Despite the fact that there a quite a few dvds/games coming out soon that I want, I was looking into geting the new NDS Lite coming out July 1st. I already own a PSP but only use it to go online and watch movies. So I was wondering, are the games worth geting a 130$ system?

IWith all that you mentioned, and if the games are good, sell it at a starting bid of $300, with the memorystick duos, games, and system and all accessories.

@ Megaton Cat
Just buy the core system, it's waaay better than the regular.

If you don't already have a ds, definitely get the lite. The ds has a great set of games, and will soon be getting a bunch of rpgs if you like those sorts of games. I recommend going to a review site and looking up the higher scoring games for the ds to see if it's something that would interest you.

I recomend Sonic rush, New Super Mario Bros, Tony Hawk Sk8land, MarioKart DS, and Advanced Wars Duel Strike. There are many other great games out the like Mario 64 DS, Metroid Prime Hunters, Animal Crossing, Castlevenia Dawn of Sorrow, Brain Age, Kirby Canvas Curse, etc.
Crystal Chronicles and FFIII from Square Enix will probably be amazing when they come out, as well as that Chibi Robo game... There are a bunch of good games; you should go see for yourself.

Also, a ds tv viewer and web browser are comming out soon.

Yes, the games are very fun. In fact, I think I'm going to get one (I don't own a DS myself, I mooch off my brother). Also, the DS lite is coming out on June 11th for the US. I'm not sure about the UK though, but It's probably close to the US date because it's not a regional system and the translation is already done.

The DS Lite will launch in Europe on June 23 for about £99.99 or 149.99 euros.

It is such a good deal--- seriously. Even if you have the old-school DS (which I do), the system has some seriously fun games. The New Super Mario Bros. is up there with the best of them. I also recommend Advance Wars Dual Strike and Age of Empires.

Age of Empires is totally the sleeper hit of the year for the DS--- I mean, it is basically more of Advance Wars if you're into that, except based on history and real events. I had no idea the dev company is from my city--- I would have applied to work for them if I would have known.

Also, Yoshi's Island 2 is coming out later this year. If you're like 99% of the game playing crowd and loved the first one, then the second will be sure to please.

Well you guys sold me. I'll definatly wait for Lite. However I was hoping to get it before July 7th considering I'm leaving for Washington DC to attend presidential classroom (I'll be in the next bunch of people who screw you over ) But I'd rather wait for the better system. Wat really sold me was TV and web browser, bizar guy do you have a link to somthing I can read up on about that.

However unfortunatly the used psp market is not doing good. It appears I'll barely make 200 for all that stuff togeather, so thats enough for the system and 1 or maybe 2 games.

@ oddmind: yes i use that pic all the time

I had it since it was released and sold it last week. I think the NGC one is better as you have the retro NES games. Just didn't have the time and energy to devote to the NDS version.

Jeku, what are you on about? AOE on the DS sucks!

Gotta be one of the worst DS games I've played in a long time
The interface was just all wrong... The way the characters were displayed, all wrong...
I know they don't have as much screen realestate to work with, but... Definatly not as good as it could have been!

... Just my 2c

It cannot be worse than Zoo Tycoon.

Damn that game annoys me...

''There's something in the Zebra's enclosure that he doesn't like''

What! - Liver?, a dead goat, some pineapple! - freakin tell me!!!

Sorry, but if it was easy to smash up a DS game then I'd do just that. AOE looks reasonably strategic, it'll probably be a pre-owned purchase, games tend to get nice and cheap round these parts when a lot of people take them back.

I think that I have to buy the Resident Evil this month, and probably the new Metroid game too. Res evil first though, has to be.

I've knocked up a DS game

Spider Soltair... 'tis quite sexay if I do say so myself... Works perfectly on the DS, but a little funny in some emulators... Whatever, I'm the only one that plays a few games before I go to sleep, so it's just fun

Planning on getting a homebrew kit, for emulators and stuff, will be sure to nab your solitaire game .

If you ever want to make another card game, then FreeCell would be great - purely selfish of course, I much prefer FC to solitaire.

You can even get a soundtracker for the DS now, that should be fun.

Apart from the new machine looking different and having a brighter, more durable screen, does the new DS have any other new features? I'm trying to persuade my son to wait just a little longer for the new one.

The screens are closer together too.

It depends, the new DS is quite a bit cooler looking than the old one, I have a plain vanilla silver DS, and really it's a fairly ugly handheld, very basic design (which suits me really). I really think the PSP is a bit over-designed.

The screens on old DS's often get discoloured pixels too, that's a bit of a pain if you don't have the reset software. I'm pretty sure the new version has fixed that.

Just pretend that you've read some nasty things about the older DS's online and would rather get him a spanking new design one instead .

Thanks Jess, I have looked into the dev kit, but really it's over my head. Damn I should learn at least a bit of C++, it'd be worth the trouble for me I think.

I'd like to make an icon editor, like a little art package for the DS - so GUI's and stuff could be designed on the DS. If I had the skills, I'd make SEUCK kit for it - now that would rock, making little shoot em ups and having people wifi them off your DS, schoolkids would go nuts for that stuff!.

