All my PC's have been custom built by me. Right now, I'm running this machine:

Gigabyte K8 Triton motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 bit 3500+ CPU
2 80gb Hard-drives
ATI Radeon 9600 video card
1 gb PC3200 RAM
Samsung 20" LCD monitor
Altec Lansing ATP3 speakers

I just keep it upgraded one piece at a time. The hard drives are about the most outdated thing right now, but they've been working well for me, so I haven't bothered upgrading them.

Good performance is better than a good excuse.

1.5ghz Intel Pentium 4
256mb RAM (Maximum, and its a laggy ram)
256mb ATI Radeon 9550 graphics card
40gb HD, 5gb for system restore and other system related things, so technically 35gb.
Pakard Bell CRT Monitor, maximum res 1280x1024
Windows XP Home

However, this is the baby I am saving up for.

Apple Mac Pro
2x Intel Xeon Dual Core 2ghz
1gb ram (might go 2gb, maximum 16gb)
NVidia GeForce 7300 gt 256mb (might get a second one with it)

Where do I start?!?

Main box:
XP3000+
Jetway V400DB mobo
Antec Truepower 550w PSU
1.5gb DDR333
nVidia 6600GT
2x 40gb UDMA133
Soundblaster Audigy
Nice for FS2004 & Guild Wars - not absolutely mind-blowing, but good enough! If there's one thing I'd like to get for this box, it'd be a PhysX PCI card, when they're a little cheaper.

Secondary/Server:
Duron 1100
Cheap mobo
512mb DDR333
nVidia FX5500
40gb UDMA133
2x Adaptec 2904 SCSI cards
This machine just about runs FS2004 & Guild Wars to an acceptable level.

Laptop:
Advent 7081, Celeron M 1300, 256mb, 40gb. Too slow for games because no GPU upgrade is available.

Also, a Beige Mac G3, & a few other PCs in bits - to be rebuilt & networked - eventually! I'd like to give Ubuntu Linux a go on one of these.

Then there's the various (non-PC) Atari STs & Amiga A500...

The Athlon's still good for me, though I'll consider the next big upgrade once Microsoft (finally!) decides to release Vista sometime next year, I suppose. Probably be looking at a four or eight-core Intel Extreme with Quad SLi, dual nVidia 7950s (upgraded to 1gb/GPU memory) & Ãœber monitor http://www.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/global/products/monitors/topics/en/monitor_3007wfp?c=us&l=en&s=gen by then.

That spec looks silly-expensive right now & quadcores are still a glint in everyone's eye at the moment, but I bet these parts will be well down in price by the time we'd all want to do the major upgrade for Vista, about six months post-release (once the bugs are ironed out!). I'll be building it & fixing it myself (as always!).

I have an XP3000+, 1.5gb DDR333, a 6600GT and I'm programming 3k text-based exe's?!

Sony Vaio PCV-RS620G
2x Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.0 GHz with hyper-threading (not sure if it's dual-processor or dual-core or what the difference is lol, but it says there's two processors... I dunno, "feels" like one)
1 GB PC3200 RAM (2x512)
160 GB HD
ATI Radeon 9200 Vaio Edition (pretty sure it's the same as any other one, just that they can say "Vaio Edition" to sound cool)
Creative Soundblaster Audigy LS 5.1 Surround Sound Card

[Ports]
Memory Stick
Compact Flash Type I and II
IBM Microdrive
Smart Media
2x SVideo (1 front 1 rear)
2x composite video & audio inputs (1 set in front 1 set in back)
1x component video inputs
1x component video outputs (who needs to watch their computer on their TV??? )
2x coaxial input (VHF/ UHF) (coax, like you'd use for cable TV)

[Input]
Standard Vaio Keyboard
I/O Magic Optical Wireless Mouse (needs replacing but great for FPS games)
Wacom that I don't know how to use
Saitek ST290 Pro Flight Stick
Saitek R440 Force Feedback Racing Wheel & Pedals
Epson Stylus C84 Printer (which is hard to find ink for)

uh... anything I'm leaving out? It has a DVD-ROM drive and a DVD-RW drive (I wouldn't get one of those silly combo drives hehe, I like have two separate drives). I love my computer, if it weren't so big I'd take it everywhere hehe. Work, making games, playing games, watching television, watching movies, listening to music... I don't think I could survive without my computer, as nerdy as that sounds lol

Duel processor means you have two physical CPU's, duel core is a single processor with two cores built in. In either case it will just feel like 1 processor unless you do alot of multitasking work.

In the last 5 years i'v only had 3 die on me but that coulda been user error but im looking at seagate as a potential replacement for maxtor.

The computer dosnt have a GFX card yet, within the next 2 weeks i should have one and then i'll borrow the digital camera from my father in law.

I don't understand why I'd personally need either, lol. I've been inside the case (when I installed the sound card and during cleaning) and it looks like it has two processors, that or there's something else on the mobo right next to the processor that needs a heatsink and a fan, but I don't know much about hardware so I assumed it was something I didn't need to mess around with hehe. Which is better? Does having two processors make my computer cooler or anything? Or is it just a waste and I would have been better off with the dual core?

Having never run a duel core system myself, merely duel CPU's, I must refrain from claiming all knowing knoweledge. I can only operate with guess work. But from what I understand, duel core CPU's share the same cache, so in terms of it, I'd say duel cpu has the advantage, as they are single units with their own built in cache. However, given the distance information would have to travel, and the over heads envolved in organizing duel CPU's rather than a duel core. I'd guess the duel core had the edge. The cores are much closer together, only requires a single cpu socket, and of cause has specifically written instruction sets built directly into the CPU itself while the Duel CPU is designed around single usage, and thus needs additional hardware built into the motherboard to make use of it.

