This is an eye opener alright.... got this in an email eariler this morning. Well worth reading.

WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzz short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

And now for the properties of COKE:

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway! after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.
Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a coke or a glass of water?

I try and drink lots of water, but constantly going for a piss isn't my idea of fun. And to turn the whole thing on its head, one of my housemates is a healthy chap - good diet, lots of exercise and he swears by drinking a good 2 litres of water a day. But he's become so dependant on it that if he isn't drinking water all the time, he gets headaches. His body is obviously used to be really hydrated and can't handle being dehydrated.

On the other side of the spectrum, sometimes I have a coffee in the morning and a coke in the evening and nothing else, and get through the day unscaved. I couldnt do that every day, but eh - I like my ability to function like a camel. I dont want to become dependant on drinking all the time and always having to be within 10 metres of a toilet.

Having said that, those benefits do seem quite tastey.

It's easy to drink tons of water in Arizona, especially in monsoon season.

Snopes doesn't say false, it just says that Coke is not harmful to the digestive system. Everything that has been quoted is still true.

Sure, it's not bad for your digestive system, it's just bad for your health in general. Soft drinks don't hydrate, it's as simple as that.

I quit drinking carbonated (soft) drinks about 4 years ago. I used to be quite addicted to Mountain Dew, and interestingly enough, I have absolutely no craving at all for any soft drinks. I actually think they taste disgusting now. I however really like Lipton's peach flavored iced tea. Yum!

So, yeah, it's water for me and while you guys are suffering from arthritis, I'll be out hiking, bike-riding and enjoying myself in my later life -- if I don't get hit by a drunk driver or something else first. I've found that if I've stayed up all night, I can usually survive the next day quite well by just drinking about twice as much water as normal. Oh, and I don't drink any coffee either. It smells too much like burnt beans.

I'm almost the exact same way hyrichter, I stopped drinking soft drinks a few years ago. All I drink now is spring/filtered water and the occasional soft drink, usually about once every few weeks. Coffee tastes bad, too.

Quote: "Carbonic acid is relatively weak,"

we know that, that's not the issue, its the phosphoric acid that is the stuff we are concerned about.
I used some coca cola and left a raw chicken bone in it for 2 days. the chicken bone weakened ,but the coke was quite old (past expire date) and hot, so i dont know if that was a good test.
however, nobody wonders why you feel that burning from soda if you leave it in the inside of you mouth?

In the military we'd use Coke to clean corroded battery terminals. It wasn't the greatest cleaner, but it would do it, especially if you had nothing else.

Also, if our BDUs (uniforms) were covered in mud, pouring a can of coke into the wash would help loosen the mud. Strange but true.

I'm a big water advocate. I hydrate while I drink alcohol. No matter how much I drink I don't get hangovers. I learned this because an Army recruiter told me that when he and his buddies would drink on work nights they'd give each other IVs to hydrate themselves and they'd feel fine the next day. Alcohol dyhydrates the brain slightly. I'm not hard core like that, so I just drink the water.

Water is great, just don't drink city-provided tap water, they put flouride in it, and you know what flouride does!

...Oh, you don't know? Have a look: http://www.fluoridealert.org/

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola. - TRUE

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. - TRUE

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes. - FALSE

Maybe we should have used Oxi-clean instead.
I think that it has some effect on the wash, it's a stout acid. Did it have NO effect, or just so little that they deemed it worthless?

Yeah, acid is all about concentration, like that article that BatVink suggested. You injest thousands of chemicals everyday that would kill you if you took them in pure form, but they are in such little concentration that your body can easily handle them.

I'm certainly not saying carbonated beverages aren't bad for you, they seriously dehydrate you. They cause your body to retain water instead of using it and letting it go through your system. This causes dehydration as well as pockets of stored water in your body that will form a layer, just like a layer of fat. Drinking water will flush your body out.

I drink a lot of water, but still drink soft drinks once in a while, sometimes a few in a day if I'm gaming with my friends or something. But then the next day I'll try to be healthier, balance it out. Pretty much everything in life is all about moderation in my opinion.

