I guess I should have fixed the model lighting tonight. That's Psionic's dwarf, the same model that every single RPG/MORPG/MMORPG/MDPGDRPG in this forum uses. It's really a great model, and he's such a staple here I just had to include him.

Sorry, didn't feel like reading through all 9 pages.

I downloaded the thing from the first post, but it won't run.

The interface.exe gives me an error saying

I created the initial landscape with Strata Works. It's not WYSIWYG, but the texture generation is very good.

Since then, I've heavily modified both the heightmap and the texture in PSP to fit with the game.

Note to everyone : Landscape Creator is totally worthless. Don't buy it. I did, and I still used Strata Works for my game. Same with with Synergy editor. I use CodeSurge.

Quote: "Yeah I dont like him either, well not because so many people use it, but because hes a dwarf..And I dont like things like elves dwarves etc etc "

Even though he's been heavily abused, it's a great model. The only reason I'm going to use him is because I've got so many other characters, and he'll fit in nicely. Now, I'm not going the whole generic route of 'Dwarf'. He can just be the vertically challenged Brigand Chief. He'll have short man syndrome, and a bit too much liquor in him.

Quote: "I downloaded the thing from the first post, but it won't run."

That's really odd. Was it version 1.56? The 21 mb download?

The only reason I can guess right off had is that you tried to run the EXE while it was still zipped up. I do that occasionally by accident, because it looks like a folder in Windows XP. If that's not it, sorry, but like I said, that's an error that shouldn't happen, and you're the first to report it.

*****************

I'll have a demo out soon. I need to stress test it on slower systems and make it ultra compatible. I have a few more key features to add, but it will probably be in a week. However, at the risk of spoiling the game for everyone, I think it will be a closed test.

I unzipped it and ran it, and got that error.

I then upgraded to the latest version of DarkBasic Pro, and tried again, but got the same error.

I use Windows XP, 1.9 gigahrtz Pentium 4 processor, and have 256 mb of RAM.

The interface.exe is 31 megabytes when unzipped.

Only problem with that script is that it will always say the same thing forever, until this project is ancient

Here's the result of a night's work. I got Static Objects implemented, and I've assembled a few things around the map. More to come, of course, and ignore the framerates. I've got a ton of stuff in the background.

Static Objects might not sound like anything at all, but I needed them, and I just didn't have them implemented before. Instead, I was classifying them as a building, which works, but has more overhead as the system has to process the buildings every couple of loops. So now, all is good.

Next things, I'll be adding more stuff to the world, and I'll fix the problem of items in stories above the player not disappearing. I've thought about it for a while, and I've got the perfect answer.

@Wolf Dreamer-
I sure wish I knew what to tell you. That DLL is included in the executable, and is extracted to a temporary folder, then accessed. Apparentely, it's either not extracting properly, or it does not have access to that particular DLL. I just haven't had a problem reported before.

@Steve J-
That's some beautiful code you have there Of course, you know that this game will never be ancient. It will live forever. A cult classic, hopefully.

Hey cash, I noticed you still need night and day cycles, i have 2 suggestions, one i'm sure you know of, the other, i'm not sure.

1: You can get the eXtends plugin for the sky

2: I found a snippet in the code snippets forum (or was it the codebase?)

Anyways, great game, keep up the good work!

Can we ever get a pic with you not running all these things in the background? :o

Also, everything looks good, cept the fire looks alittle wierd...it looks like it is burning sideways...which I take it because you have it facing towards the camera..

I got it working now.

I had a file named ezrotate.dll in the system32 directory, and Windows always accesses things from there before anything else. Thus the problem. After moving it from that directory, I was able to run the program just fine.

Interesting use of a little yellow rubby ducky by the way. No serious adventure game should be without one. It'd be cool if that was an item, and you had a spell to make it grow very large, and then you rode on its back whenever you had to float across water.

When you click to move your character, if you hold the mouse button down in that direction, it moves faster than just clicking a spot and letting it walk over there. Is that done on intentionally?

Awesome! Glad to hear that it worked for you. Also, good for me to know, in case other people in the future have issues.

Haha. That's a wild idea. Not a bad one either. That could be part of some crazy escape puzzle...

Quote: "When you click to move your character, if you hold the mouse button down in that direction, it moves faster than just clicking a spot and letting it walk over there. Is that done on intentionally?"

Well, hard to say. Nothing was timer based in that version. Now it all is, so all of the speeds are stable now. So are the animations. I should have made it timer based, but I guess I was focused on other things. Some other core changes have been made now too. You might notice that you can be far away from some objects to move them, and really close to others. There was a bounding box problem with cloned objects. I've implemented a work around now. Also, I changed all of the 3D distance checks to 2D checks. Slightly faster, and less hassle pulling things off of a shelf or table.