All in all however, my advice is, that unless you are proforming real time video editing, multi channel sound processing, or running two applications side by side, duel core and duel CPU is pretty damn useless. Most games and software aren't designed around duel core or duel processor designs with the exception of high end industry applications such as the purple RT video editing system, or 3D Studio Max 6 and above. For word processing, gaming, and other standard applications you are better off buying the fastest single core CPU you can. A single instruction can not be split into two, and the overheads with duel cpu/ core technology often means that even with duel core/ cpu optimised software you only get a 40% speed increase rather than the 100% most users expect.

So, sit down, and ask "how much do I need to spend, and what sort of software am I using?"

If it's just games, forget about duel core, and focus on speed. If you do alot of multitasking, then grab a duel core.

I will say one last thing, there is talk about games in developement that plan to make usage of duel core technology. Things like giving the first half, the normal processing instructions, and the second half, instructions for advanced AI or even physics processing. If this takes off as a standard, then it's better to grab a duel core rather than a duel CPU as the software will be designed to make use of it's design.

Also, if you are really idiotic, and into pointless upgrades for little and no reason, then grab a duel CPU motherboard that supports Duel Core technology, in effect this will give you Quad-Core. But unless you are running something seriousally complex for industry, it's a waste of time.

You will laugh at my newest pc its still a pentium III 933 mhz.
and I currently run the last of the PPC chipset mac towers. dual 2.5
However my new mac will be 8 dual cores all at 2.6 to 3.0 ghz
not quad but 8, however trying to find 20 grand for "32 gigs"(maxxed out) of ram is just silly!
This will place me in line with a serious pc again.

DBP will probably only handle one cpu anyway until we hear about threading from the boys.

Yeah, I really don't need two processors lol. Is there some way to dedicate the other one to SETI or something? Besides game development, the most strenuous task my computer does is probably Battlefield Vietnam (which I don't even really play much anymore) or Rainbow Six 3. But eh, it came with the computer so I guess it's a bonus that someday will come in handy. Like coin trays in cars. You don't *think* you'll ever need them, so you end up using them to store candy, but then one day you end up in New Jersey and PRESTO, that dusty coin tray suddenly has something to live for.

@Matt Rock

I think you will find your comp has one processor, the Hyper-threading causes windows to report it as two processors (as that’s what hyper-threading is suppose to do - simulate two processors). Use to do this with my old P4.

What's the other thing with an identical heat sink and fan on my motherboard? It's next to the processor so I figured it was another processor. And it isn't onboard video, that's an intel chip clear across the mobo (not that I know why it even needs it, it came with a card). lol I should learn this stuff at some point. I know a moderate amount of stuff about hardware but not as much as I probably should

Yup, that's the one. My Vaio is the one that came out immediately before yours, and I was angry because yours is way nicer And it looks soooo hot. I want it! Gimme! They're sticking with that style now, too, so every time I walk into a Circuit City it's like a slap in the face lol. Does it have all of the media ports and TV ins/ outs? svideo, composite, component, all that? When mine came out they had a media Vaio, an "extreme" Vaio, and a cheaper/ basic Vaio. I went with the Media Vaio and I've regretted it hehe

Yeah, it has svideo/composite inputs, mic/headphones, 3usb ports, 400 ilink FireWire in the front bottom panel.
Coaxial input to a pci media card with svideo/composite out the rear.

No component though? That's weird, mine has it... not that I've ever used it. It makes more sense to not install it actually because why on earth does a computer need component? And from what I've read it's just an RCA-quality connection at best, so it seems rather silly to have installed. But hey, I don't work at sony lol.

Probably the Northbridge/Southbridge (forget which one is next to the CPU, think its Northbridge).

If you do have two processors then your special because google search for your model only comes up with comps with a single processor.

Might as well join in, my desktop is too old to mention, my laptop however:

3.2 ghz P4 (hyperthreading and 2mb cache)
1 gig RAM (dunno what type)
256mb Radeon X600
80gb HDD (mabye 7200rpm?)
17" screen, or 32" high def TV if I'm in my room.

I've loved it since the day I got it and still love it, in fact, its only 12 until its 1st birthday!

That's odd... I took a look through the manual earlier today, the one that came with my computer, and it says "2x Intel Pentium 4 Processor @ 3.0 GHz" (that was the first time I'd ever opened it lol... how sad is that). On the box where it lists system specs it doesn't say anything though... just Intel P4. So one of them is wrong lol. If it has two it's not like it makes me cooler or anything, I could care less, it's still a super-fast and awesome computer

I know for a fact that Amazon is wrong on three counts... it has 3 RAM slots, not 2, and it doesn't list the component inputs, which are on the back of my computer. Also, my computer didn't come with a standard 56k modem, just the giga-ethernet card. I'm guessing that either Amazon is (well, was) selling some weird version of my computer, or this computer was customized to some degree. I dunno, to my knowledge it wasn't customized, but maybe it was and Sony didn't tell me lol. In either case, you're more than likely right about there only being one processor and Sony probably says 2x in the manual because of the hyper-threading (they're notorious for doing stuff like that).

Very true. It's actually the same PSU that came with the unit originally 8 years ago. At that time it had the same motherboard & processor and a single DVD drive. Anything more and the PSU wouldn't be able to handle it.
Makes a perfect server PSU though, cheap to run!
