WELCOME To the Open Source MMORPG Project. To get the ball rolling, let’s start off this thread with a few screen shots of our WIP RPG Demo game.

Okay, now that you can see some work has been done, let me take a moment to tell you some of the cool things we have in store for you!

>RPG Oriented Code
>>AI
>>Terrain
>>LOD
>>Combat
>>Quests
>Models
>Music
>Sound Effects
>Textures
>Website
>>Forum
>>Wiki

Okay, enough boring stuff, here is some more eye candy.

Not enough? Want to check out the Demo? You got it! Click here to get to the demo (working demo, not release demo), and enjoy. Then come on back and see some more of what we have in store!

[http://www.ommorpg.vectramedia.net/index.php?topic=153.msg2529#msg2529]Intro and Demo[/url]

Demo Only

User="guest", Password="password"

Welcome back! Now that you’ve seen all the work, I’m here to tell you this is just the beginning!
Phase One is an RPG Demo. Just to validate that we have what it takes to put together an RPG.
Phase Two is a full RPG. Make no mistake, this will be big. Okay, maybe not Daggerfall big, but, big.
Phase Three will be to convert the RPG to an ORPG for about 8 players.
Phase Four will be an MORPG that can host over 200 players.
Phase Five will be to convert the MORPG to an MMORPG.

Gah! It’s time for another screen shot! Of course, if you played the demo, you probably don’t need 'em.

Here’s the icing on the cake! It’s all Open Source! You think you can make it better? Go right ahead. Grab whatever you want and make your own M/M/O/RPG. Of course, what could be better than that? Join our team and LEARN how to make a DB Pro M/M/O/RPG along with us. We could certainly use the help, and we help you out in return. Not convinced? Okay, here’s a few more screen shots.

So, I bet you are asking, what do you get out of joining this project? Well, the pay is great if you like to work for free. You get credit on the final project [your name here]; after all, this is history in the making! And just for reading this post this far down, here’s a parting gift: two more screen shots!

I lied, one more.

Hi Pro g r amer, our source is all kept on the internet on source control - you can find instructions for downloading all the source (and an exe) at the bottom of that thread that was linked to.

We use source control, so that people can check out code, and then upload it for everyone to get the latest version of. It means that people can make changes to the code, and know that they're working on the very latest version (and people can say what version they found bugs in). Pretty much any big project will benefit from using source control.

It uses Subversion software and that thread we linked to (the third post in, at the bottom) tells you how to get it and all our code/media.

A web version (so you can see the code) is also available to view at this link here. It will ask you for a username and password, please use "guest" and "password" for just now

I'm sorry we don't have just a straight up download for you, but with the source changing so often, it's much better to do it this way for just now. Chances are, the code will be different and improved by tomorrow

Look on the bright side - usually, projects only provide the exe, we give you the entire source

[edit] Darn, I tried to link to a particular post in a thread, but Apollo doesn't seem to support links with the # symbol in them. Poo.

It's not an April Fool's joke, we've been working on this for some time now (had our 6 month anniversary recently). I'd mentioned about our choice of date, but we went ahead anyway.

Thanks Peter_, sett, Seppuku, pro g r amer, zzz (great work on Soul Hunter!) and Megaton for the comments and interest so far.

The weapons were worked on by myself, Nevereverend, D-Eagle and others There's a lot of models available

lol. A serious attempt at a MMORPG. I never thought I´d see this day. There´s something ironic about today being April Fools say. ohhh open source. Even better. Must have a look at teh codez.

Eidt: No offence meant to other people making MMORPGs. I haven´t been looking at all the projects made with DBPro and so I don´t know if there are other serious attempts.

Need path finding in your games? Have a look at the tutorials on www.telefonica.net/web2/paskyprog/.

Ack! Matinuker, I'm so sorry I didn't mention you by name. I'd hoped I could get away without listing everyone who's worked on the models by saying "and others", but I know you've done a lot of the models we have. Sorry, my bad.

MiR: there's been quite a few MMORPG attempts around now, but this is the first Open Source one

Thanks for the comments everyone.

The next 20 people that sign up on OMMORPG forum win a free download/copy of source code, music, graphics of their choice from the Open MMORPG project.

In the demo, there is an .exe file for anyone that may not have DB Pro: Find the "Source" folder and look for the zip file. Extract the .exe file to the Source folder.

Not too bad, I hope. I've spent a bit of time getting the terrain to look decent and run decent, quite a balancing act. Anyway, the actual game, as opposed to the demo, will have smaller 'zones', so the terrain texture will be less 'stretched.'

Glad you final posted this. Interesting day though, .