You know, there's two things. First up, your stomach acid will pretty much digest anything given enough time, so a bit of pissing coke acid isn't really gonna bother your stomach ... especially after a meal. In fact, I swear by the acidic agents in coke to help me digest my rump steak dinner. So seriously, if ya gut can handle it's own vicious acids which can digest a chewed up steak within 4-5 hours, then phospheric acid shouldn't really be an issue.

And secondly, people always say coffee and coke etc. are diuretics and won't hydrate you. I think that has to be false. Although I agree that they won't hydrate you as much as water, they don't remove more water than they put in. If they did, my mum would've been dead years ago seeing as pretty much all she ever drinks is really strong tea. I used to only drink coke, coffee and some milk here and there. I'm not a raisen yet! So yeah, if you've gone for a run and you're thristy, a glass of water is gonna rehydrate you much better than a coke, but I'd guarentee 3 cokes would hydrate you much better than a glass of water.

Mmmmmmmmmm. 3 cokes. Mmmmmm.

Yes. I know that. But I'm saying they don't cause you to get rid of more liquid than they put in in the first place. If they did, there'd be a lot of shivelled up dead people in the world.

Ah yes, but I do know what flouride does... the stuff used to be a waste dump byproduct, before they got clever and decided to call it a "whitening agent." While it works to some (slight) degree, did'ja ever wonder why toothpaste tubes have the "do not swallow, if ingested call poison control" warning on it? I haven't touched the stuff for ages *me has a well in his backyard*

Quote: "But I'm saying they don't cause you to get rid of more liquid than they put in in the first place."

Well no, they just put very little in. Three cokes all at once is not a good idea, just think about how you're going to crash when all that caffene wears off.

To be honest chap, I can't really guage the caffine thing. A lot of people buzz like a madman on a few cups of coffee, but I don't. It's kinda how tinker claims she's immune to alcohol, I think I am immune to caffine. Once I was the dez when we went out on a night our. Really rubbish. I think I had 1 bottle of becks to keep me going and then I thought, if I can't drink alcohol, I'm going to overload on caffine and get a legal buzz. So over a 4 hour period I drank 8 cans of redbull. Each on is 400% of your recommended daily allowance of caffine. So I had 3200% of my RDA of caffine. I was awake, yes, but no buzz, no hyperactivity. I was chilled all night and when I got home at about 1am, I was out as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Dunno, maybe that means the diuretic effects are subjective too. Perhaps I'm less dehydrated by those sorts of drinks. The caffine definitely doesnt seem to work on me.

That sounds like me during the TYTT competition. I'd been awake for three days straight. I fell right to sleep on the floor by my computer when I sent Rich my submission. Then Rich said my game was nice but too much of a 'mini-RPG'

I'd planned on paying for all of my energy drinks with the prize money...

For those of you who don't like drinking water, I advise getting Vitamin water... it tastes great, and they have all sorts of good vitamins as well as de-ionized water. I mean, there's nothing in them that's bad for you. Just don't drink 8 a day, or you'll overdose on vitamin B...

Isn't that a con though like vitamin tablets? Dont you need the vitamins to be fixed in certain types of food to absorb them? I saw a program about vitamins once and about how some peeps take lots of vitamin tablets to top it all up. The problem was, you had to them them with specific types of food or they wouldn't be absorbed. Specifically they found that vitamin c supplements taken with water didn't get absorbed at all, but taken with milk was slightly better. Eating fruit was the only way to do it properly, or drinking OJ. Mind you, if you drink OJ, it's a diuretic, so you'll shrivel into a raisen and die.

It's all just so complicated. I can't be arsed anymore. Suicide pact?!?!

You're not too likely to overdose on vitamin B, although I'm not going to say you can't. But it is water soluble, so most of the extra that you injest and your body doesn't need will just come out in your urine.

Here's the main reason I drink water: I'm a college student and I'm flippin' broke!

I think what he ment to say was that you have no clue what the effects of carbonic acid or phosphoric acid will have on your system so shut up.

I agree, ingesting chemicals isn't allways bad, take bread... that has a chemical structure. Similarly, you can't say all acids are the same.

There is also the fact that your blood is very sensitive to ph changes. True it uses a buffer system to help prevent many bad changes, but buffers are only as good as their concentrations. ingest enough acid, and have fun!
