First we get massive flooding, now we're having a scorching heat wave where it's 104+ degrees outside (very uncommon for NY's southern tier I should mention, we almost never see this kind of heat for a few days in a row). And a tornado hit outside of Ithaca, and we don't really get tornados here that often. What's next, an August blizzard? Is the weather acting funny where anyone else lives?

Currently in the UK, we're experiencing a heatwave. Apparently it may be one of the hottest weeks on record for us here. (I realise that it'll be next to nothing to you peeps from foreign climes, but it's hot for us.) Before you know it, we'll be able to grow grapes again.

Where I live, rain is usually common. So far this year, we are far below the average rainfall, and I can't recall a single day since around March that it rained all day. The rain we do get is only a light sprinkle for 5 or 10 minutes.

In france we also experiencing a heatwave... some regions are in Alert level 3 for heatwave (there are 4 alert levels)...

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

We also have pretty good weather here in Denmark. It has been hot for some days now. Even with my window open it's hot in my room But oh well... Let's see how long this good weather will stay... Normally we have a pretty unstable weather... Like, one day it's sunny and hot, and the next day it's rainy and windy.

iirc 9 of the 10 hottest years on record have been the last 9 years, with 2005 being the hottest so far. records have been kept since 1880's (again iirc).

Yeah, its one of the hottest weeks we've had for a long time. Everyone has their windows open to try and get just a tiny bit of cool breeze inside. Everyone will be sleeping windows open to try and keep cool ..... so what do the surrounding farmers decide to do?? SPRAY CRAP EVERYWHERE! Hi peeps, two choices for today ... asphyxiate from heat and lack of air, or inhale the bodily by-product of a million cows all day in your own home and while you sleep.

Over here opening the windows when you are trying to cool the house down is not the best thing to do.

@Fallout & UK'ers: Apexnow says that too (in UK as well) about "windows open". Doesn't anyone use Air Conditioners there? I mean its good if you don't so you're not burning fossil fuels to create electricity, but it seems the norm to not have an AC there in the UK. Is that true, or is it just you lot?

Nobody has aircon in this country. You can still buy cars without air con aswell. Offices, shops, pubs etc ... no air con. There's only really air con in places that really need it like super markets, malls and posh offices. Basically anywhere that makes a lot of money and can afford to keep people just right.

The truth is for 1 or 2 weeks a year when you need it, it's not worth having it. In a weeks time the temp will be acceptable again and then anyone who does have air con won't switch it on again until July next year.

Gotta admit though, I wouldn't say no to it now! Especially with titanic portions of fermenting turds rotting in the surrounding countryside. I had a bit of cheese a few minutes ago and I'm about to go to bed. You know what they say about cheese and nightmares. So I expect some twisted dreams of having my head rammed up a burning hot cows arse by a deliquent farmer.

I keep windows open on the shaded sides of the house, and closed where the sun hits, with box fans in the windows because they use less energy than AC does. We run the AC because it's too darn hot, and running the AC helps make it so darn hot lol. But most of us where I live get our power from Niagara Mohawk (remember that crazy power outage we had CR? A few years ago? What caused that, do you remember?)... the Niagara falls give us juice, pretty neat. I'm the only person I know who thinks that's nifty hehe. Most of my friends are like "wow, why is that cool again?"

Apart from this single week out of 52 - us brits have very little need for it. AC is also very bad for you - it dehydrates you VERY quickly.

Also - if its warm, you tend to acclimatise to it.

Saying that - at work, we (aka, the IT people) have a secret AC Ladder. In the Comms room there is a dedicated AC unit for the servers (the workers can go boil away though). So we just make up excuses to go in there to use the AC. I'm wondering if there was some subconcious pull on me when the dev server broke the other week... Ended up spending the "best" part of the day in there

They say it's supposed to be almost 30-35 here, but that's just crazy. The average for this time of year is about 28.

That being said, it's cold at work every day no matter how blistering it gets outside due to the AC. I almost feel like brining in a light jacket.

thats really a bunch bull... again trying to start an argument i presume. global warming increases 2 or so degrees of the ocean temp every year... its only a problem because of the food chain...

Well, I didn't go to college for this sort of thing so I'm no authority, but National Geographic and Discovery both had specials that BOTH said that such temperature changes CAN and DO effect weather through a chain of reactions. With all of the crazy things going on with the weather I'm surprised to find anyone, anywhere who doesn't think (or know) that global warming is a real thing. And no, I wasn't trying to start an arguement, I was just saying that maybe global warming is the culprit. I didn't think this would spark a debate because I didn't think anyone would argue with it... the only people who call it a "theory" are oil executives (A) don't turn this into an arguement, you'll lose, and (B) if you do, for once I won't need to fight a one-sided battle because I already know a bunch of people on here are worried about global warming. If it isn't global warming, then please explain to me what it is because I'd really like to know... whatever it is, it's something I'm worried about.

