Ah yes, I forgot to congratulate Jeku! Awesome work, if I had a PSP I'd certainly get it.

Quick question, whats the environment like where you work? Is it like a cubicle type deal or something else? Thanks!

Thanks ionstream! The environment is a dream. We have big open spaced desks, with all the amenities (sp?) you can imagine. Basically the only place *maybe* nicer than our building would be Google or Microsoft Pool, foosball, two basketball courts, full-sized gym, workout fitness gym, 2 Starbucks (yes two!), free coffee, 2 full-size theatres (including gigantic theatre screen & THX), huge motion capture building, free-play arcade games, huge windows, access to 35,000 movies and video games to take home for free, EA store with heavily discounted games, celebrities walking around, etc. etc.

EDIT:

Oh yah, and they just built a full-sized soccer field and beach volleyball court on the roof. Plus free beer and junk food every Friday.

It is the largest videogame studio in the world.

Ahhhh--- so yes, the environment is rather pleasant And 15 minutes from home.

Thanks man!

Motion Capture is technology that the mainstream industry uses to "capture" the "motion" of a subject, usually a human, so it can be relayed into animation sequences. They use MOCAP in games and movies (I don't know if they use it elsewhere). Basically, they map out your body's motion by connecting a bunch of little markers to your body. The markers look sort of ping pong balls, but slightly larger (the ones I've seen anyway... it's been a while since I've been in a mocap studio so I'm sure things are a lot different nowadays). They're usually attached to your joints and to the contours of your body, and when you move, those movements are relayed into software that maps you out in 3D, so that information can be used in making a character inside a game move. It makes 3D animation way easier, and cuts down on development times dramatically. Unfortunately, mocap is rediculously expensive to use, so don't plan on using it in your next 3D game but a friend of mine said that she heard about a company whose trying to make a cheap mocap unit that can be used in conjunction with popular low-cost (and free) 3D animation programs, like Blender and Milk Shape. While it seems possible, I'm kind of skeptical... if they make it, I can't imagine it would be very good.

Quote: "Like movie theatres? If so, what do they show?"

Just a guess, but maybe they show FMV's and stuff? And maybe movies for extended breaks from work? Totally guessing though.

Vancouver and EALA are the flagship studios for EA, their biggest, most expensive, and prettiest studios from what I've heard anyway. Must be pretty cool to work there.

The absolute best thing to do is get a computer science or related bachelors degree from a *real* University (not those game design schools that cost an arm and a leg and won't give you an edge). After all, you will learn how to make a software application, and a game is really just a software application.

Believe me, it will be harder to get a job in the game industry with an art-school game design certificate/degree than a real University degree. Oh yah, and study your linear algebra, too

heh, speaking of linear algebra, guess what i got for my last birthday?
3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development

and of course last semester i took linear algebra at the local college

yes, i am a nerd.

[edit] oops! almost forgot, congratulations on the FE for the game Jeku!

I'm not into sports games much at all... if i can do it in real life i'd rather actually do it, so the only ones i play are snowboarding or stuff like that which i can't do in real life (well, even if i could i couldn't pull of some of those flips and stuff lol)

but it's still awesome that you got to work on it

and i find watching football sleep inducing (unless it's the broncos, but even then...)

Well it's a salary, i.e. I'm not a contract employee, but a regular full-time, so I'll be going from game to game as needed. I'm not going to go into the salary amount but I certainly can't complain about it

I already answered the college question in this thread. Any university that offers a computer science or equivalent degree. I can't recommend any single school to you

EDIT:

I went to an unknown Uni and still got the job, so it's not all about prestige. Just know your stuff and you'll do fine.

That's it. But seriously, if you want to know exactly what you need you should find out from the game companies themselves. For me, I just have my degree and that's all I needed.
