are there any programs that definitely work when making maps. Preferably free of course, i already tried cart shop and liked it but im keen to find something for free since programming is just a hobby not somethin i want to spend too much on.

I'ld suggest Quark, it's free. It's a decent BSP editor. Adding to your original question, What's a good tool, trick, or program to create decent non-BSP levels? My current project will have alot of outside areas, which rules out BSP.