I've been here (at TGC) for a little over a year and I've been making software for local companies, training programs for employees and whatnot. Besides a cheesy freeware game, I haven't released much, but I own a "studio" here in Binghamton with about nine local people and five others abroad who are working on releasing two games this august and a few more by the end of the year. 99% of houses won't have AC. Most decent offices (in the south) will have some form of AC (at the very least mobile AC units), and most decent shops (ie. not your local corner shop) will have AC. Pretty standard on cars now, although not completely covered (esp. cheaper models).

At the end of the day though we don't have the weather for it really. This year has been pretty good, but 2 years ago it was rubbish. Really bad. Essentially I am normally seriously thinking of getting a mobile AC unit for about 5 days every 2 or 3 years. Before it gets totally unbearable we normally get a storm or two. Then it heats up a bit. Storm. More heat. etc. But it rarely gets hot enough to heat the ground up so much that it feels even hotter. We were about 32 degrees yesterday, but apparently that was supposed to feel about 29-30. Parents live in Limassol (Cyprus) and they were about 29 (cold day), but because it had been hot for like ages then it felt about 33.

Of course we do get some southern shandy drinkers that put on the AC in the car when it hits 25

Hmmm. This time of year should be around 25 degrees (if it doesn't rain). At the minute they reckon it will be around 35 degrees. 20 degrees higher seems a bit much. Record for July in UK is apparently 36 degrees, and that was sometime around 1930.

I remember a Texan friend of mine visited Glasgow several years ago, expecting it to be cold and wet (well, you would - it's Scotland). Unfortunately there was a bit of a heatwave (a rare one) and he couldn't believe there was no AC in his (not shabby) hotel. If he'd gone any other week of the year, he'd have been looking for the radiators instead.

We've got a little aircon unit that has a pipe out of the window in the house, but some of the guys at work have gotten themselves the ones you actually drill holes in walls for. But that's unusual - they are programming recluses who stay in darkened rooms with 1+ PCs on all the time, so they probably need it.

Got one in my office at work, it's a big box that runs on a chemical, it's used in a few places but we have the only office with a AC unit in - Along with some ceiling fans of course. There was no other choice, if not for the AC and fans, then I could'nt work here.

Counting now... 1,2,3... 9 PC's, 2 laser printers running all the time in this office, and there's no window. Walking into my office is like walking into SPAR, when you get that blast of strange smelling AC, and a chill down your back. In the recent heat it's a freakin godsend!.

hehe. Just so I'm not quoted too far out of context (ahem Mr Oddmind!!! ), the hottest it will be here is about 35C, our average summer is about 25C, and a cool summer here is 20C when it really never picks up. So 10C hotter than average this year, and probably about 15C hotter than a cold summer.

You folks are in great contrast to where I live. Here in Florida, 99% of buildings designed for humans to occupy have AC, and farther south it's actually an oddity for someone to turn on their heaters.

From spring to late fall (and sometimes winter), people run their ACs.

its times like these that im thankful that A)-I have air conditioning that keeps the house at a nice 66F and B)-I live in the land of 10,000 (closer to 14,000) lakes, even on a day like this its nice to go boating on the lake with the buds, water sure cools ya down.

I'm in Ohio, just south of Cleveland. We are going through a "heat wave" but its only like 3 degrees warmer than normal. Every weather forecaster on the news is always talking about the "big heat wave" I'm like, yeah it hit 95 degrees today... Its usually 90. We are forecasted to be in the mid 80's the rest of the week. Completely normal.

@ Matt Rock, considering we are experiencing normal weather, you guys should be soon, as you get most of our weather a day or 2 sooner. And yes... pools are great. I love my pool.

I'm working on a high res photorealistic texture pack. High res as in 7 megapixels, e-mail me with suggestions.

@ Dink: That's a relief! Not long ago I was cursing the rain and now I'm begging for it lol. Even some clouds, anything! And all the weather channel ever says is "stay inside with AC or you'll burst into flames," so I'm praying a bit of coolness comes in. I love it when it's 70-80... but 104?!? UGH!

Yeah, well you guys are getting it worse than us I guess. The hottest we got was I think 97, which really isn't a big deal this time of year for Cleveland Ohio. In fact its quite noraml to be this warm this time of year. But 104 is pretty hot. Heh, I was born on the hottest day in cleveland and it was 104, so we don't see it that hot too often I suppose as my birthday is still holding the record. But hopefully things cool down for you, at least all the floodwaters are drying up

I'm working on a high res photorealistic texture pack. High res as in 7 megapixels, e-mail me with suggestions.

dont get me wrong i believe in global warming (id be an idiot not to) but I dont think that big of a variant has only one source...

Some jerk prayed for a heat wave to dry up the flood, and now we're all sweltering friggin' humans. What is it about the Atlantic Ocean that makes it so darn hot at times? Like in Atlantic City on the boardwalk, it's usually like walking down a huge stovetop. I guess that's the wood planks eminating heat or something, but it's the same on the beach too. You'd think the big flat ocean would make nice cool breezes or something I pity my aunts and uncles in Brooklyn who live in brownstones... they must be like pizza ovens right now lol.

edit @ Oddmind: Well the direct temperature change isn't causing the weird weather, but I think it's effecting other forces of nature and those effects are causing the weird stuff to happen, or at least that's the idea I gathered from watching those shows. Everyone stop driving! lol
