In which case Microsoft will get rather annoyed may cause you problems - in which you'll pay for that.

And we'll have no mention of pirating things here.

And its usually illegal... Microsoft haven't as far as I know made their old OS's free - could always check with them to find out.

It's up to microsoft. There's no law that says outdated software should be free.

If you were a smart young chap. That windows95 cd that came with your computer is still in your posession. If you were an even smarter chap, you made a backup of this cd. And IF you remove windows 95 from your old computer you can "technically" install it on a new computer because the licence is for one machine.

Then you need to buy 3.1 or 95. MS have never released any of their OS's for free.

If they are so primitive then why in Benjamins name do you want it? You want something but are unwilling to pay for it

Stories from Microsoft... how one company lost its mind.

One fair day I lost my registration code for Windows 98. Looking for a way around buying a new version I came up with a devious plan. I called up microsoft and in a very 'youthful voice' asked for a copy of the manual to be sent to my door step. Turns out they didn't even bother taking off the registration code. And Microsoft got outsmarted once again!

The point of my anadote? Call Microsoft and ask them, they might send it to you for free (probally not), or charge a very low price... it would be best to wait for vista though (makes it even more obsolute).

By the way, if Rich wanted to he could contact Microsoft, turn over your IP and announce that you are piriting their software. The big men in black suits will then come over and take your computer away (along with everything else).

Finally, why do you want 3.1?

@TDP Enterprises:
Much younger then I thought... I was the 'smart chap' who kept the 95 CD, kept the 98 cd... but failed to keep a back up of either (CDs broke about 3 years ago).

Microsoft doesn't release their OS's because almost all of them are still in use in the industrial world. We have 4 benders that run on MS DOS 6.22, 1 saw that runs on Win 3.11 with MS DOS 6.22, and 1 saw that runs on Win 95. And this equipement is fairly new. I can still buy copies of all of those from MS. I can even buy 486 100MHz processors and P1 200MHX MMX processors which they run on. Why would they give away what they can sell?

I would try maybe contacting MS and see if you can buy it (for surely not too expensive)

I can see why they would not sell win95 for free(because of .exe stuff and such) but win3.1 I see no reason (dos6.22 I don't see a reason for because theirs things like freedos)

Why should software be given away for nothing even if it is old? Copywrite doesn't end for 70 years in the UK, and books last for 70 years plus the writers age, meaning that the 70 years doesn't start until the writer is dead. Microsoft are still a very active company, who hold all the legal licences to their own work.

This whole P2P firesharing and abandonware thing seems to have given the impression that we're entitled software just because it's old. That confuses me somewhat.

As I said you can buy any version of Microsoft OS's from Microsoft. You need to get ahold of their industrial division. Seems like MS DOS 6.22 is about $60 and Win 3.11 is about the same. It's been about a year since I priced them though.

They can still sell these as it is hell getting the industrial software, that runs on them, to run properly on the others like FreeDOS. The industrial software that runs on this can be as high as $2000 per license( for 3 floppy disks 0_o ). That is the sad part. But if you have hardware that needs it, you have no choice as it could cost 10's of 1000's to upgrade the hardware.

Commodore kid, do you realize how dumb your plan to trick us was. As soon as he asked for the link, you say you found it at a place where you cannot provide a link for, and ignored his question. It's as plain as the fact that your a noob.

Like MS is going to care about some kid downloading a 15 year old os just to see what it will look like

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

Kenjar, buddy, that link is not to the Windows 3.1 Operating System, but a link to Windows Installer Ver. 3.1 which is, and I quote, "application installation and configuration service"

It's not an operating system.
