is always fun lol

Not bad lyrics really, certainly not the worst I've heard - wish (particularly american) rock bands would prounce their lyrics properly so they couldn't be mis-interpretted, being as they claim their lyrics are so important

I had to reread that sentence a few times--- forgot that Washington has a "little" Vancouver. Awww, how cute

There's an emo coffee shop where I used to live, where they serve Fair Trade coffee and whatnot. 95% of their customer base is emo kids who are always there, all day drinking coffee and writing poetry, talking about the evil government, etc. And they all dress similar and the guys have large, biker tattoos yet they have feminine hairstyles and wear makeup. And they wear tight pants. What is today's youth coming to??

No, but it gets harder if you watch it. Hate Phycological Stuff.

The guy who made this made lyrics that were so wildly different, and so random. I know the intent was to make fun of the song. But seriously? Half way though I started wondering if he really THOUGHT that is what he was saying.

Your rendition of the lyrics are very close... almost too close.

Urbandictionary puts emo in the simpliest terms, I think...

Quote: "girlfriend: C'mon, lets have sex.
boyfriend: I'm too sad to have sex.
girlfriend: I'm sad too; lets have sex and cry.
boyfriend: I'm already crying."

'Emo' is a very wide term - it's adopted by whiney teenagers who want attention, labeled on others who simply have depression problems, misused on goths, et cetera. My two cents; I don't like whiney attention whores any more than the next guy but I have little tolerance for people who just bash anyone who hang out with that crowd. The "upper crust" of lucky, preppy kids who have lived their entire lives with some amount of wealth and class and a relatively solid family are often the ones to point and laugh at goths/emos/punks/etc - and they would snap like twigs if they had to go through what a lot of those kids have. In summary, if you can't percieve the difference between the "mom, I'll cut myself if you don't buy me another cell phone" emo and the emo who's been abused by their parents their whole life, don't critisize.

Not aiming that at anyone on the forum; just a general rant. Personally I'm just a normal-dressed loner with some goth tendancies. Being outgoing about my emotions does not come naturally to me at all.

haha a lot of my friends are Emo, but never have slit their wrists, there was a wanna be emo who everyone hates tried to be emo, and ended up slitting his wrists....the wrong way, bloody attention seeker, although he never got it, guess thats the american description of an emo, here its just people who dress in black tight cloths, constantly depressed, (although my friends are always happy....except Tom, he is depressed because he can't get a girlfriend ) and they also listen to emo music like Funeral for a friend (bleh! awful)

@Kangaroo, the diff between true emo and goths are that Emo's listen to emo music and metal like Funeral for a friend and want to die, goths listen to goth music and metal like Marilyn Manson and worship the devil (or like things to do with evil and suffering) and some like people dying.

Emo kids are goths who didnt make it. Emo kids dont usually listen to metal, but hardcore screamo, acoustic and any bands with the words suffocate, blood, romance,my -insert un origional word here- Romance, stab and drown(ing).

Dont get them mixed up with "scene" kids, scene kids are the oes who dress emo for the image and listen to bands like fall out boy... which shouldnt be classified as a band. Fall out boy is the devil.

List of bands to saty AWAY from:
Fall Out Boy
Good Charlotte
Blink 182
Taking Back Sunday
Any band with the words from the above list.

^^^^^^
Scene kid bands.

Goths usually dont bathe, regualarly... Emo kids are usually obsessed with looking pretty.

Did i mention i hate Fall Out Boy?

Is it true that the theme song for Malcom in the Middle is an emo song? I think I recall someone telling me that once, but since we have next to no 'emo's' down here, I had no idea if he was right or not.

Something that really ticked me off recently was my friend visiting my house and watching me play HL2. I was being chased by a helicopter in the Route Canal level, and I heard him mumble behind me "Pfft. Emo music...". (Refering to the chase's music, which I think was wicked-awsome as all of HL2's music)

Am I emo now?!!

They're not bad. Not my cup of tea, but not bad really. Good Charlotte is trash though.

I don't listen to any emo music but I guess it's sort of in where you're standing - according to hardcore metalheads my alternative rock/metal tastes are 'emo', but emo kids can't stand it either . And of course to those who don't listen to any rock it's "all the same"

Exeat - I thought that song was written by They Might Be Giants, which is about as quirky of a band as you can get, unless I am getting two shows mixed up.

Excuse me? All of the emo kids I have met (and know personally, which is quite a lot) come from this upper crust you refer to. They're rebelling against their parents, the "system", or whatever. They're not special or particularly intellectual--- they just like to believe they are.

It's the same thing with the punks in the 80's. They thought they were smarter than the conformists by not dressing normal or nice--- but really, many of them just looked like idiots.

Mattman i dont get it...you do know in all the times ive talked to you that you have been more emo than anyone i know...

Emo is simple...it stands for emotional...Emo Music is music where they convey an emotion...i should know i was in a preemo band which is punk rock screamo and emo...i dont wear black...i dont slit my wrists...im not always sad...there is however an emo scene...the emo scene is full of people who act emotional wear thick rimmed black glasses and tight clothing...then there are emo people...emo people dont always like emo music but they are depressed...there is alot of different definition for what emo is...but alot of idiots confuse depressed attention seeking kids with the emo scene music...

They are however completly different, people who listen to emo scene music are not depressed...the place these 2 definitions cross paths is on places like myspace or xanga where half the people have emo scene music and talk about death...

For the most part emo is just emotional...anything emotional is emo...just a shortening of the word...

Also i wrote this post while listening to hawthorne heights...now im going to go cry...

Trying to say emo is this and that is just trying to generalize a group of people...its just not a thing smart people do...there are alot of ways to be emo...

Mattman is so emo that i think its funny hes bashing emo people...

Who am i...i don't know anymore...its been a long time since ive walked here...

Heh. Totally different area then. I see very few well-to-do emos around here. And 'rebelling' against the 'system' refers more to punks than emos, you know

emo is short for emotional, they don't necesarily dress in black, but they style their hair to look like they didnt style their hair, they mope about life, and will always stand or sit in a depressing/apathetic pose, that never looks at the camera >>

they write blogs about how woeful their life is, and how things are bad. They are nothing but whingers, and they call themselves emo, which is actually a derrogative term, only to perpetuate their own self dissappointment image. Emo's and Goths are both stupid.

I dont think theres any one definition of emo, really nowadays "emo" is just what someone says to someone they dont like.

Ian I would totally agree but Im in a family full of musicians and ant stand it when I hear some people on the radio making millions of dollars with some "half assed" song that anyone with 3 weeks of guitar experience could play... Of course im in the minority, but its the same when you hear some lame rap beat that probably took some dude 5 minutes to make, and your thinking "I couldve been 10k richer". Same concept really. I can only stand to listen to good musicians, or vocalists in some cases. Theres just not anyone around like jimi hendrix or eddie van halen with that raw uber guitar skill... Or freddie murcury with that raw uber vocal skill... So i listen to al the dead guys ....

Dont let me hate on yo music. Im music retarted.

I'm emo myself, but you guys got it all wrong >_>
They don't necissarily dress like goths, well, I don't at least. AND I sure don't listen to music because I'm depressed. I'm only an emo because:

I did as a teenager. It was annoying as people kept finding/stopping me and therefore assuming it was a "cry for help" "he wanted to be found" etc whereas actually I just had no frickin privacy. Of course nowadays I'm very glad I failed, life's never that bad to make it worth it, suicide is the cowards way out
