Ok people I think you understood the topic of this post by the question phrased in the title. Who is the Best band ever and why? Thats what I want to know from you guys. I personally love a lot of bands but lately I've been gravitating towards Death Cab For Cutie because its something to relax you while your Due date on your game looms ever closer. Other mentionable bands of note.
-Thrice: For just plain getting some energy out.
-The beatles:Yellow Submarine...Need I say more?
-Bloc Party:British Political Punk rock, the genre says it all.
-The Killers:Crazily addictive songs that don't make me want to commit suicide after hearing them a million times.
-LostProphets:Cause its lostprophets.
-Our Lady Peace-Al cecina, one of the best songs ever.
-U2-Its U2, no band listing is complete without U2. Besides I love Bloody Sunday.
Yes I know that list is extensive but hell, I could have added a lot more.

The Beatles is the best, because they made songs people wanted to hear.
Sex Pistols is also the best, because they started a new genre of music.

Decoration, because I work with the bass guitarist, and because John Peel thought they were good enough to do one of his last sessions.

Hmmm. Even though David Gilmour just popped up on my iPod, I will ignore his claim. For me I started with Def Leppard, and they will always be the best band Beatles and Rolling Stones come second probably, with Nirvana, Metallica, and Guns 'N Roses bringing up the rear. Although these are easily swapped with Pink Floyd and bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin when I'm in the mood.

Any classic rock is good, but my all time favorite is Ted Nugent. Why? He's a cool guy and does some insane guitar solos.

Hardly a sensible thread since people of different ages will have differing opinions and the time periods/musical styles/society's musical tastes/etc are not comparable.

"What's YOUR favorite...x" type threads are one thing, "The best x ever..." is quite another.

I'm sure someone born in 1930 will have a vastly different opinion than someone born in 1990, or the 1600's even...

"Ye Olde Quartet" was the best!

Makke, hands down.

Any group from Europe who remixes C64 songs, by definition, has to be the best band ever.

You just secretly want to be British Apart from those non-UK bands I mentioned obviously....

Oh, and obviously Manic Street Preachers now I think about it. Cos anything from Wales rocks. And the Stone Roses... Damn iPod..... And I used to love Kiss. Yes. I know. I know....

And considering everyone has to have obscure bands that no-one has heard of, but still totally rock (or rocked in my case I think), how about these : Sugar (awesome until I saw how old they actually were), Sisters of Mercy (I know they are Goth, but listen to the Vision Thing album if you have any rock taste whatsoever), Pond, and Ozric Tentacles (screw your speakers up even better than Roger Waters (he rocks too BTW, even without PF)). Look em up, you won't regret it

And I will sign off with a Vangelis. Every programmer has to have at least one ambient artist to love (or they are not a real programmer), and I don't really like Jarre. And the bloke who wrote Chi Mai (almost best song ever IMHO) was pretty good.

Cheers (since we don't have a "rock on" smiley, then Metallica smiley will have to do )

Beatles and Rolling Stones are great, I dont know many people that hate them. Nirvana and Metallica and Guns 'N roses are all awesome too. Pink Floyd owns. Period. My nephew just took my original dark side of the moon album, and it hurts having it gone. Hurts. Black Sabbath not so much, but Led Zepplin is great. I have a Led Zepplin Remastered album set from 92. Owns.

Good reason I personally can't stand the Lost Prophets though.

Best band has got to be Abba, definately, I want their babies!!!

Back into seriousness...

The best bands for me:
Symphony X - They are quite unique, although Progressive metal, like Tool or Dream Theatre, but have their own originality, by combining progressive metal with...Symphony (name gives it away) sometimes they include actually symphony music with the addition of guitars etc. or will play the standard rock instruments with a symphonic twist, something I highly recommend trying out.

Metallica - My first metal band really (when ruling out Zepplin and Aerosmith) Well my second half of my life has been growing up loving Metallica's music, Master of Puppets being my favourite album, to me it was full of angst and meaning, it wasn't about getting angry at a booze party (like some of their later stuff) but the suffering of war heroes etc.

