How large of a bitmap cant the texture for a matrix be?

In the frist DB it was only 256x256. Has that increased?

OIr better yet, can every tile have its won texture?

no on 3DFX-I and 3DFX-II and similar cards the limit was 256x256 - there was no limit imposed by DBC and neither is there by DBPro.

The limiting size of a texture is not DB, but the graphics card that the .exe is being run on. Some have a maximum total dimension and some insist on square textures, the bigger you go the more likely you are to exclude older cards.

512x512 is considered by many to be an accepteable texture size that works on most cards.

It would be very nice if DB terrains/matrixes supported multi-texturing and multiple texture images. Until they revise the landscaping tools in patch 5-6 or 7, we'll just have to stick it out with matrixes.

Wow, thanks for quick reply.

512x512 just isn't enough for good looking, varied terrain.
And I dont want to deal with making and tranking tons of textures

"Until they revise the landscaping tools in patch 5-6 or 7, we'll just have to stick it out with matrixes."

So this is a feature that is definitely coming?
Any idea how long that would be?

Well i've heard it mentioned that DB where going to look at the terrain command set and make some changes - i've not personally witnessed any official confirmation.

I too find 512x512 far too limiting for matrix textures and ignore that theoretical limit and keep increasing mine until my graphics card has trouble displaying anymore - but I find even my cards maximum texture size too limiting (64 tiles at 256x256).

For a terrain system that does not support multi-texturing it is important to get as many different tiles down as possible to create the scenic diversity and the edge blending.

I would dearly love to see multiple textures for matrii to do this but as that's not an option i'm now just holding out to see what the DB team does with the terrain commands before re-writting the matrix functions of my program to a different way of working.