I don't have time to download the demo at the moment, but I'm very interested to know; what will make this game so great? What about it will make me want to devote anywhere between 15-500 hours of my life playing it? What about it shale really be unique to this?

Ah, I see. Terrain can be challanging. Really, it's not that bad at all, I was just wondering. Your plan sounds good to me, great work!

Well, for me, so far... it's the cows. And the Old Grole Ale. Oh, and the rabbit stew.

Really? Great question! And it's one we have put off for now in favor of, what we feel, is a more important task. Being able to make a game in the first place.

The big picture on this project isn't so much the game, as it is the resources to make a game. When done, the plan is to have a decent product that folks will see as, at least, interesting. BUT (and that's one big BUT), we will have all the resources needed to make that really cool M/M/O/RPG. In the end, we, or anyone else, can sit down and plan out what will make a game so interesting to you, and others, that you will want to spend your time playing it. And that game can become reality.

In the mean time, the Old Grole Ale keeps most folks happy

What do the zones have to do with the texture size? You could create each zone as its own object so that the texture can be a normal fit for it....

@ Oneka:
possible use a sliced up terrain map as with the texture - this is used in LOA and will increase the overall terrai texture detail as when loaded

There will be... Promise.

Quote: "also use different characters then those because that dwarf we see in almost all MMORPG project here"

We so completely agree with you! We have more models, we just need them animated. We just got an animator on board, and I think we nearly scared him off with all the models we need animated. If anyone wants to help bone/animate the models, we could sure use the help. Otherwise, we will have to live with our friend the dwarf for a while.

Quote: "What do the zones have to do with the texture size?"

Didn't say the texture size would change. The scale of the AT object will be smaller, which means the texture won't be stratched out nearly as much. It's all relative.
Also, larger texture sizes slow down the FPS. And lastly, DBPro maxes out texture sizes to 5048x5048 (not sure I remember the size, but I know there is a limit), so even if you try for more detail, it won't load with more detail.

We really appreciate the interest in making this project look good. Please come on over and join the forum. Suggestions/advice here are great, but over on the Open MMORPG forum, we can discuss these at great lengths. After all, that's why we have it.

The Open MMORPG Project has many goals - to create an RPG, an ORPG, MORPG etc. It's also a teaching/learning project so that people can learn to make their own games of this type, and experience the wealth of knowledge that other users have. It's also to create a repository for both art and code (and music etc) that others can use in their games.

I'm not sure that's been done before in DB, but if it has, do let us know

This community is a Dark Basic community, and therefore are making it in dark basic, I'm sure the founder decided that DB is a good idea because he/she is a member of this community and know some people here (and probaly not the blitz community) it would also mean spending money out on another program and taking a lot of time to learn it, and now that the project has got so far, I say, whats the point restarting it now with a new language that is supposed to be easier for this sort of thing (add the fact you have to learn it, it kind of weights out)

And plus, why betray the community by converting to Blitz, its heresy I tell ya!

It's true, there are other very impressive WIP's and projects by others in the DarkBasic community - and believe me when I say that I have nothing but respect for the other projects out there - they've all faced challenges and bugs that we at the Open MMORPG project have either faced ourselves, or will in the future.

Some of those projects are further ahead than the OMMORPG project, others are a little further behind - and still others are still merely ideas in the minds of potential MMORPG makers of DB. More power to them all!

However, we're trying to do this Open Source - so that anyone can have access to the code, art, music and experience of making one of these huge games. That's a little different from some of the other projects.

This is a community project - everyone's free to come along and help or learn from the rest of the project. We're not making a team request, but we accept assistance when it's volunteered.

This is also a learning project - learning what DB (and with as little reliance on outside DLLs as possible) is capable of. That means not just multiplayer - but graphically, size wise, gameplay wise and any other percieved limitations that are accepted knowledge. Sometimes we find out that there are things that DB just doesn't like doing - but it's better to find that out for certain.
It's also learning to code or model better for each of our members - or learning to help guide a team, or learn to do HUD graphics, or learning how to use source control - or any number of things.

Personally, I've learned LOADS from this project already - previously, I'd never have touched AI with a bargepole, but from learning from the OMMORPG project, I've written state-machine needs based herbivore AI that gets hungry, looks for food and eats it. I've made cows and sheep and fantasy creatures behave in a relatively realistic manner - and I'm very glad to have learned that. I've written a tutorial on how to write your own state-based needs AI - it's on the OMMORPG forum. I learned, and then I tried to teach others.

I'm not trying to be overly defensive, after all - all you did was state that you thought there might be a better language for making a MMORPG in, and that's your right However, using DB is pretty much a defining aspect to this project, and we'll not be changing to something else.

So here's to free code, art and RPG's, all in DB!
