ok, so if your browsing this fourm, your probably a "geek". But, what is a geek really.

a person that spends unhealthy time on the computer
a very smart person
a person with no social life

Sure thats what probably comes to mind when someone says "geek", but is geek really a bad thing? I mean, most of us have friends, if not local at least cyber pals . And are you really very absentminded? i mean, could you tell me what today is without looking at the calander(sp?)? and can pc time actualy be unhealthy? The harmfull physical affects are:

screen radiation
eye and hand strain
muscle loss

ect.

but, it is a tool after all. What about strength? are you a wimp? or are you perfectly fit?

just something that iv'e been thinking about, mindless rambling mostly...

at school i only know the date after i have asked someone, and i only know what day it is by what books i packed in to my bag the previous night; during the holidays i cant tell you what day it is without consulting my computer screen or watch

Quote: "The harmfull physical affects are:

i have tft monitors so th4e first one doesnt apply, eye and hand strain i get sometimes and muscle loss actually requires you having muscles in the first place

i'm a bit of a wimp, but i do have good strength considering that i have only worked out once, and to "perfectly fit" your joking arent you?

nerd = a technology proficient person, knowledgible and smart.
geek = similar to a nerd, but probably lives in parents basement, never have had a real gf, and is into all the tech fads.
dork = Thinks they are knowledgible because they watch/read a lot of sci-fi. Sometimes called Trekkys. Think of a teeny bopper, but instead of glued to MTV, its the SCI-FI channel. Their social lives are less promising than a geek's. They usually stick to their own groups, often found hundled around small tables in the lounge areas playing Magic or D&D.

Quote: "but, it is a tool after all. What about strength? are you a wimp? or are you perfectly fit?"

i can bench close to 200lbs and run a 1/4mile in 1 min. I skate every chance I get and used to work out daily. After my defintions from above, I might sound arrogant if I say I'm more nerd than anything though. But I've never seen a whole star wars movie and generally dont like the popular sci-fi shows.

ha i am on the computer alot and have several game dev projects underway, but i still have lots of time for socialization and my girlfriends who thinkgs that programming is cute. yea i said it. I dont really like sci fi stuff alot and star wars is a great film but i could care less about what actually happens in the movies, i like it because its shot well and has a good score thats mased off of gustav holsts "the planets" that was made in the 1800's i think. I like game dev as an art, coding can byte my @ss I do it for the music and the modelling and so forth... I still consider myself an artist.

P.S. did you guys catch the clever pun? Byte, get it? hahaha... ha..

I think "Geek" is rather hard to narrow down. It certainly isn't only computer related. Geek is a personality type. Definatly not physical. Can't really say "Geek has pale skin, acne, fat/thin, smells bad," etc as you would have no idea who's a geek or not if you saw them on the street. (Unless they're wearing an "All your base belong to us" shirt.)

So whoever here says "I'm not geek"? Don't kid yourself, you're posting on "Geek Culture" on a programming forum.

I'm a geek

I tick so many of the boxes - roleplayer (CRPG,P&P AND LARP), sci-fi/fantasy reader, bedroom-coder, anime watcher, computer based job, possess several games-related t-shirts, and I own my very own soldering iron

I lose so many geek points for being a girl though. Some 'tests' automatically disqualify you for it

Sometimes I class myself as a Chixx0r (when I'm feeling silly), sometimes a G3 (girl gaming geek) but generally I'm a geek. Never got on well with the word 'Nerd' - I don't care about all the definitions out there - the word just sounds worse than Geek.

Geeks aren't always computer people. There's music geeks/nerds. I thought nerd was the negative term and geek the positive term though.

I'd say a geek is another word for an 'intellectual'. Anyone who is interested in anything to do with science, computers, maths, politics, economics, philosophy, etc. etc., is a geek. There are extreme geeks, but these are not neccesarily nerds. Many people who like playing mmorpgs, playing war games, programming (haha), star wars, star trek, etc, are often completely friendly and socially ept people (though sometimes not).

A nerd is someone who smells bad, has very limited social skills and a non-existent fashion sense. Usually nerds have geek-like characteristics, but geeks don't have to be nerds, and nerds don't have to be geeks.

@Hamish- really? i always thought of those two words exactly the opposite... (my nerd is your geek and my geek is your nerd)

Quote: "Never got on well with the word 'Nerd' - I don't care about all the definitions out there - the word just sounds worse than Geek. "

really? i like Nerd better then geek, and call myself one commonly...

but really i'd say i'm a Geeky Nerd. (by my definitions, not hamish's )

I would say I am a geek. I love Star Wars, but Star Trek is much better for me and i'm interested in science.

But I also have good social life and lot of friends and just 3 or 4 my friends know that i am interested in programing and modeling.