Marilyn Manson- I started listening to him after Metallica (Aged 8/9) I cannot stand his new stuff, but loved his old stuff, he was almost an idol for me, his music was twisted, emotional and even had a meaning in places that wasn't always something satanic, but I liked how he tackled teenaged angst (I didn't have much angst myself, but it is what made his music good) then he sacked Twiggy who helped him write songs...and sort of followed the mainstream sort of style, sex, booze, drugs, girls and partying, woo-bloody-hoo. Coma White and Sweet Dreams are my favourite songs, but I think his beetles cover of working class hero is really good, they all shed some powerful emotions, as did my other favourites.

Damien Rice-
A cello, an orchestra, an Opera singer (Eskimo), an acoustic guitar, a gentle voiced man with heart ache, all make some beautiful music, its like something I've never heard before, he stands out and his music is very poetic, as a writer something poetic attracts me. Eskimo is a really good song of his.

Led Zepplin-
I don't need to explain Zepplin, their music is mind blowing, it shows a lot of talent and originality and creativity, Stairway to Heaven has to be their greatest, as many have loved it, including myself.

Opeth-
A mix of heavy screamy metal and progressive metal, long songs like any other proggies, but just know how to get that guitar keep me interested in the song and think 'dude this is great' and his voice is definately better than that of Dream Theater's, a good mix of screaming a singing, but all well placed. Glad I saw them at download, they are worth seeing and I might see them again in a few weeks if I can get enough people to come.

I am sparticus and so is my wife

Have you the latest album? 20th Century boy is pretty good.

Fantastic album. Although my favourite album is Wish you were here (and the song is perfect for funerals ). Have you any Waters albums? Amused to death IMO is right up there. And it has awesome speaker effects.

And to add another band I'll nominate INXS. Used to love them. Good olde shuffle mode.

Wish You Were Here is[codemonkeyspam]awesome. We have Dark Side of the Moon on vinyl[codemonkeyspam], Animals on CD, but I mostly listen to[codemonkeyspam]their greatest hits[codemonkeyspam]thing, "Echoes". In[codemonkeyspam]addition to the usual stuff, Fletcher Memorial Home, When the Tigers Broke Free, and[codemonkeyspam]Comfortably Numb are particularly[codemonkeyspam]awesome.

The Who.
Pink Floyd.
The Beatles.
The Rolling Stones.

Take your pick, but those are IMO the only sensible contenders - even considering bands like U2, the Killers, Lost Prophets......gimme a break, those no-marks don't deserve a mention here.

I couldn't give a claim to the greatest band ever, as I'm bound to find at least three new favourites before the years out. However, here are a couple of personal favourites.

Iron Maiden- Try not playing air guitar to te trooper. It's really hard. A great mix of blues, shred and catchy structured soloing, and excellent riffs (Rainmaker is my favourite riff of all time). Bruce Dickinson is a pretty good vocalist too.

In Flames- Pre Soundtrack stuff is the best melodic death metal around. Colony and the Jester Race are fantastic albums. Embody the Invisible is my favourite song of all time.

Rhapsody- If you like cheesy lyrics then you'll love this. Excellent epic fantasy metal, they mix shred, and metal style riffs with complete backing orchestras and choirs. Their vocalist can't speak english though. Eeeeeemerald Sword anyone?

Opeth- Most original, innovative bands around. Bloody brilliant mix of death metal and acoustics, switching between them several times in each song (all 10+ minutes long).

Deep Purple/Rainbow- Blackmore's a genious. Sure Smoke on the Water is the most over-rated song ever, but that doesn't stop lazy, never before or Highway star from being awesome. Steve Morse is useless though. I prefer Rainbow to deep purple though. The songs are catchier, and the guitaring better.

I've noticed that several people have mentioned Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I understand their greatness, I really do, but no matter how hard I try, I just can't like them. I just find their music impossible to get into at all. I feel like I'm missing out.

IceBound Melodic rock/metal band with loads of lead guitar, clean female vocals, and more guitars! What more could you want?

Yeah, thats what I got on my iPod. Actually was there ever a CD released of live in Pompeii? When I was young I recorded it off the TV and it was totally awesome. Echoes never sounded better. But I only found the DVD (which I don't really want, although I suppose there must be a way to MP3 it?).

Brilliant band. So many good songs (that CSI keeps nicking). Tommy was fantastic when I was a kid.

