The only RTS I really enjoyed was Starcraft. Total War games are better, but for me the beauty of these is in the Campaign map (i.e. the turn based stuff).

Quote: "Ill have to find a demo of DoW thanks, though the number of races means nothing it all comes down to balance and gameplay."

I played the DoW demo, and loved it but I couldn't afford the full game at the time. It's based on Warhammer, and although I've not played the tabletop game in the last 6 years (at least), I seem to remember it was pretty balanced.

StarCraft is the most balanced though, except I can never get the hang of playing as protoss...

Quote: "Just for kicks my friend and I would set up an online game and build like 500,000 conscripts. It lagged so bad and we actually found a limit for unit selection in a C&C game, it was amazing."

Try building every unit in the game caped online...Even with a powerfull comp it lags like there is no tomorow.

Quote: "
You don't get that balance in C&C games, there's always one tank that owns everything, or a particular tactic that never fails. I'd say it was a bit more like the original Warcraft, that had great balance too because the units were all pretty much the same - but you always had really long battles."

You really dont in the first red aleart, the enemy always wins, it takes them 1/3 the time it takes you to make a massive army and just woop the crap out of you. Its like they start with a base and you dont...and easy is harder than hard...

Personally yes. I personally think that relic will be the first to do so, since they are making better rts's so far eg Homeworld, Dawn of war

It's a mod of C&C Generals that turned into StarCraft 2: Starkiller

Um, no. This is the actual C&C 3 AFAIK they're using the same engine that powered BFMEII.

I bought the battle chest for star craft, but when I tried to play it I could never get into it. I don't know why, but it never appealed to me.I'm not sure what about it exactly I didn't like, but I definitely didn't.

My favorite rts of all time is Homeworld. No other rts has ever quite been as enjoyable for me. I actualy enjoy the completely 3d mechanic. It bothers me that so many space rts games turn space into a 2d plane. or don't utilize the third dimention if they have it. I also love the art style, and the awesome story. I can say, if I ever program an rts, it will be very simmilar to Homeworld on many levels. Starcraft is undiniably great, but I've never gotten into it. Go Relic.

Total Annihilation...the best RTS ever created in my opinion. Unfortunately the company that made it, Cave Dog, went out of business, however there is a website about a supposed TA 2, but i haven't seen much progress on it. I have played starcraft and have to say it really doesn't compare. So yes there are games out there that match up.

You guys are talking about two different videos.

Rise of Nations is cooler than Age of Empires (don't eat me).

YES YES YES!

Homeworld is my favourite RTS by far, played through it several times . It had lots of strategy, a cool storyline and a sufficiently long/challenging/varying campaign (hehe, the gardens, junkyard, and that one sphere of ships come to mind ). What was also cool about it was that even though i got it for like $10-15 it came with the soundtrack on a separate CD... now that's classy (they got best soundtrack of the year, it's pretty good ). It's just really fun to plot out in 3D space, deciding which direction the enemy is most likely to come from and placing mines, turrets, etc appropriately...

what's also fun is playing a carrier game and... well.. yeah it's a great game

as far as other RTS games though I'd say i like AOE II best, starcraft was pretty good but i didn't like it as much... (i never owned it, but I've played the broodwars version of it for about 6-7 hours maybe)

if you're a star wars nut then galactic battlegrounds wasn't too bad