I think the whole no social life thing acctually helps with social life, gives you kinda like having an air of mystery. I think that most nerds have that kinda tippidy tappedy kinda walk I don't walk like that I have this weird swagger. Acctually I think it's to pronounced because people always think I'm drunk when I walk because I swing alot. The drunk part may or maynot be true. That was pointless.

In my opinion, what code master says is a geek is actually a nerd. A geek might have the first two elements, though. In other words, a nerd has no social life (except perhaps with other nerds), and a geek is... Well, I don't really know what a geek is, but I consider myself to be one. And I'm considered to be cool by some people (but it's mainly the Asian chicks, not that there's anything wrong with that).
I say geek is just... Something to describe someone, not really as an insult, that's what nerd is.
Oh, and I'm slightly underweight but by no means a wimp.

Nerds < geeeks methinks.

Many people know I program, but they don't really see it as geeky, they think I'm smart and cool and such. Though I do hang out with a lot of honors kids/geeks/bandies.

I'm not sure if I would classify myself as a geek. I mean I spend 1/2 of the day on the computer and am smart. But I also do lots of glamour shots so it sort of levels it out.

lol, same here . Only my family knows, and maybe 1-2 friends, but like you I keep those details to myself, but, surprisingly the people I do eventually let it slip on think its cool . I think I'd consider myself more a nerd than a geek, I'm not incredibly social, but I'm no social outcast, and I talk a lot to friends and people I know. I'm pretty smart, but not a genius, but the computer is most of my life, don't know what I'd do without it . But, I'm only a teenager, and I plan on going to college, getting married, living in a house, starting my own game company , all that good stuff, I definitely don't plan on living in my parents basement and being on the computer my whole life, lol .

They don't make wimps in New York. In the words of my uncle Jerome, "Take a seventh grader from Brooklyn and put him in a room with the ten toughest guys in Kentuky and watch who comes out alive." He said that to some out-of-town hillbilly with a confederate flag on his jacket, one of the funniest moments I've ever witnessed lol.

I've often wondered if I'm a geek. Let's see:

I eat, breath, sleep, ****, dream, make, and live video games, so in that realm, I'm a geek

I've often had outrageous and verbally violent (and on one occasion, physically violent) arguements debating that Radiohead is the greatest band in the history of ever and they rule everything and everyone ever in the history of ever. Yep, I'm a geek there

I have an article posted on my website about who would win in a fight: the Terminator versus the Predator... pretty geekish.

I'm an avid politics junky and love debating in favor of the democrats (liberals think I'm a hero, conservatives? They think I'm a geek)

I'm in love with the PT Cruiser (which means that if I didn't have a girlfriend, I'd never get any action, and that's the story of many a geek's life)

I'm addicted to HBO (final season of the Sopranos coming soon, both a "woot" and a at the same time)

But on the flipside, I hate Star Trek, I can't recite Star Wars word-for-word, and I'm not into RPG's because I can't get down with dragons, wizards, and all that jazz... although Fallout frickin' ruled and that was an RPG, and I dig the earlier Final Fantasy games (but not as much as most others). So I'm undecided whether or not I'm a geek

EDIT: PS., if those are really pictures of Grace, then I'm actually Lee Bamber in disguise. Unless they really are, in which case I need further evidence

From years of judging character and meeting different kinds of people, I realize that people who say "Dude i'm not geek I work out everyday/got into xx amount of fights/hate starwars" then guess what? You're a f*cking insecure geek.

I don't hide any of my ambitions. I love a ton of geeky things, even though I dislike startrek/starwars. But I don't go around saying
"HEY GUYS I TRAIN IN LETHAL MARTIAL ARTS AND I BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF PEOPLE ON REGULAR OCCASIONS!" just to show how UN-geek I am even if it was true.

Get over it guys. You can be a ripped 250lb guy with 3 girlfriend, just stop bloody reminding us of it.

Uh, Megaton? My post was sarcastic, lol. I'm not the kind of guy who gets beat up often (well, ever), but I only said that New Yorkers are known to be tough because Code Master originally said:

That doesn't make since . My parents DO know, and they are supportive of it , and, like i said, I think I'm more a nerd than geek . I just don't like going around talking about how I make video games and plan to own my own video game making company one day .

Hey, it's a known and statistical fact that 7 out of 10 people between the ages of 4 and 88 who live in Brooklyn ARE a bunch of tough drug-dealing gangsters! Well, that's just Brownsville, but there's only two places in NY you'll find wimps: The Village and Chelsea

Oh yeah, and Albany. Friggin' punks

EDIT: Oh yeah, and most of Long Island (everything east of Queens)

EDIT #2: Oh yeah, and most of upstate NY north of the Southern Tier

EDIT #3: Okay fine, it's not true! I confess! Are you happy Now!?!