Quote: "One day, I shall we holding aloft that blade and maiming those Japanese nasties. Tis my destiny."

I do that at least once a day. It's therapeutic

Nope, that's just the cloth/particles pack and some sweat. It's the same basis as I used in my cloth video.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to use Dark Physics for v1.x of my engine. I plan to release the editor and customers need to be able to redistribute their games without hassle.

In V2, the single release commercial version, I plan on integrating Dark Physics. But, first things first.

Looking damned good on that model! I can't wait until she's done.

games looking great . Out of curiosity, are you Japanese, or do you just live in Japan? Because if you are, I've never seen someone with English as their second language (which, if your really Japanese, I'm guessing it is) speak as perfectly and with such a large vocabulary in Englishas you do .

Oh, forever. Since I was a kid with my first C64, playing text adventures.

That knight is probably playing. True, he is a DarkMatter model. However, I doubt a Dark Matter model has ever seen the light of day in a commercial game. So, while you guys may know who he is, nobody else will.

Quote: "Out of curiosity, are you Japanese, or do you just live in Japan?"

Yeah, I'm Japanese. Born in Tokyo, moved to Okinawa when I was three. I've actually never left Japan either. I've only seen Americans on TV, or in the newspaper after they've been arrested for starting fights. All Japanese here can speak perfect English, Chinese, a little Korean, and of course, Japanese. It's just that you lousy Americans suck, and aren't educated, and fat. Sorry, that's just life

Cool, hehe. Sounds like you haven't seen much of the good side of American's in your lifetime . American's are educated, just most don't speak Japanese cause we don't need it (where I live it's mostly Spanish as a second language).

EDIT: So do you mean you've never seen an American in person?

Sorry I was speaking for the Japanese populace, if they weren't so polite. I'm an American jerk, born and bred in Texas. Sadly though, having been in so many other countries, I'm afraid that what I said about Americans is generally true. If there's crime here in Okinawa, you can bet it's an angry Marine trying to blow off steam, ending up in a fight or sometimes a murder. Native Koreans hate us and frequently organize demonstrations against the American military. Japanese are a much friendlier people though.

Quote: "Soon, I hope? Looking amazing! "

Soon! I'm two days off schedule for this week.

Actually, I got out of the military. My wife is on assignment here. I'm going to school full time, and trying desperately to make some games.

You should enter a competition. If you have DarkAI (I highly recommend it) you have a month left to finish something. It can be a mini RPG. Like, just inside of a building or something. I developed most of my core libraries during a competition. There's nothing like pressure to make you work, and work the right way.

If you're not interested in a competition yet, make an action adventure game. It can be 3D dynamic, or fixed sliding camera. You can have combat, power ups, dialog, etc. You'll be able to reuse tons of your code and ideas in your RPG. Just keep it simple and fun.

Also, you should accomplish everything as a mini project. I have a basic template. I copy that template into a new project, and write the bit of code I need to accomplish the task at hand. I have separate modules for terrain and environmental effects, interface, canversations, cloth, etc. I write the code so that I can just drop the new functions into my main project.

People too often get too ambitious with an RPG. They want to write an Uber-RPG right off the bat. They start with a huge world and a thousand trees and a little dude that can walk around, but not much else. At that point, program initialization is so slow that development is nearly impossible.

So, start small. After you've written a small RPG, you can scale it up. Just make your engine able to read the initialization variables from a file. LUA is great for that.

Quote: "oh and im making some INSANE rpg buildings. "

You should post them in the 3D forum some time. I bet they're awesome. I say 3D forum because they don't constitute a game just yet, but I know everyone would love to see them.

Good luck with it!

Let's not turn this into some political crap thread. I'm American, so I can say stuff like that. I'd never insult another country, so I'd appreciate if you didn't. I disrespect no group. I only condescend to individuals that have earned it. I hope you know that you have included me in the "dummiest people on earth."

Hey and before you comment, remember, all publicity is good publicity.

Right, clothes back on. Good use of cloth Cash! I had this idea it would be used for tapestries but as a curtain you walk through is pretty damn cool.

Looking better every day Cash. Do you sleep, eat, shower, or generally interact with the rest of the island, or are you just injecting caffine with an IV now? Not sure if it is something you could use, but I made this image for my RPG and may not use it now, feel free if it could be handy, maybe a painting on the wall or something. I cut out the parchment background I had on it so it might need a little cleaning.

Quote: "Cash, your game looks just so awesome! Will you release a demo soon or something?"

The game beta will be a closed test. If I released it too soon to the public, everyone would learn everything about the game too quickly and then they'd be tired of playing it by the time the final release comes out. I doubt everyone will feel like downloading 100 mb more than once But, I swear I'm getting close! I'm optimizing, cleaning up, etc.

