Hey

Basically there is a RAM (video) file on a BBC site which I would really like to download and keep for prosperities sakes - is there any software or method to do this, other than output it through my grfx card to my vcr, record it, then play it back and capture it on my tv card?

I don't know how RAM files work exactly, but it seems they just offer a link to a stream so just downloading the actual *.ram does no good at all. I have tried looking in My temporary files also and cannot see any form of file stroed there. If I am wrong on this some1 help me out please!

I searched on Google and it appears such software exists but Real is trying to quash all links to it I can understand why, but in this instance its a shame, as the file I want is hardly ripping anybody off, its just the Dannii Minogue interview where she answered my question I just want it so I can watch it again in the future, I don't wanna distribute it or anything... its not available for sale anywhere and I doubt the BBC would bother sending me a video for free either

Search the net for "Streambox VCR". I tried an early version and it worked quite well. Was a bit slow, though.

Ogres have layers.

Just use a screen capture program which allows you to define a screen region to capture.

You could unlink RAM files from RealPlayer, and try and download as a normal file. I think the BBC stop that kind of thing though...

Why the hell do the BBC use Realmedia? It is slow, inefficient, buggy and has an annoying systray app. Considering the only competition they face is the OK, but not brilliant Windows Media Player they should at least be able to come up with something as good.

Hey thanx man - that got it!

And yes I hate realplayer - many of my pcs seem to crash with it anyway - I always keep it uninstalled until every now and again I am forced to use it.

I would hazard a guess that the reason many companies use Real Player is that they are in affiliate payout deals. I may be wrong but I know that they do offer one.

I have tried many things, including capturing screen, without great success, but I have accidentally found a neat way to save ram files on the disk and watch them offline at will:

Copy the URL address of the ram file, open Windows Media Player, select Open URL in File menu and paste the address and wait till the buffering is complete. WMP will act quite stupidly. It won't actually be able to play the file but will let you save the file in a .rm format on an other hand, which is a physical file you can chew on. If you double click on that file, RealPlayer will play it even offline.

I have tried to convert the file from .rm to .avi with rm converter but the file size increased by ten times with slight compromise on quality.
