Geek Culture / [Forum Feature Request] I'd like to see someones old names after they've changed theirs.

Actually, I have two requests.

1. I'd like to be able to see someone's old name once they've changed it. Suspicious people often change their name so that they will suck less. Like, maybe in the profile view there could be a list of every name they've ever had.

2. I'd like the server time offset to be more than 12. Now, at first glance, + or - 12 hours seems like it should cover every possibility. However, it does not. It is possible for a time zone right next to me to be 24 hours different. I happen to be 13 or 14 hours off of Central Standard Time, depending on American daylight savings. I end up having to do math in my head that is always wrong.

Thanks!

Nice one. Also it would be handy to identify someone, especially when people change their name once a week Mine would be pretty short though: 1. 2000-2006 Dazzag...

Also doesn't some places like have half an hour time zones? If I remember rightly we had a request to change our system to handle it once (we do travel systems for companies like Thomsons and Lunn Poly - infact exactly like as those are 2 of ours) but they rejected the quote as it was too expensive

Cheers

I originally thought "Yes, good idea about the names." but then I wondered about the few newbies who turn up, don't know how the community works and makes a few enemies very quickly. They get their fingers burnt, and want to start fresh.

So on the one hand - I think it'd be good to stop people who just want to be jerks, hiding behind a new name (and only the mods know it). But on the other hand, I don't want ex-accidental-jerks being limited by their past mistakes.

Fine line between them.

I suspect some Mods, not just spankwads, of changing their forum names. Like Cash, I just use my actual name, although I don't criticize anyone for wanting to take the opportunity to be called anything they want or to maintain whatever privacy level they want. However, I see lots of acrimony in these forums, which is sad. If someone is going to criticize someone else one on one, so be it. But allowing someone to do so from multiple identities over several name changes might create a false impression of more support on the point than the single opinion involved, which is not fair, and which is somewhat deceptive. I support Cash's suggestion of putting the name list in the profile.

I have a notice in my signature.

I think thats a good Idea, and the timezone thing is always wack... Who invented time anyways Obviously wasn't enough beta testing done. haha

The railroads invented time zones, and for a good reason. The alternative is a differnt time of day for every tiny variation in longitude from place to place. However, the time zone boundaries do get somewhat political and/or market oriented, and in some cases inconvenient when on the edge of a zone. By "inconvenient" I mean my neices wait for the school bus long before sunrise. In the US the zones boundaries are incredibly crooked in some cases.

But I'm not sure I understand the effect of the server offset. The time of day cannot be more than +/- 12 hrs offset, although the DATE can theoretically get screwed up. From where I sit, Cash's posts seem to be in the correct chronological order with those from UK and US, based upon my reading of who is responding to what post. On my end the times shown for the respone is expressed in my local time, and always seems correct.

One of the half hour oddities is Newfoundland time, which is UTC-0230. No idea why they did that, but that's how it is.

It does bother me a bit too when mods change their names. I keeping thinking TGC are adding a new mod every couple of days. I think mods should all be named MOD 1, MOD 2, etc. with MOD 3 if there are three mods, and MOD 4 if there are 4. MOD 5 also if we have 5 mods, and MOD 6 if we get up to 6. MOD 1 cannot be MOD 2, and MOD 2 cannot be MOD 1. MOD 1 cannot be refered to as MOD 2, except in jest (haha - that'd be hilarious). MOD 3 cannot be refered to as MOD 1 either. MOD BILLY is completely unacceptable, as is MOD SAM.

Ok, I shall return to my cell.

It's probably Kenjar. He vowed to start an Anti-Cash Fan Club, and this is probably his first daring move. He'll assume my identity, and talk even more trash then I do. I am but a powerless pawn in his brilliant scheme... His final move will be to fake my death while I'm asleep and turn CashCurtis.com into a Man-porn site...

Anyway, the time zone issue-I'm 14 hours ahead of the server time. Sure, I could set my time to +2, but then the date would be all screwy. So, I've just never done that. It seems like a simple fix to extend the list of time differences.

Me? Nah - you can get a Mod to confirm that I've been Tinkergirl all the time here. (Though, I think I signed up for an alt account a while ago - don't think I posted anything, couldn't be bothered logging out as Tinkergirl and logging in as the alt).

Personally, my suspicions were at that 'Grace' person. It's unusual for a girl to have an asian-looking bikini-girl as their avatar. But maybe that's just girly cattiness - who can say

(Can anyone say "Witchhunt"? )

Don't care. If you trawl my posts you will see that I believe you are all forum bots. Apart from Rich who obviously creates them. Obviously my money is good and they can live on an amazingly small amount over all these years

Oh, wait there was that older lady who posted on here a few weeks ago, and she and her friends were going to make a game (which is awesome, I've never met a 40 something year old lady who likes much less makes video games ), wonder if she's still around.