Quote: "Right, clothes back on. Good use of cloth Cash! I had this idea it would be used for tapestries but as a curtain you walk through is pretty damn cool."

Haha. Good use of nudity I'm pretty excited about this cloth, since it works so well. I've got to give some good thought to the dynamic editor though, that's going to be a big challenge.

Quote: "not fast enough my dear simon, Ive already snapped these photo's of you and what appears to be Gil Galvanti..."

Oh... my.... Please note that I did not officially sanction, organize, or attend, this rally. I do have a concern, of course. I thought the Geisha House rally would have more... females... and less dudes. This needs some work

Quote: "Looking better every day Cash. Do you sleep, eat, shower, or generally interact with the rest of the island, or are you just injecting caffine with an IV now?"

My life is disintegrating around me. I haven't showerd in months... Haha, no. I'm still a mostly functional human being, but I'm getting down to crunch time, and I need to get this done. I'm half crazed. It's like a competition or something.

That portrait would fit perfectly in the game. I could mount him in a frame, probably in the tavern. I appreciate it!

Quote: "Are you even allowed to post stuff like that?"

Sure. The Geisha House thread is only subject to some rules of the AUP. Not the boring ones.

@Everyone except Lycrius -
Thanks for your support guys. Lycrius must be the Drew G of Finland or something. Glad he's gone, for now at least.

Everyone, here's A video. Not exactly THE video, but I'm behind. I definitely want to get this out though.

Bath House Demonstration, 7 mb

It shows some pretty cool stuff. Especially, the cloth is able to work correctly even at a low FPS (caused by Fraps). It's also much easier on the system than I thought it would be. I love it

And the music is a fantastic track that Fallout wrote just for Geisha House! It's an amazing song, perfect for this game

Enjoy! More soon!

Not that it is, but I've been getting the same feeling lately. Actually, I have to admit your work on this project continues to inspire me to work on the OMMORPG. Like it's a competition or something.

Edit: Drat! I shoulda bumped our thread last.

Wow, the cloth is really amazing! Personally I'd be very interested in seeing such an awesome effect used for some part of the gameplay as well, especialy after you put so much work into it. Maybe you could has parts where you hide behind curtains, or perhaps if an enemy gets stuck in them they're blinded and are less mobile until they get out? Perhaps there could be something where you have to wrap something it cloth. Just ideas, as it's a really amazing effect.

I have some suggestions though. Just aesthetic things, but you might want to look into them. The first was that when you went into the building, the roof just disappeared. Could you make it so that it fades away? Visually it would be much more appealing, and also it would keep the eye from being distracted by the sudden disappearance of something.

Also, not a big deal, but if you ever give the characters shadows, make sure they correspond to the lighting in the area.

Looking great Crash!

But about the streakers, considering that Cash just built his own awesome cloth effect, shouldn't the supporters be wearing really loose clothes? Wouldn't going naked be the same as boycotting the game?

I have followed this wip since you started and was so impressed, that I was basically speechless until now. I can no longer hold back the praise you so richly deserve. I don't normally kiss @ss, but sometimes it just has to be done. (glad thats over with)

Though I'm not working on a RPG and have basically been doing short projects, I am now ten pages into a fresh design document for a game.

Keep going strong

Glad you liked it! The spell names are actually adapted from Tolkien Sindarin. I developed my magic system, its rules, then the spells. Then I constructed the spells from various keywords, then I looked up the Sindarin equivalent for each word. I wanted something sort of original, but not cheesy.

Nah, it's not a competition, because in the end we both win I'm glad you you find inspiration in this project. Yours is definitely fantastic and inspiring.

Hey, that's how Geisha House does it. Except, hopefully, not a big sausage party...

Soon! I swear!!

@Bizar Guy -
Very cool ideas. I hadn't actually considered cloth obstructing an enemies view. Say for instance, you heard someone coming, you could duck behind a curtain. It could be a Dark AI sight obstacle. The obstacle wouldn't move around like the cloth, but it would be effective. They'd be able to walk right through it towards a sound, but they couldn't actually see anything.

I definitely don't want to overuse the cloth. Integrating it into gameplay more than that would probably have devastating effects. The Geisha House would catch on fire

I'll play around with the roof fading. I might have that as an optional thing. It would definitely look good doing that.

I might have shadows, or I might not. In order to use them correctly, I'd need to place hardware lights at all of the lightmap light spots. I guess it just depends on if I'm alive or not when the time comes.

Thanks for the feedback, and the fantastic ideas!

Well, I do appreciate you posting now Careful about kissing ass though, there appears to be many naked ones floating around this thread now...