Nah, Rainbow and Deep Purple were also class. I just never got into them as much as the others.

As to Iron Maiden I never seemed to like them that much. The odd song appealed, but never grabbed me for some reason. Motorhead (Hawkwind) on the other hand got me going.

LOL! No Stairway! Denied!

I absolutely love threads where I don't even need to say anything because most of you already know what I'd say anyway But although most people know that my favorite band is Radiohead, even I wouldn't say they're the best. The Beatles wins that debate hands-down. In rock history, there's never been a more popular band. How many other rock bands were in your eleventh grade US History text book? Because the Beatles were the only band we learned about in school. But that's in rock, and I assume you mean pop music since the 1950's when you say "band," unless you mean big band groups (which I doubt, seeing as how a lot of people your age don't apparently know what big band was), and in that case, I'd have to go with Tommy Dorsey's orchestra. But, as Cattle first pointed out, it depends on the era and the genre:
1950's = Chuck Berry (or maybe Buddy Holly)
1960's = The Beatles
1970's = Led Zeppelin (learn how to spell ZeppElin or don't say they're your favorite band, lol)
1980's = U2
1990's = Radiohead
2000's = Wouldn't know because I stopped listening to new bands because they all smell like fish-flavored limburgh (sp?) cheese

edit: would anyone mention Def Lepard if their drummer had two arms? I mean really, they can't even spell "leopard" and I doubt they used "def" because they were huge Run DMC fans

The Who is really a British institution, like binge-drinking - even people who detest music like some of the Who's stuff. My personal fave Who song has to be 'Behind Blue Eyes', but I must admit that I tend not to listen to them a lot, kinda have to be in the right mood for more pronounced bands like The Who and The Stones, Dazzag knows of what I speak .

The scene from The Mighty Bush with Roger Daltrey doing the hoovering cracks me up, anyone seen that episode? (Put away!, those fiery biscuits)

Yes. They just got better afterwards. Already great.

Quote: "The Who is really a British institution, like binge-drinking "
That and pub crawls

Quote: "Dazzag knows of what I speak"
Absolutely. And you can't have too much of something. For example, and against the law of physics, it is actually possible to become sick of pizza and lasagne. It's true. Personally at the minute I am on an 80's hair/glam rock revival. Time for Motley Crue's greatest hits methinks... "Don't go away mad, just go away...". Honestly the more I hear that line the more I think it's genius and not just c**k rock stuff Beer helps...

Speaking of Led Zeppelin, aside from Jimmy Page's masterful playing, it seemed to take them a while to get really creative. Most of the songs your find on Early Days is modified 12-bar blues. Awesome stuff, but pretty basic in that sense.

Touche with the Alt 0223 or whatever thing. I forgot to add to my list, Ten Years After-A space In Time. Best kind of Vietnamish music out there. I put it in my BFV playlist and played it while I blasted people in my Huey. That and FLight Of The Valkyries.

I mean maybe we should all put them into one thread... I'm hoping this is a fad... It seems like one of those conversations you strike up with a girl who obviously doesn't wnat to talk to you, or an awkward moment has just come about, or maybe youve just run out of things to say.

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, sister and girlfriend in this instance is the same thing Someone has to sleep with these people... they certainly aren't getting groupies lined up around the block. And my god, she IS the worst drummer ever. I've seen guys in the subway with a plastic waste bin and a spatula who had better rhythm stoned on crack and acid and everything else than she has (long live the T line).

I dunno, I'm glad to see all of these music threads popping up lately. It's a sign that maybe the younger generation is FINALLY starting to appreciate good talent Do you have any idea how depressed I was to find out Britney Spears survived her pregnancy? Oh well, I guess we have a second chance now

I like the White Stripes. Would you really prefer John Bonham, one of the best drummers ever and who shined in Led Zeppelin, or Meg White, who is a better fit for a stripped down rock group like the Stripes. I'm not a huge fanboy, but I hate people dissing them because "Meg is a sucky drummer" and "they dont even have a bass player". Anyone ever hear Seven Nation Army?

Why make sense when you could make brownies?

They don't have a bass player?
Uh, no comment. I haven't heard them.
