Hello everyone. Just wanted to know how many (if any) of you are in the process or are thinking about writing an adventure in the style of mankey island et al. I am actually on the verge of starting something along these lines but (as you do...) want to totally revolutionise the whole genre (although not in the same way as "Phantasmagoria"... LOL). Anyway the point is, if anyone has actually tried this, you get halfway through and realise you aint going to get any fun outta testing it and indeed playing it when its finished: you already know all the plot advances etc so theres no enjoyment. I guess what im trying to say (in a very long-winded and roundabout, beat about the bush kinda way...) is has anyone else got any in the pipeline that we could play and enjoy and maybe revive the genre with??? The MI series, along with Broken Sword, Day of the Tentacle etc, all of them, they were really great games, with value for money by the bucketload. Even the ones that were considered slightly lower quality, such as Simon the Sorcerer, certainly gave me much enjoyment. So come on guys, give me something to enjoy once again! Anyones comments on this topic would be very welcome. Tatty Bye

from what i know... no one
however if you decide to make one, then i'm sure it'll be a VERY welcome change to "oh i'm making the next final fantasy!" or "oh i'm making the next Halo"

personally one of the best and sadly now dieing breed of games
but we all eagerly await Full Throttle 2

actually you've now got me thinking how cool it would be to have a point'n'click ... Ahhh no the noltalgia ...
ack i'm gonna have to throw in Discwold just to hold myself over ... DAMN YOU

And I never intended to make the next halo, the next final fantasy(which woz s***te), the next command and conquer.

The problem is that for the story I want to tell I chose the most suitable format available.

As a developer (though not a professional one) I don't want to make the next ANYTHING I try to be as original as I possibly can...though it is tempting to use already great-and-proven ideas now and then.

I am a pretty big fan of the "click and point" genre, ever since i played Maniac Mansion on my Commodore 64 and then playing Monkey Island 1 & 2 on the Amiga 1200.
I played the old Simon the Sorceror too and thought it was alright.

I've played quite a few, but i think the worst click and point game i ever played was "Blazing Dragons" on the Playstation, and i secretly enjoyed it too.

It would be good to see someone create a C&P adventure, but most C&P games, if not all have a large element of humor in it, so which ever person or team decides to make one, please be funny

The Problem there is, for a Point & Click Adventure, the people needed most are graphic artists. The programming part in an adventure game like Monkey Island is very very easy (it sure wasn't that easy before the invention of Lucas Arts SCUMM, think of the old Larry games, the parser programming knowledge needed for this kinda stuff is high level...), but where do you get all those graphic artists needed for such a project? When I decided to become a programmer, I dreamed about creating my own Monkey Island, Simon the Sorcerer, Zack McKracken or whatever.

So, if anyone here wants a cool, funny, oldskool Click 'n Point adventure game, and is good at graphics, just say it and let us make the dream come true
It is possible, look at the team developing Broken Sword 2.5, they even got help by the developers of the original game. ZackMcCracken 2 is also a good example, it looks great, feels like the original...

That's the question. Should it be pixel art, or cartoon style like Monkey Island 3 or Runaway? I like the pixel ones more. Sure, the technic is out dated, but it looks better. When Monkey Island 3 was released, I hated the new Cartoon Style, but I played it a few times. When Monkey Island 4 was released, I bought it, got me to play it for an hour and stopped. I couldn't play it anymore. It isn't Monkey Island, it is something different. Simon the Sorcerer 3, as another example. Wouldn't it be better if they made it in 2D?

If you want to make a good old fashioned adventure game, then check this out: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk

It's a good free tool to make sierra/lucasarts style 2d adventure games.

i liked MI4 ... however that isn't a point'n'click really - and i agree there is something about MI3 which never sat right with me either.

best 2 P&C games ever made were Manic Mansion2: Day of the Tenticle (which i thought was cool how it also had Manic Mansion 1 as a secret game in the game somewhere) and the truely classic Sam & Max hit the Road

i'd love to see this kinda game be made, and i know that its mostly for the task of a 2D Artist - but there are actually quite a few who are 'attempting' (and i use the term loosely) to work in 3D now, i'm sure you could conjol one of them to help do the artwork

i know alot of professional artists actually who'd jump at the chance to do the animation/artwork for such a project

Gabriel Knight, Lesuire Suit Larry, Space Quest, Kings Quest, The Dig, Indiana Jones FOA, Full Throttle, Monkey Island, Quest for Glory (I might do one of these sooner or later), Phantasmagoria ... I miss games like those on a daily basis. They had ambience, they had plot, if they weren't so friggin' fun to play, they'd be worth crap to me now. But something brings me back... I'd love to see more of these, but no major companies would do this, because they know it's not going to rake in as much as cutting-edge games. Sad Inject it into my VEINS!!!! I would LOVE to help on a project like this (3d art or programming, maybe even plot) when I'm done with this medieval multiplayer thing i've got going. Like I said, a Quest for Glory game would be great ... same style ... but the series seems to have fallen from my favor after the third (best in my opinion). Anyone else like QFG (want to help me in about a year or so to remaster it...)?

