I'm curious so I thought I'd do a survey.

If you play and/or are learning a musical instrument, please post and let us know what you are playing.

For my part: saxophone - alto saxophone to be exact.

Cheer if you like bears! Cheer if you like jam sandwiches!

Guitar for me.

Saxophone eh? That's pretty cool. I like these jazzy sax solos that you hear about the place.

Piano, some guitar---

In school I played trombone and tuba.

I'm seriously considering purchasing a theremin for the prize of most unique instrument

A few months worth of guitar, just enough to learn some basic chord and melody stuff, only song I learned was the Back in Black riff and Doobie Brothers' China Grove.

My main instrument is piano, which I've been studying for 10 years.

I play Alto Sax in the Marching band (fall) and Wind Ensemble in spring (top band w00t).

I also know a little Oboe( ), hoping to get into symphony orchestra next year with that.

If it counts I'm also taking formal theory & comp lessons.

I play(ed) alto sax, and violin, and before sax I used to play clarinet. I'm about grade 5 in sax and violin, though I haven't had lessons for over two years (stoped when I went to sixth form)

Guitar, Keyboards, Piano, Trumpet/Cornet, Drums, Trombone, Flute, tin/penny whistle, Various Accordians, I could probably go on. The recurring theme there is "only averagely well"

i use to play the trumpet, can't remember what grade i got to, but i didnt like it all that much, its not a very good instrument

[edit]i also do vocals quite well, i used to be really good but i havent practiced properly in ages

Quote: "So, is this some funky european thing, or do us lowely americans have it too?"

Dunno. We have music examining boards where you study to gain a certain grade in an instrument. You usually have to pass an exam playing 3 pieces, listening tests, answering qs on your pieces etc.

1-3 are piss easy.
4-5 are moderately hard
6-7 is hard
8 is highest.

You can also get a performer's certificate which is extremely hard.

Ahhh... there's 14 grades here. I think. I'd go filtch my mum's guidebook and see, except she's teaching right now

I'm not really certain about the requirements for grade 12 (what I'm on), it might have a couple of black key scales but I don't think so. I can play e flat, c sharp, f sharp, and b flat minors on two octaves (e flat on four), in case anybody's doubting my uberness on teh piano

Once you are grade 8 in the Uk you are allowed to teach it to official standards The grade system is semi pointless though other than "proving" you can do something, as it usually consists of learning a particular peice and practicing it over and over until you know it by heart. Standard Music A level is like that too, unless you do an alternative course. In my opinion studying a single peice to that level is more "comprehension" ratehr than "music" - hense why I learned to read music, and also play by ear by myself after getting frustrated with repetition in lessons for grades... the only thing I percevered with grades in was reading music, to "prove" my worth to various teachers...

I tried to get out of scales all I could. I think for piano grade 3 I had to do f sharp major, two octaves. That was pretty cool actually.

Im in 3 bands, but 2 i didnt know about >,>. Funny how people claim to have people theyve never heard play in there band thats never practiced together before. What really sucks is that one of them is an emo band...

Upright bass? That is freakin' sweet!

That grade system sounds interesting. Here you j ust sort of practice, and then go compete. I know F# major...as many octaves as you need. What are some of the other requirements like?

A lot of things that have keys, some things that have strings, sometimes I also have fun hitting stuff with sticks (although I'm not very good at that), the tin whistle ("left-handed" though), and I like to sing.

Some of the other cool instruments I've experimented and tried to learn over the years: Jawharp (hard to get used to, fun to play), harmonica, and banjo.

But now I've got my sights set on a theremin. Anyone else like these?