When I heard of AoE on the DS I imagined a wonderful remake of the glorious PC game. I was somewhat shocked when I saw the screens - it bear no resemblance to Aoe!

Oooooohhhh I'd have a great joke advert for that thing. Imagine an attractive woman, opens the new black DS, slowly drags the wand over the touch screen, then tries to apply it to her eyes like eyeliner , using the top screen as a mirror!.

Of course not! It's a remake, but turned into a turn-based strategy game. Jess--- did you actually play it? I'm enthralled by the depth of it. It truly reminds me of Advanced Wars!

And metacritic is always right--- gave it 81%! http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/ageofempirestheageofkings

Obviously if you don't appreciate turn-based strategy I could see how you'd be disappointed.

I'm probaly going to get the DS lite, thats because the screen on my normal DS broke and well may as well use it as an excuse to buy a lite, however if I hadn't broke it, I would have better use with my money.

Van, yeah, C++ is a must
And quite a good handle on how pointers, structs, function pointers, etc all work... But, you can probably find more than enough online tutes to help you out with that.

Jeku, Yeah, I played it... For a couple days. Wanted to stop after the tutorial level, but gave it some more of a chance since I really enjoyed the PC AOE games. But, it just didn't do it for me.
I actually quite like RTS games - Have wanted to make ( and have done a fair chunk of ) one for a while now... *Shrug*

But, each to their own

CzarTim,
What do you mean by a menu?
It has a boot menu ( which you can set to autodetect and just play the cartridge in the DS )... And some basic functionality, like a Clock and date, and some colour settings, and the WiFi settings, but it's not a built in game or anything, it's just the things OS

Ahh, got Metroid:Hunters yesterday, I was really surprised at how awesome the controls are, you'd expect quite a steep 'getting used to' curve, but after about 30 mins I'd forgotten I was aiming with a damn toothpick!

That is a hella impressive game, PSP owners would probably scoff at it, but I honestly think it could be the best handheld FPS ever.

Quick question, anyone played Goldeneye DS?, it looks ok, does it use the same control scheme as Hunters, anyone know?

Also, review of the new DS Lite(I haven't watched all of them):

Saw one in the flesh (well, plastic) yesterday. Was just one of those demonstration models game shop employees get to show to customers so it didn't work but it looked beautiful (first time I'd actually seen one up close and personal). I'll almost definately pick up a white one (to match my ibook) might even pre-order.

EDIT:: The only reason I was in the game shop was because I was tooing and froing over wheter or not to get a chunky DS.

EDIT 2::

Chances are if you shop around you'll be able to find somewhere that's doing an offer on the Lite (especially if you're willing to pre-order), something along the lines of a free game could be enough persuation.

Haha, here in OZ land, we finally got a console before the rest of the world... The DS Lite has been out here since the 27th May

Oh, and a tip for anyone that wants to develop Homebrew for the DS, the DS Lite is not a good option. Neither are the Blue/Pink old-style DS's.
The firmware on them means that you can't use PassMe devices (basically a device that lets you run your compiled game from your Home-Brew Flash Cart) except for the newer ones which are more expensive.

Alternatly, you can flash your Firmware to a modded one that automatically allows execution of your app from the Flash Cart (doesn't change anything else, and you can revert back later), which is what I have done (so much easier!)

And, if you have a Wireless Network card, you can use the DS's Download Play to play the E3/Launch demo's like Meteos, Polarium, Metroid and others.
And of course, your homebrew app if you have the modded firmware...

Jess.

The current flash carts, from what I read, are not that good yet anyways (especially for saving games, as you need to have an original DS game with the same memory as the homebrew ones). Soon they're releasing a cart that allows game saves on itself, so that should be sweet

Nah, the flash carts work perfectly with the save files.

It's just a matter of, if you're trying to run a commercial ROM (like the free E3 demos, eg Metroid) on it, and it wants to save, it'll try to save to the EEPROM of the SD card, and as such, the game needs a patch to make its save function point to the NAND of the Flash Cart

There are also SD cards out that you can get, but personally I find them over-kill... And besides, SD cards don't fit into GBA's

'tis all a bit of fun, but the best place to look up info is on the gbadev.com forums

It's all very interesting stuff... And if you sit back and think about it, it's all about programming the hardware of the system, so you can basically controll whatever the heck you like on the thing, and it will work ( provided you know what you're doing and do it right ) which is why it's possible to Mod the firmware, and to run these E3 demo's from a flash cart once the ROM has been patched

The WiFi can be any Wireless network that doesn't require a log-in (so, a University network, like the one I connect to, does not work).

If you don't have wireless, then you can get a Dongle from Nintendo which acts as a WiFi receiver, and connects you to your hard-lined internet.

As I've never connected to the WiFi, I'm not sure of the process involved, but I hear it's quite simple, and from looking at the WiFi settings on my DS, it's obvious that it'd be quick and simple
