Congrats on winning the compition. Although it is a bad time to come to America. Where abouts are you going? I hope for your sake it's not the west coast because Korea is going to launch those nukes our way any day now.

When you get to Texas, please don't think that all Americans act that way. Most of us just consider them another country.

Beware - there are certain different things to watch out for:

They don't drink cordial. So things like Ribena are right out.
The water can taste nasty - it's got chlorine in it. Don't drink it on its own (powdered lemonade is alright though).
Drink lots and lots of liquids. The place can be stupid-hot.
Don't be surprised by the toilets - they're just different from UK ones.
There are no electric kettles anywhere. It's very strange.
It's 'the norm' for food orders in restraunts to be too big, and to take home the remains in a box for reheating later. Very peculiar.

Those are just the ones I can remember - but it's the ones that surprised me most when I was in LA for 6 weeks. Good luck!

Ooh! Remember, carry lots of money, preferably in $$$. I'll have my gang of thugs waiting. You'll recognize us, we'll be the ones with chains and bats.

Quote: "The water can taste nasty - it's got chlorine in it. "

Just drink bottled water. I drank the water in Houston one time and it tasted like mold. Pretty gross. The bad thing was, it was at a Chucky Cheese for my kids birthday, so all of the fountain drinks tasted like that. Carry a flask of hard liquor just in case.

Oh, and don't give the beggars any money, all of their stories are just lies (unless they're playing an instrument, then they might have earned it). They'll tell you bus fare went up by $2, or they just need $1 to buy a cheeseburger. Unless it's dark out and you're alone with them, then it might be wise to give them some money. Just keep your tipping money separate from your real money.

And have fun!

I assume they are the ones with "shelves" on. Absolutely hate them in foreign countries. Yuck. Second only to the toilet in Dubai that was just a hole in the ground with footstep marks to put your feet. Honest.

Also I assume the cold water tap is actually warm water (Dubai again). Something seriously wrong with brushing your teeth with warm water....

Somethings are the same the world over. Like McDonalds and BK.

yea its not all that great over here lol.

I haven't really noticed it due to that fect that Ive lived here all my life but there is a good amount of racism over here. People in Texas can be pretty stupid, as all they associate with the UK is "Revolutionary war" and "tea and crumpets" besides tehf act that they drink only sweet tea and dont know what a crumpet is.

OH! another thing... the tea is usually sweet. If you ask for unsweetened tea they might look at you funny but they can probably make some. Again, the tea is supposed to be sweet... so even the unsweetened stuff tastes wierd (for you).

EDIT: one last thing, if anyone ever gets hostle with you just say in a semi loud vouce "git-r-done" as one word and they will most likeley repeat this phrase and become a friendly party.

no joke, unfortunately.

food is never organic.

portions are apparently large, though I dont have trouble most of the time .

no "CHAV"... we call them "Wiggers" for obvious reasons.

your lucky your going to orlando . Any further south and you would be denied service if you didnt speak spanish (ie Miami) no joke.

Also its pretty damn hot down there, even for me and I live in Georgia right above florida. Humidity is usually in the high 90's.

Ive never been to the UK bvut I'd say prepare for hot hot HOT WET weather.

I can vouch for that, my aunt and uncle came over last summer from england and were amazed by "huge" portions. I have no idea what the portions are over there, but so far it seems they must be small.

Also its not incredibly hot in orlando right now, course I have been raised here, so I am used to the weather. Florida is actully a great place to live, one of the prime statesin the U.S Im proud to say (If you dont dislike over crowding, its dreadfull here!) One more thing, if you anger somehere and they say there gonna bust a cap, thats a BAD thing.