P.S. This is what the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

flight of the amazon queen (and really if i wanted to i can think of almost 30 titles right now) ... they were a popular genre back in 88-94

after that was quake country and the 3D revolution

Ay, I love the QFG series, especially QFG 2 and 3, they totally sucked me in (still own them all, just gotta install win98 on my old machine and play them again..sweet). I also liked Sam 'n Max, Day of the Tentacle, The Dig, Monkey 1 & 2, SQ 1 to 4, Gold Rush, Manhunter 1 & 2 (those games are seriously underrated), Beneath a steel sky and probably alot more that I'm forgetting at the moment.....

Sequel to Sam n Max or Tentacle please!

Actually I have got about halfway through a conversion of Cosmic Spacehead which was a cool (but short) point n click from Codemasters Its not my priority to finish it, but one day I will

I suppose the closest thing to point and click adventures we tend to get are Resident Evil clones or rpgs - its hardly the same tho. Nothing beats the achievment of getting an amusing response when entering "talk to : wall" or "eat : traffic attendant"

Point & Click are still going strong - look at Syberia - The graphics were advanced but still point and click and fun.

If it ain't broke - try harder.

I used to have Cosmic Spacehead on my Megadrive, but it just didn't feel right with it being part click and point and part platform.
Maniac Mansion is probably my fav after playing it really young. I used to get aload of friends round, set up the C64, turn the lights out and play for hours. We were only young and we didn't get all that far, but it was still cool.
I remember playing it for the first time, i couldn't figure out how to get in the house and it was annoying me, so i started messing around and clicked "Pick up: Door Mat" and lo and behold there was the bloody key

point'n'click are only still going strong cause of guys'n'girls like us

you get an adverage play off the street now and they don't like them even slightly... the formula really has to be changed cause they're all to use to photorealisim and instant action rather than thoughful and insane problem solving - like attaching a 10day old sock to a fishing rod and using over a gorge to catch a sashquash

Speedhorn - I didn't like the megadrive versions cos they put in the platform bits there to make the game longer and it ruined continuity. My version has no platform bits

The best version was prolly the MasterSystem /
Game gear versions cos the graphics were good but still clear (the 16bit versions were a lil fuzzy) and you could turn the platform bits off

lol @ Raven - in Cosmic you need to get across an area called the "cool pool" and when you look at it it says "the water is nearly freezing" - to walk across it you use "icing" sugar

@Klukk: I know AGS, and a few other programs to make P 'n C Games, but I never would use one of those for a game. It is okay to license an engine for a big project like a 3d Action Game, but an adventure game engine is easily coded and it is better when you do it by yourself, because you know every part of the engine and you can add many more features, that a licensed engine wouldn't have.

There are a few new point 'n click games, some of them are good, but I didn't saw anything that even got close to Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Simon the Sorcerer 2 (part one wasn't one of my favorites...). The only good "new" p 'n c games IMHO are Broken Sword 1 and 2 and the Feeble Files. That was a funny game

PS: Beneath a steel sky was really a great game. I played it due to its freeware release for the first time one year ago.

Y'know, i hoped i could get this sort of reaction! Especially since i caught the attention of people such as Raven to post their comments. Cheers for taking the time to add your comments guys. I agree that Day of the Tentacle is probably the greatest adventure ever written and also look forward with baited breath to the next instalment of Full Throttle. I cant help but feel that some changes will be made to the structure however in an attempt to appeal to 'the masses'. And Speedhorn hit the nail right on the head by saying they need to be funny. Definateley a valid point...

By the way, when i said i was trying to make something similar, i meant totally different...!

Dont suppose anyone has played the old,old game 'Personal Nightmare'? I had it on me decrepit old Amiga and found it amazingly chilling and tense. Of course, returning to it lately as a programmer it seems very limited and half the options i thought were open to me actually arent. But it was the atmosphere this game portrayed that kept me coming back for more. I never finished it but kept starting again and again as it seemed i was free to solve it any way i pleased. But this is it: imagine a horror game along these lines where you CAN actually do whatever you want. I'd buy the bugger...

Flight of the Amazon Queen... That was a great game. Also there were some funny semi adult ones in cga (not LSL). I did manage to be at LSL's wake though(it was a small room of people at GDC a while back). Its sad that there will most likely be another game. I had the honor of speaking with Al Lowe a bit at Larry's wake and he was all bummed that Larry never got a chance to go 3d. I miss those products.. well time to play Grim Fandango when I get home. I never got a chance to really play it.

pug one upgrade over the original will be the realtime barfights ... and it uses the same engine as MI4 (so no doubt a few will think eck)

but to be honest i do sorta prefer its style of console control, but at the same time i wish i had a mouse pointer to go over the screen whenever i wanted to check what was there

Who did the voice in the original Full Throttle? Someone told me "Luke Skywalker" did it ... and they also said he did the Joker in the original Batman cartoons. Anyone know anything about this?

Roy Conrad was the actor for the lead character. He did pass away last year. Mark Hamil (Luke Skywalker) does voice over work now since he cant act under normal situations . He was another character in Full Throttle but not the main one.

Coolness, sad to hear that the original voice actor died though Poor Mark Hamil ... he's been typecast way too bad.
