Gem Towers - Another game I've had lying around on my drive for far too long. Over these last few days I decided to finish it off and recompile it in Rev6. See if you can get a high score of 100,000 - It's pretty addictive.

Switch any 2 adjacent gems to form legal straight rows of 3 or more of the same gem/color. There are 26 possible neighbours. Spin the camera to switch objects from the back to the front etc. Millions of possible levels with a progressive difficulty level built in. The game gets harder the further you go.

Very very nice game. Only, after completing the second level on medium, the game completely froze up with just a starry background.

Amazing!

Glad to see a decent puzzle game with nice subdued sound effects.

Camera movement is smooth as silk and the lighting effects on the gems are best I've ever seen.

This is gonna be my fave DBPro game I think.

Thanks for all the great comments. Hey Spooky, the shine was created like so:

Point light set at 45 degrees to the surface at around 5 times the distance from the scene (i.e. if the puzzle is 500x500x500 units) the light is set at 2500,2500,2500...with a light range 20x this distance. This range creates hot spot specular reflection intensity closer to the surface (similar to moonlight)

Spec setting is locked at 45%

Textures are flat color with a simple gradient with a UV projection also set at 45 so the gradient slices the surfaces adding more depth to the sheen

The geo has flat quads/ngons with bevelled edges to both pick out the highlights and sell the final sheen. Note: The ngon surfaces all have smooth normals, while the bevelled edges have hard normals.

Ambient light 40

The dark backgrounds and streaming light trails all help accentuate the effect.

Overall, the lighting was intended to 'get in the way' of the game play, forcing the player to spin the scene, as well as help the gems glint a little without killing the rendering.

I have a pretty crappy video card so I was betting on that if I could get some fairly good frame rates, then it would work on most systems. I also wanted to avoid custom shaders for compatibility reasons.

Great info! I too have a fairly old graphics card, a Geforce 4 which does not like shaders, so I was surprised your game looked so good.

This game is great, but there is amajot bug. When you run out of lives, and then switch to a bonus level, an error pops up, and it quits. It also won't let you open up the game again.

The error was something like undefined array.

WOW! fantastic score Uncle Sam, and at level 30. I think the highest level I achieved was level 28 with a score of 123k or there abouts, and I made the bloody game

Nice going!!

If I have time over the next few weeks (I'm working on another project), I'll also look into fixing those bugs. I'd like to wrap this game into a deluxe version with a few more options and give it a more predictable difficulty curve.

Now, let's see if 200K is possible

There's also another annoying bug but I cannot see a pattern to it yet. Sometimes you get the odd gem that just refuses to be picked with the mouse.

good game, but i suggest to add an "highlight object" option, i've some difficult to point objects with mouse because the pick routine it's a bit dummy.
well, i'm not too good at puzzle , i haven't understand the rules of your game. I think it is a good idea to place in the game's essential frontend a better "HOW TO PLAY" info, maybe like in neogeo game.

The light effects are really good, and the graphics are clean.
The game ran smooth, and it's very nice to watch, the sounds are appropiate, a well crafted puzzle game, it should be widely distribuite as soon possible! (place it in free gaming sites)

Paul, May I say that this is by far, a superb game!!! A highly original and addictive concept, good challenges, and a superb way to improve depth perception and hand eye co-ordination. You've got my vote for having one of the top games to ever be released on this forum.