get use to people asking you what you said, to us(or at least me) I over 1/2 of the time can not understand UK accent
color is not spelt colour here(people might consider you racist)
in Texas there will be people wearing hats, if 1 trys to communicate with you then calmly walk away avoiding eye contact, or if that doesn't work use the "git-r-done" method above
if someone dares you to ask a person why they still have christmas lights up, don't do it unless you want to get shot

ummm and florida, heard disney world was awesome so go there

tap water isn't bad some places(especially at places like montana and colorado) but Texas is disgusting
no we don't have tea kettles everywhere, though coffee is popular

be nice to the security people at the airport unless you want a cavity search(also don't try to take your sprite back)

and Greenday is popular-but they are everywhere so thats nothing new

and yea some of the nicer hotels have a little office type thing you can use and it has a pc

I lived in England for the first half of my life, and have lived in the United States for the second half. Something you have to experience is that everywhere here does free refills , unlike in England. In some places you will not even be half way through one drink before they bring another. It is truly amazing.

P.S. This only works with soda.

Oh yah, and another thing about America is all the Mexican food. I'm used to having a lot of cultural variety--- all the different Asian and European foods all on my street. But when I drove to the big mall in Seattle there were only fast food and Mexican foods. Interesting, slightly weird. Not that Mexican food is bad (it's my favourite), but interesting all the same.

EDIT:

Quote: "P.S. This only works with soda."

Don't you mean pop? But yes, they do that here too. And free coffee refills if need be. Also many/most of the big chain restaurants here offer unlimited nonstop fries (chips to you UKers). Mmmmmmmmm

Sounds like a Monty Python skit., the minister of silly misspellings perhaps.

Quote: "OH, yes. An 'English muffin' is our version of a crumpet."

I always thought a crumpet was more like a scone and that english muffins were not remotely english.

I have not been to Houston so I can't speak from experience, but I am sure you will find killer BBQ and chili. And when it comes to foreigners, Texas is on the border to Mexico, they see foreigners all the time and I am sure they will be more then nice to you (southern hospitality thing) Besides, I have rarely, if ever met someone who really thinks of people from the UK as foreign, most people here feel a strong bond between us and will treat you like one of our own.

We have a kettle for a gas burner and an electric one...

And I have no prob with the tap water...I bet Brit water would taste weird to me.

And I only go to fast food usually...and when I don't I eat it all. I wouldn't like it much I think at a UK resteraunt...

hey what are people bashing Texas for, I live there . From my experiences in 8 other states I've been too (all in the south though), it's not very different here than anywhere else . Don't believe the stereotypes, because, believe it or not, we're not all stupid hill-billy's who live on ranches and wave the Confederate flag and get drunk all the time, in fact, I've never actually met someone that has done that . So, don't listen to them, anyways, I hear people are nicer in the south than in the north . So have fun on your vacation, and you'll see that the stereotyped Texan isn't true .

Nope. Unless you are a kid and have been magically transported from 1971. Soda is generally called soft drinks here.

Quote: "hehe below virginia everything is coke... "
Same here. You constantly get pubs saying things like "It's actually Pepsi here sir, is that ok?". Yeah, whatever, like we care.

As for "chips to you Uk'ers", we do have McDonalds and BK (all over the damn place), and they still insist on calling them fries. Which they are, as they are totally different to proper chips (ie. they are crap).

Quote: "Besides, I have rarely, if ever met someone who really thinks of people from the UK as foreign"
Same here really. All foreigners are people who don't speak english really. Americans are a bit like people from Scotland or something. Just more understandable, and a bit fatter Considering a serious percentage of your ancestors come from here originally then fair enough I say. Heh, always like where some of the names come from. I mean New York is like so amazingly different to York (pub, grass, a house, more grass, another pub, a stream, a cute bridge, a field...) for instance. Although it's old name (New Amsterdam wasn't it?) is a little bit different too. Been to Amsterdam? McDonalds on one side of the road, hardcore party place on the other....

I'm not sure how well this will work in a UK accent

Especially do not use if you are both bowing up mad at each other. Then it becomes the equivalent to a double dog dare. And you do not want to ever double dog dare any southerner to do anything. They are more than likely to do it. There are very, very few situations where you can back down from a double dog dare. And most of these involve hurting family (the southerner's not your's).
